Red Rock Tournament
Dilemma
[3/2/04] - The 2004 Red Rock Tournament in St. George, UT, May 1 & 2
will have either 16 or 20 teams entered.
We currently have 17 paid or oral commitments. So, we either have to
quickly add three teams or we have to drop one. With all the added
tournaments on the May 1 & 2 dates this year, it's unlikely we'll pick
up an additional three teams.
If we have to drop a team, it will be done on the basis of paid entry
fees. The first 16 paid teams will be in the tournament. Entry fee is
$350, payable to Roy Stout and sent to: Roy Stout - PO Box 812 - Lake
Hughes, CA 93532.
Teams currently committed are:
Broken Bow - Paid
Larry Miller Chev - Paid
Castlewood
Hilo Athletics
Tournament headquarters will be the Crystal Inn where they are offering
teams a $69 room rate which includes a full breakfast buffet for all
motel guests. Contact Jodi Bradshaw 800-662-2525 for reservations.
Red Rock is a 4-game guarantee. Pools of 4-teams each playing round
robin into single elimination play on Sunday for all entered teams.

Pueblo Bandits Looking for 3
Teams for Memorial Weekend Tournament to Honor the late Joe Santos
|
I am looking for 3 teams to
play in a tournament in Pueblo, Colorado on May 28, 29 & 30, 2004. This
tournament is in Memory of my Dad Joe Santos who passed away in May
2003. My Dad always wanted to bring in a few major teams to show the old
fastpitch people from Pueblo that the game is still alive and being
played a very high level. So my brothers and I are attempting to do this
in his memory for as long as possible.
Pueblo is located about 110 miles from Denver, Colorado. Denver
International Airport is about 130 miles from Pueblo. Colorado Springs
also has an airport that is located about 40 miles from Pueblo. Pueblo
also has a small airport.
This is only a 5 team tournament with all teams guaranteed 4 games. We
would like to play two games on Friday night and start the Championship
game on Sunday by 1 pm. Right now my team the Pueblo Bandits and Houston
HIS are committed. There will be no entry fee charged. The Pueblo
Bandits are willing to return your teams visit. If any of you are
interested please e-mail or phone me at the numbers listed below.

 | Passing of "Trino" Palacios (A
note from David Blackburn)
I am saddened to report to the fastpitch world, of the sudden
passing on Tuesday Feb 3 of Trinidad “Trino” Palacios, at his residence in Long Beach, CA. He was 84 years old.
Palacios was the founder, general manager. schedule booker, and as the
character “Madame Hilda”, played the starring Comedy role of the
barnstorming, novelty fastpitch softball team known as the California
Cuties.
For 55 consecutive summers, his team of Men Fastpitch Players dressed in
comedic women’s outfits, entertained millions of fastpitch fans, while
raising loads of money for local charities and softball related
community promotions throughout North America.
Originating in 1947 as a way to entertain soldiers on military bases
during post WW II years, and ending in the summer of 2001, the
California Cuties became one of the longest running continuous acts in
the history of show business.
Their 100 day annual tour from Memorial Weekend to Labor Day weekend
would typically have a 100+ game fastpitch schedule, with a majority of
their games played in Canada, where the California Cuties were quite
popular.
For the first 35 years of existence, the Cuties played games of 9
players vs 9 players, with 2 innings of serious softball and 5 innings
of comedy. In 1981, the game format changed for the last 20 years of the Cuties existence. That was when Palacios
decided to emulate the 4 players Vs 9 players Game popularized by Eddie
Feigner of “The King and His Court”.
They also changed format to 5 innings of serious softball, and two
innings of Comedy. Change-up artist Ronny Rupp, well known in
Southern California fastpitch circles, pitched nearly 2,000 games for the Cuties, during their 4-player era. As the
characters of “Fifi The Flirt”, and later as “Zsa Zsa Galore”, Rupp’s
outlandish Crow Hop and vicious change-up allowed the Cuties to actually
win 90% of their games, with only a catcher, first baseman, and
shortstop, against other 9 man teams. No word on Funeral
Arrangements as of yet.
Anyone wishing to share their California Cuties Softball Memories or
stories with Trino Palacios family, you can send emails to :

 | Note from David Bell on the Passing of Keith Bayne (Las Vegas Hitmen)
[12/03/03]
To all of you who may have played fastpitch with,
against, or knew of Keith through his brother Bruce Bayne:
Unfortunately I must give you the following news of
his services that will take place honoring his life spent alive. On
Saturday, Nov. 29, Keith died after an accident riding his 4-wheel ATV
sometime after 11 am that day. His truck and trailer were found by
police that night at 10 pm, but there was no sign of him. As other
riders were out on Sunday, Nov. 30, they came upon his body at 4pm. It
is not known the exact cause of his death, however he was riding down a
ravine in the desert in excess of 70mph when suddenly he came upon a
wall of rock. Keith was the left handed hitting third baseman with great
hands and batted second in our lineup with the old Aces, Bandits, and
Hitmen here in Las Vegas. He was very approachable and made friends
easily with those players that he respected across the diamond.
His services will be Thursday, December 4th at the
Canyon Ridge Christian Church located at the corner of Lone Mountain and
Jones at 1pm, with the actual funeral taking place after at Memory
Gardens just up the road at Lone Mountain and Tenaya. Keith leaves
behind four children, 3 boys and a girl. In lieu of flowers, any
donations are asked to benefit his kids via the K. E. Bayne Trust
Fund.
Any inquiries can be made to
me at 702-334-2610
Thank you,
David Bell
