By the Numbers

By The Numbers

[4/22/04] - The schedule for the Palm Springs II tournament (So Cal ASA Alliance) is now posted. The weatherman says that it will be a lot hotter this time around, as compared to March. (94 degrees Saturday and 97 Sunday). Time to break out the water and sunscreen. If you've had a chance to look at the schedule, you probably noticed that Vicki has given us an extra game on Saturday. It should be interesting to see how that affects pitching staffs come Sunday's elimination round. It figures to be a balancing act for managers. How deep is the staff? Who do I save for Sunday's elimination round? What about those "Saturday win" points?
Using the current standings to "rank" the pools, lowest total equating with toughest pool, here's how it shapes up. (Current place in standings in parentheses)
Pool C: 21
Raymar (3), Rounders (4), Amigos (6), Fear (8)
Pool B: 25
San Diego (2), Black Sox (5), Santana (8), Primos (10)
Pool A: 34
Edge (1), Palm Springs (7), Panteras (12), Rebels (14), Rezmen (unranked)

The Rezmen figure to be a wild card in Pool A, as it's their first time playing in the Alliance in 2004. Will it be the squad that finished as runner-up in the Upper ("B") division at Las Vegas Spring Swing? How will they (or anyone else) fare against the offensive juggernaut that is "Edge"? Can anyone stop the freight train? Wandering around trying to decide which games to watch? Try these "toughest matchups" Saturday, by the numbers:
09:00am: 3 vs. 6 - Raymar vs. Amigos
10:45: 4 vs. 6 - Rounders vs. Amigos
2:15: 2 vs. 5 - San Diego vs. Black Sox
4:00: 3 vs. 4 - Raymar vs. Rounders
5:45: 2 vs. 4 - San Diego vs Rounders
7:30: 5 vs. 6 - Black Sox vs. Amigos
Some of the teams that are just below the leaders, Raymar, the Rounders, Black Sox and Amigos find themselves with tough matchups, but an opportunity to go head to head with the teams they are battling in the standings. What could be better than that? Of course, with history as our teacher, all of this will mean very little by the time the weekend is over. Someone will surprise everyone, someone will stumble, and everyone will be checking those standings at the end of the weekend as we reach the halfway mark of the Alliance season.
