Norwest Games at Portland

June 6, 2004

Norwest League Games - Portland, Oregon
June 6, 2004 (Portland, OR)

Four of the six scheduled games were played on Saturday and Sunday in Portland.  Morgan Transfer (Olympia, WA) and the Vancouver BC Grey Sox traveled to the Rose City for a four game per team series.  The weather, however, did not cooperate.  Two games had to be cancelled on Sunday and on Saturday,  Erv Lind Stadium could not take any more of the wet stuff!  Portland and Vancover played 9 innings finishing tied at 4 apiece.  That game will be finished next month in Vancouver when Portland travels to the Grey Sox facility in Norwest Leage action.

Game 1)  Saturday May 5th.

Portland DeMarini            2 (Runs)    4 (Hits)  1 (error)

Morgan Transfer               1 (Run)     0  (Hits) 1 (error)

WP   Kevin Careless  (17K's)

LP    Sisko Sabate

Kalai Mahoe drove in two runs for Portland DeMarini in the bottom of the seventh to win the game and spoil a shut-out for Sisko Sabate who pitched very well for Morgan Transfer.  Kevin Careless threw a no-hitter for Portland.  A great pitching battle in this one.

Game 2)  Saturday May 5th

Vancouver Grey Sox   9 (Runs)  11 (Hits)  2  (Errors)

Morgan Transfer          3 (Runs   3  (Hits)  2  (Errors)

         Game went 8 innings

WP  Underhill

LP   Sabate

Vancouver exploded for six runs in the eight inning to win this one over Olympia.  The game also featured the season debut of Nick Underhill  for the Grey Sox.  Underhill, who has been recovering from a broken collar bone, picked up the win in relief of Robbins who went the first six innings for the Sox.

Game 3)  Saturday  May 5th

Portand DeMarini      4 (Runs)  5 (Hits)  3  (Errors)

Vancover Grey Sox   4 (Runs)  4 (Hits)  0  (Errors)

(Game called after 9 innings - Rain)

Portland - Roberto Bahler went all 9 innings

Vancouver -  (1) Underhill  (4) ) Robbins  (6)  Kawaguchi

HR - Clayton Beck - Vancouver

This seesaw battle went nine full innings before field conditions got too wet and the game was called at 11:30 pm.  The game is tentatively scheduled to be completed July 10, when Portland travels to The Hill in Vancouver.

Game 4)  Sunday,  May 6th - 9:30am

Vancouver BC               7 (Runs)  9  (Hits)  0 (Errors)

Morgan Transfer           4 (Runs)   4  (Hits)  4 (Errors)

WP   Underhill

LP    Sabate

HR  Kevin Norton - Morgan Transfer (Olympia)

The rain started before this one was finished, but all seven innings were played albeit in pretty wet conditions.  The last two games were cancelled as the field was unplayable.

Morgan Transfer and Portland DeMarini will tentatively make-up their game July 18th in Olympia.  Scottie Myers and his Olympia team played hard all weekend and came up empty handed despite leading at one time or another in every game.  Sisko Sabate was a workhorse losing a couple of close ones.  They are a tough bunch of hardnose players. Thanks for coming down and not complaining about the miserable weather.  Does it rain in Olympia, too?

It looks like Nick Underhill is well on his way back having thrown several strong innings over the weekend with no noticeable problems.  Thanks to Conrad Margolis, Jimmy Johnson and all of the players and coaches from Vancouver for a long trip down south only to endure a very wet, cold and shortened schedule.

Portland DeMarini hosts the Victoria Travellers Inn next weekend (June 12-13) at Erv Lind Stadium in Norwest League action.  Weather forcast - sunshine.........

June 26-27th - Portland DeMarin Rose Cup -  Game schedule will be out soon for this tournament.

Regards,

Tom Ree
