Victoria Traveller's Inn hosted Saskatoon
Black Sox in Super Series
Fastpitch action in front of 250 fans at Royal Athletic Park in
Victoria
Saturday night. Traveller's Inn improved their record to six wins and
no
losses by taking both ends of the doubleheader from Saskatoon, 7-2 in
the opener, then 9-2 in 5 innings in the nightcap. These two teams
play another Super Series twin-bill Sunday morning starting at 11:00
A.M.
Traveller's Inn conclude a 3-week home stand next weekend,
Friday-Saturday, May 28-29, with a 4-game set against Calgary Diamond
Dawgs. Doubleheaders start at 6:30 P.M. each night.

Game 1

Saskatoon 010 000 1 - 2 5 3
Traveller's Inn 200 005 x - 7 6 0

Time: 1:56 (6:35-8:31 P.M.).

Traveller's Inn rode Rick Smith's third strong starting performance to
a
7-2 win in the opener of this weekend's 4-game series. Smith threw his
third complete-game win of the young season, scattering five hits
while striking out 15 batters. Smith has now struck out 45 batters in
24 innings pitched over the last two weekends. Even more remarkable,
Smith has done all this while walking just one batter - and that was
an intentional walk issued in the 9th inning of the first game last
weekend!
Traveller's Inn took the early lead in the
bottom of the 1st inning in this game. SS Zenon Winters drew a leadoff
walk, then promptly stole second base, and moved to third base on a
groundout. 3B Glenn Ormsby then hit a sharp one-hopper down the
third-base line, which was niftily fielded by Saskatoon 3B Jarrod
Teichreb. Winters broke for home on contact and was quickly caught in
a rundown. However, the throw back to third base was errant, allowing
Winters to score and Ormsby to advance to second base. 1B Kevin
Bobroske then lined a single to left-centre field to plate Ormsby for
a 2-0 lead. Traveller's Inn loaded the bases with two out, but failed
to score any more runs this inning. CF Pat MacKintosh cut that lead in
half in the top of the 2nd inning, belting a solo home run over the
right field fence. Smith and Saskatoon starter Bryan Newton then
settled into a nice pitching match-up over the next few innings,
although Newton got some special defensive help from Teichreb, who
robbed Ormsby his next two times up also. In the bottom of the 3rd
inning, Ormsby led off with a pop foul which Teichreb leapt high to
grab just before it hit the fence. Then in the bottom of the 5th
inning, after Winters had singled and eventually moved around to third
base, Ormsby drilled another hot smash just fair down the third-base
line. Teichreb dove to his right to snare the ball on a short-hop,
slapped the tag on Winters, who had no chance to get back after
jumping to his lead, then jumped up and fired across the diamond to
complete the inning-ending double play.
Traveller's Inn took advantage of a tiring
Newton and a big error to put the game away in the bottom of the 6th
inning. Bobroske led off with his second hit of the game, a single,
and CF Jeff Hurford followed with a walk. After a strikeout, Newton
hit DP Doug Cain to load the bases, then walked LF Pat Walsh to force
in a run. Kevin Careless came on in relief of Newton and immediately
got C Tyler Werbowski to bounce sharply back to the mound. Careless
fielded the ball cleanly, but threw well wide of first base, and by
the time the ball was retrieved three more urns had scored and
Werbowski was standing on third base. RF Harvey Stevenson singled to
score Werbowski and cap the scoring. Pat MacKintosh led off the top of
the 7th inning by drilling his second solo home run of the game, but
Smith then struck out the side, around a single by Teichreb, to end
the game.

Game 2
R H E
Saskatoon 110 00 - 2 2 3
Traveller's Inn 213 12 - 9 7 1
Jeff Farion(L), Kevin Careless(3) & Colin Newton.
Collin McKenzie & Brian Banner.
Home Runs: Sask.: Keith MacKintosh.
T.I.: Harvey Stevenson, Glenn Ormsby, Jeff
Hurford,
Kevin Bobroske.
Umpires: P - Scott McLaren, B - Gary Schmidt.
Time: 1:25 (8:53-10:18 P.M.).

Traveller's Inn blasted four home runs and got another solid effort
from
starting pitcher Collin McKenzie to post a 9-2, 5-inning victory in
the
nightcap. McKenzie posted his third straight complete-game victory at
home by tossing a sharp two-hitter, striking out 10, and also not
walking a batter. He struck out the last eight batters he faced.
Saskatoon grabbed the first lead in this game in the top of the 1st
inning
when Keith MacKintosh hammered a two-out solo home run to left-centre
field to put his side ahead 1-0. Traveller's Inn tied the game 1-1 in
the bottom half of the inning when RF Harvey Stevenson lofted one over
the left field fence; they then took the lead when 3B Glenn Ormsby
walked, moved up a base on one wild pitch, then raced all the way home
from second base on another wild pitch. Saskatoon tied the game at 2-2
in the top of the 2nd inning when McKenzie fielded what should have
been an inning-ending groundout but instead threw the ball down the
right-field line, allowing Saskatoon LF Troy Gordon to score all the
way from first base.
Traveller's Inn took the lead for good in
the bottom of the 2nd inning thanks to a poor throw by Saskatoon
pitcher Jeff Farion which allowed 2B Dan Whiteford to reach second
base. Whiteford later scored on SS Quinn Neilson's sacrifice fly to
left field. Traveller's Inn poured on the offence before ending the
game early in the 5th inning. In the bottom of the 3rd inning
Stevenson ripped a 1-out double and Ormsby followed by lining a shot
over the left-field fence to make the score 5-2. After a groundout, CF
Jeff Hurford clubbed one over the right-centre field fence to up the
lead to 6-2. In the bottom of the 4th inning, two walks and another
Saskatoon error allowed C Brian Banner to move around the bases and
score Traveller's Inn 7th run. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Kevin
Bobroske led off with a long home run to left-centre field. A pair of
walks and an infield single loaded the bases, then Hurford scored the
game-ending run when the throw from Neilson's grounder was wide of the
plate.
