News Release
Saturday, June 28, 2008
The top three seeds from the round robin remain in the hunt for the 2008 World Junior Fast Pitch Championship. Australia secured their chance to repeat as tournament champions when they booked their spot in the finals with a solid 4-1 victory over Japan.
Japan can still get another crack at Australia and the tournament championship with a victory over host nation Canada when the two teams meet at the Pepsi Softball Centre at 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, 2008.
The third seeded Canadian club won a hard fought battle with New Zealand in Saturday’s other semi final. Canada needed some final inning heroics to emerge with a 2-1 win and the chance to compete for the world championship.
“The athletes have all put on such a great show and the fans have been just amazing,†said George Arcand, Chair of the 2008 World Junior Fast Pitch Championship. “Hopefully we’ll all be rewarded with some good weather for the final two games.â€
The winner of the Canada/Japan game will take on the defending champions from Australia at 4 p.m. in a game that will be followed immediately by the closing ceremonies.
Tickets for both Sunday games are available at the gate for $15 a piece.

“The Dower Report” from Herb Dower:
Fat City won the Grass Valley Tournament over the June 21-22 weekend.
They defeated Brotherton Pipe of Oregon. which finished third in the Boatnik Tournament in Grants Pass last month, in the finals, 7-4.
In Sunday’s single-elimination, Fat City trailed one of the local teams, 5-0, going into the fifth inning before coming back to win to stay alive.
Brotherton Pipe is the same team that finished second in the Class C Nationals in Stockton while playing under the Global Pacific banner, losing in the finals to Pennslyvania Power. They are a good team.
Earlier at Grass Valley they defeated Santa Rosa Fastpitch 8-0 in five innings.
Santa Rosa was 1-2, winning its opening game Saturday 10-9 with a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning and then losing Sunday, 7-5, in a five-inning time-limit game.

We are sorry to report that Fred Hanker, owner, manager and top hitter for the Long Beach Black Sox was injured during SCIFL league play over the weekend and will be out for 6 weeks, according to reports on Sunday. Fred suffered a deep gash on his index finger (glove hand) from a sliding baserunner. He was treated and stitched up at a nearby hospital, with doctors telling Fred that the gash very nearly hit the tendon, which would have required surgery. As it is, Fred will miss the 4th of July tournament in Beaumont, as well as the final two league weekends of SCIFL league play, July 12-13 in Santa Barbara and July 26-27 back in Santa Fe Springs.
The loss is a big blow to the Black Sox, who were in the midst of a solid season, and gearing up for the NAFA World Series in Mankato, Minnesota in August. Fred arrived in camp at the beginning of the season in great shape, and has been the Sox top hitter this season. Fred also runs one of the more popular team websites around, though I doubt that he will feel like doing much typing for the next month or so. We wish him a speedy recovery.
We reached Fred on Monday morning, and he had this to say:
“I’m lucky its on my left index finger and not my right. The emergency room doctor said she doesn’t think it cut the tendon but it came came very close. I have to go see my primary doctor in 10 days to get stitches off for further examination.”
Fred also said that he hopes that the six week estimate to heal is on the high side, and hopes to be back in action, but time will tell.
