Winning pitcher was Andrew Kirkpatrick, losing pitcher was Lucas Mata.

After a 2 – 2 record at the Rose Cup the Grey Sox seasonal record now stands at 22 – 5. What Time is it in Whitehorse?

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

With twelve different countries participating in the 2008 ISF Junior Men’s World Championships, in a wide range of time zones, we expect many to be asking the question, “What time is it in Whitehorse?”.

Easy for those of us here on the west coast who are in the same time zone as Whitehorse. But for everyone else, we’ve made the time zone conversion a bit easier with our “World Time Zone Clocks” page at our companion site, www.Ballparkradio.com.

Whitehorse

(There’s a lot of code on that page, so give it time to load — you’ll find it loads faster after the first time.)

Speaking of Ballparkradio, we’ve been receiving some emails asking when our broadcasts begin. The answer is 12:00 noon next Thursday, June 26, 2008, for Game 52, when the USA Jr. Men take on the reigning world champions, Australia. Kyle and I will be broadcasting 12 games in 3 days.

BATTER UP – A player on Team Australia sizes up a pitch during the country’s practice session on Thursday evening at Takhini diamond four.

Expectations are high as Canada’s top junior ball players take to the field tonight for the team’s opening game against the Czech Republic at the Eighth ISF Junior Men’s Fast Pitch Championships.

The game will be played at 7 p.m. at Field One in the Pepsi Softball Centre and will follow the championships opening ceremonies, which are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

“We are excited about playing in front of our own country and feel privileged to do so,” said Canada’s Team Leader Duke Cormier. “It’s a benefit to us.”

An all-time record of 12 teams for the championships are set to compete in round robin format for the next seven days. The tournament began today with a match between Australia and Botswana, which started at noon on Field One. This will be Botswana’s first appearance in the junior fastpitch championships.

The other countries include the Czech Republic, Argentina, Denmark, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, the United States and Venezuela. Of the 12 countries, only Canada, the United States and Japan have competed in all eight junior fastpitch championships, which was first held in 1981.

After the conclusion of round robin play, the top four countries will advance to the page playoff, which is scheduled to begin on June 28. The page playoff format features the third and fourth place teams facing off against one another, which will immediately be followed by a second game between two top teams at the championships.

The winning team of the second page playoff game will earn a direct birth into the Grand Final. The team that comes out victorious between the third and fourth place squads will then play whichever team loses the second playoff match.

In recent years, Australia has been on a tear at the championships and are currently the three-time defending champions.

The Australians haven’t dropped a single game in the past two world junior events and are, to date, the only team that have been able to win the title on home soil.

George Arcand is “Mr. Softball” in the Yukon

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Host for the 8th ISF Junior Men’s World Championships

From the Whitehorse Daily Star Newspaper:

MR. SOFTBALL – George Arcand, the tournament chairman for June’s ISF Junior Men’s World Softball Championships.

Hosting a softball tournament involves a team effort, much like playing the game itself. George Arcand knows this all too well.

The long-time player and member of Softball Yukon has helped organize softball tournaments of all sizes in the Yukon for more than 20 years.

Since the creation of the Pepsi Softball Centre around 25 years ago, the City of Whitehorse has been able to offer a first-rate facility for participants in the sport.

Tournaments featuring local, regional and out-of-territory competition have all been held over this period of time, but the one event that has yet to be hosted in the community is an international competition.

On June 20-29 this will change, as Whitehorse is set to hold the ISF Junior Men’s World Softball Championships.

TAKING A CUT – An Argentinean batter takes a cut during Wednesday’s exhibition game against the Czech Republic while some of the U.S. team watch on from the bleachers. (top) PREPARATIONS – Head coach Eduardo Sabat of Argentina’s Jr. men’s fastpitch team, left, discusses preparations during a practice Wednesday at Takhini diamond number one. His son, pitching coach Francisco Sabate, listens on while coach Arturo Anea, right, looks over the roster.

On one field, Takhini diamond number four, the South Africans.

Across the way on three, the Czech Republic and Argentina.

And tucked in the corner on five, Venezuela.

Under the sunshine of Wednesday afternoon, youth from around the world continued to shake off their jet lag while preparing for an international fastpitch championship that will come only once in their life.

The eighth ISF Junior Men’s World Fast Pitch Championship begins at noon Friday with Australia defending its three consecutive titles against Botswana, a newcomer to the event held every four years. The 12-team round robin tournament runs for 10 days, with the finals scheduled for June 29.

Canada, a consistently top contender with a gold in 1993, and bronze in ‘97, ‘01 and in ‘05, opens the championship against the Czechs Friday evening at 7 p.m. after the opening ceremonies.
