Twins aim to take championship

CHRISTINE RIVET
RECORD STAFF

[KITCHENER] – Canada has produced many of the planet’s finest fastball players, though the red and white has gone a dozen years without a world championship at the club level.

And although a pair of Ontario rivals are in the mix at the 61st annual International Softball Congress world tournament, which opens today at Kitchener’s Peter Hallman Ball Yard, they’ll have to slug it out in a field that includes an assortment of top-flight American-based challengers whose rosters are fuelled by a host of international talent.

The fifth-ranked Kitchener Hallman Twins and the No. 3 Orillia Riversharks will be in tough at the 32-team event, said one fastball insider, ISC website director Al Doran, who predicts any one of three American teams could cart off the hardware when the tourney winds down on Aug. 18.

“I’m thinking it could be Patsy’s, the Farm and possibly So Cal as a long-shot,” said Doran, of Richmond Hill, Ont.

No Canadian team has won the ISC title since the Toronto Gators claimed it in 1995.

The Twins hope to improve on the fifth-place showing they posted at last year’s worlds.

For the first time in decades, the ISC circuit is without a clear-cut favourite since the demise of the two-time defending champs, County Materials of Marathon, Wis., in the off-season.

So, there’s no time like the present, said Twins coach Larry Lynch.

“This year, on any given weekend, there could be four or five teams that could step up. We hope we will be one of ’em”

To improve their chances, the Twins will need to stay on the winners’ side of the bracket, thus maintaining their prime-time status in the schedule with the occasional day off and avoiding the two-games-a-day slog waiting for teams on the losers’ side, he said.

Last year, the jittery Twins dropped their second game and faced an uphill climb.

“Going into a big tournament — especially at home — I don’t think you can avoid the butterflies. You will always have that. But last year was a good experience for us. I think we’ll be better prepared mentally,” said Twins catcher Dave Bailey.

As for Patsy’s — who are emerging as the closest to a favourite this tourney can offer — they hope to fly beneath the radar.

“We are trying to be humble. I don’t want to load the gun for anybody,” said Phil Rogers, a Wall Street lawyer who owns and manages the team.

“We don’t want to rock the boat.”

With so many teams in the hunt, one thing’s for certain.

“You can count on some upsets,” said Lynch.

The tournament also features a flight for intermediate teams, the ISC tournament of championships (affectionately known as the ISC IIs) which opens Tuesday at Kitchener’s Budd Park and Kinsmen Park in Cambridge.

A midget-aged tourney will feature six under-19 teams. It runs Aug. 16-18 at Hallman Ball Yard.

Here’s a look at The Record’s favourites heading into the main event:

1. Patsy’s –– Named for a previous sponsor, a New York City restaurant, this outfit boasts speed, power and pitching. Gained momentum through the latter part of the season, capturing both the American Softball Association title and the trophy from Allentown, Pa. Australia’s Adam Folkhard, along with three-time ISC champ, Canadian-born Gerald Muizelaar, anchor the pitching staff.

2. The Farm –– Big bats and loads of big-game experience. The ace of the staff, Korrey Gareau of Victoria, B.C. is a seasoned veteran. Late-season surge saw the boys from Madison, Wis. battle through the losers’ bracket at the U.S. club team championship all the way to the final. Roster notables include Canadian outfielders Colin Abbott and Paul Rosebush.

3. So Cal Bombers — Dark horse entry from the Golden State has already won three major tourneys this season, including the Monkton Invitational. Still, the Bombers’ pitching staff doesn’t draw much respect from the fastball community. All that could change in Kitchener, especially if So Cal’s usual booming bats and sparkling defence can keep games close.

4. Broken Bow Gremlins — Armed with perhaps the finest pitcher in the game today, Aussie ace Andrew Kirkpatrick, the team based from Clifton Park, N.Y. enters the tourney ranked No. 1 in the world, though the Gremlins have battled demons of inconsistency.

5. Kitchener Hallman Twins — Posted a 2-7 (won-lost) record against the world’s top-ranked teams in previous tourney play this season, though none of those losses were by more than two runs. Have fielded perhaps their best hitting lineup in the team’s four-decade history, adding American sluggers Todd Budke and Blake Miller in the off-season.

6. Orillia Riversharks — Started the season ranked No. 1 in the world, but veteran squad has cooled off lately. Players to watch include Kitchener resident and national team catcher Sean O’Brien along with his younger brother Rob, a pitcher, who lives in Elora.

SUMMERSIDE — The Kelly’s Pub Canadians are the lone undefeated team after three days of play at the 2007 Canadian junior men’s fastpitch championship.

The defending champions from Newfoundland and Labrador overpowered the host P.E.I. Source for Sports Twins 11-1 in five innings Tuesday night to improve to 4-0.

“We’re definitely pleased with our play,” said Canadians’ centre fielder Brad Ezekiel, who walked, doubled home a run and scored twice against the host team. “Hopefully things keep going up from here.”

Also Tuesday evening, the Saskatoon Diamondbacks scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull out a thrilling 2-1 decision over the previously unbeaten Scarborough (Ont.) Wolverines (4-1).

Moses leads the call for Hall of Fame honorees

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

From the

When Joe Moses puts pen to paper and asks for your attendance at an event, the general response is positive.
By Rick McCorkle

That’s why nearly 80 former local men’s fastpitch softball players, sponsors, umpires, commissioners and sportswriters have responded to Moses’ request to be honored at the first induction of the Southwest Washington Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame on Saturday at the Lower Columbia College Student Center.

Moses, who graduated from Castle Rock High in 1932 and is considered one of the best athletes and coaches to come out of Southwest Washington, is intent on making sure his softball peers get their due while they’re still around to enjoy it.

“We want everyone to feel welcome,” Moses said. “There were a lot of great players from our area through the years, and we want to recognize as many as we can.”

Earlier this year, Moses planned to hold the event at the Merk Building in downtown Longview but as the Hall of Fame inductee list continued to grow, he determined a larger room was needed.

It’s estimated that another 400-500 family members and supporters of local fastpitch softball during the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s will attend the free event.

8 Games for Midland at the ASA Major

Explorers eliminated at ASA tourney
08/07/2007

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Playing their eighth game in less than 72 hours, the No. 13 Midland Explorers ran out of steam Saturday at the ASA Men’s Major Fastpitch tournament.

Against No. 8 Circle Tap, the Explorers were ahead 2-1 in the third inning but went on to lose 10-2 after a seven-run sixth inning — eliminating the Explorers from the tourney.

The tournament began Thursday with Midland’s dramatic 4-3 win against No. 19 Dolan & Murphy. Explorers’ catcher Craig Crawford hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to help Midland advance to the Round of 16.

But the momentum didn’t continue later that night against the No. 3 Orillia Quaker Riversharks. The Explorers managed only three hits — two from Crawford — in losing 3-0 and falling into the losers’ bracket.

With the Explorers needing to win nine straight games to clinch the title, Midland began elimination play Friday by beating the No. 22 Ashland Mets 4-0. After taking the loss against Orillia, Grant Patterson bounced back to earn the win by striking out nine and allowing just three hits. Crawford hit his second home run of the tournament to help the Explorers advance.

Immediately following the game, Midland roughed up No. 23 Plangger’s with a 6-2 victory. The Explorers’ Steve Roberts had two hits and three RBIs to lead the team.

After an afternoon break, Midland came back to win 3-2 over the Bloomington Stix. Patterson earned his second win of the tournament on his way to first-team All-America honors.

The marathon day ended with a dramatic victory — Midland’s fourth of the day — against the No. 16 Quad City Sox. Down 2-0 from the first inning on, Midland came back in its final at-bat. With runners on second and third and one-out, Reid Benson scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead in half, and Todd Schultz advanced to third. Crawford then walked and stole second to put the winning run in scoring position. That set the table for Steve Horning’s game-winning two-run single.

“Friday was just a marathon day,” manager Clint Beane said.

After getting very little sleep, the Explorers returned Saturday to continue their run through the losers’ bracket. Patterson pitched a complete-game shutout and struck out 10 in a 3-0 win over Florida Fastpitch. Kyle Beane hit a two-run homer to lead Midland.

Midland then lost to Circle Tap to finish the tourney at 6-2.

“We hit that losers’ bracket a little early,” Clint Beane said. “We still would have had to win three more games (had we beat Circle Tap).”

In addition to Patterson’s first-team honors, Crawford was named second-team All-America.

Midland will conclude its season at the ISC World Tournament in Kitchener, Ont., beginning Friday

Host P.E.I. squad suffers five-inning loss to Scarborough at junior fastpitch nationals

Tuesday, July 7, 2007

SUMMERSIDE — The Scarborough Wolverines and defending champion Kelly’s Pub Canadians from Newfoundland and Labrador are tied atop the standings of the Canadian junior men’s fast pitch championship.

Both teams sport 3-0 records.

Monday, the Wolverines overcame a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Saint-Leonard Express from Quebec 2-1 in eight innings and blanked the host P.E.I. Source for Sports Twins 10-0 in five innings under the lights.

Scarborough blew the game against P.E.I. (1-1) open with a five-run second inning to open up a 7-0 lead.

“It was a tough result,”said Twins assistant coach Todd Richard. “One big hit put us behind the 8-ball a little farther than we wanted to be early.”

Andrew Putham, who connected for a second-inning grand slam and also tripled, drove in six Scarborough runs and Nick Dambrosio, who also hit a triple, plated three runs.

Winning pitcher Matt Leahy and Greg Dalgarno combined to limit the Twins to three hits. P.E.I. starter Neil Arnold suffered the loss.

Jeremy McKinnon, Mike MacIsaac and D’Arcy LaPierre had the Twins’ hits.

The Canadians received a grand slam from Jon Kane and a three-run blast from Ken Gosse in a seven-run third inning in a 9-2 five-inning victory over Miramichi (N.B.) Vics in the afternoon. In an early-evening matchup of two undefeated teams, the Canadians edged Elmira, Ont., 5-4 in a wild game.

In other games Monday, it was: Elmira 5 Nova Scotia 4 (8 innings); Simcoe 8 Quebec 1; Simcoe 5 Saskatchewan 4; Nova Scotia 11 New Brunswick 2 (6 innings).
