California Lumberkings in Aurora, IL for AFSA Classic

Friday, July 13th, 2007

The California Lumberkings travel all the way to Aurora, Illinois, to compete in the AFSA Classic for the second year in a row. The Lumberkings are currently ranked #2 in the ISC II rankings, and will step up in class this weekend, playing against upper division, ISC World teams. The stiff competition will help the Lumberkings gear up for the ISC II Tournament of Champions held next month in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, August 14-18, 2007. The tournament will mark the third time this year that the Lumberkings have stepped up to upper division play, including the Red Rock Tournament at St. George, Utah in May, and the Rose Cup tournament in Portland, Oregon in June.

The ISC World Tournament will host the top 32 teams, while the ISC II division will host 35 intermediate level teams. In the AFSA Classic, the Lumberkings will play Saturday, July 14, 2007 at 9am, 11am and 5pm, Chicago time against Quad City Sox, Bloomington Stix and Townline, all upper division ISC World teams. Quad City is ranked #16, Bloomington #18, and Townline #11.

The local Illinois newspaper, the Aurora Beacon News will be posting updates over the weekend, and have been kind enough to grant us permission to reprint those here. Keep an eye out for news stories with this banner graphic:

2. – Texas Stars 5-2 Houston, TX
3. – Nohren Farms 3-2 Champaign, IL

*ASA refers to the 50 and over as the “Senior” division, though I refuse to do so. Someone clue the ASA that guys playing fastpitch at 50 are not “seniors”, nor are they eligible for retirement or retirement benefits. Or as they say……”50 is the new 40″ 😉

Czech Republic Captures European Softball Championship

Tuesday, July 10th, 2007

From the Jerusalem Post
By Micah Winston

Israel’s national team finished a disappointing seventh place in the 8th European Men’s Fastpitch Softball Championship in Beveren, Belgium last week.

Israel finished with a record of 2-5, beating Slovakia 7-3, earning a forfeit win over Great Britain, who did not show up, and losing to the Czech Republic 11-0, Netherlands 12-0, Denmark 8-1, Belgium 9-0 and Croatia 6-1.

Denmark finished in first place after the first round of play but lost to the Czech Republic 2-0 in the Grand Final. Netherlands finished third and hosts Belgium fourth.

Israel’s top hitter was Yigal Ben Israel who had four hits, batted .364 and stole two bases. Aviv Yaakov and Alberto Tacher each rapped three hits, including two doubles and Guy Bender also had three singles.

Mike Doktofsky led the team with three RBI’s, two on a big triple against Slovakia.

Israel’s defense was sloppy, making 20 errors in seven games and poor base running also hurt the team.

The blue and white pitching was not quite at the level of the top European teams, but Yarone Ben Israel and Aaron Levarko, an immigrant from New Zealand making his National team debut, pitched well and up-and-coming young fireballer Aaron Kurtz showed promise in his one start, allowing only five hits to first place Denmark in five innings.

The 23-year-old Kurtz, who walked eight in the game, has the potential to be a top pitcher in Europe, if he can iron out his control issues.

Israel’s top pitcher, Ami Baran, pitched in only one game due to injury.

First of all I would like to thank my son for going with me as usual his help was invaluable to me. A big thanks to Darren Derricks and Dean Kane for inviting Bret and myself to stat this tournament. I had no internet connection so sending games and recap stories did not happen. Next Year we will have to make better arrangements. Probably the best tournament in the USA this year should have been reported better. Karen LeBlanc announced almost all of the games at the Cirle Tap Diamond and did a great job. Last but not least the Ribeye Steak sandwich was incredible.

Postscript on Bombers’ win at Monkton

Friday, July 6th, 2007

From Cesar Rodriguez, So Cal Bombers:

It was one of the best tournaments we’ve played in, in terms of competition and environment. Brian Baillie and the people of Monkton did an outstanding job and the atmosphere was outstanding.

The team played pretty well. We came out of the gate well against Aspen and were able to take advantage of some mistakes and timely hitting to win the first game. Lucas Mata threw well and kept the Saskatoon team off balance all day. In the second game against Patsy’s, we got smoked. No EXCUSES, hear that critics! We played poorly and had poor focus at the plate. When you combine that with a top pitcher like Muizy and the bats and defense of the Patsy’s, you’re going to get your butt kicked; and we did. What you hope to do is regroup and play better the next one. We did.

We went on to beat the Twins (facing Koert and Scott), the Farm (Gervasutti and Gareau), the Gremlins (Kirkpatrick), and the Twins again (Martin). No slouches in any of those games. Our pitching was outstanding, we used Peeples, Whitten and Mata in our first game against the Twins, Mata against both the Farm and the Gremlins, and Whitten threw the final. Great performances. We got clutch hitting and did many of the little things we need to do to win.

Now I’ve been criticized before for stressing the process but I really believe this; Monkton’s win was satisfying but only because it legitimized us – to ourselves. We have a chance to win and beat good teams – we’ve been saying it and now we can start to believe we have that ability. We still have a lot of work to do and we know it. Winning at the end of June is great and we feel good about it but it isn’t August yet and we have to keep working hard on the process of getting better and that means improving some of the little things to be the best we can be.

Next weekend we travel to the Boys of Summer, and as many know we’re without Mata and Ghostkeeper (this past weekend we were without Potskin and Parra) but who is with us or not is really irrelevant. Our job is to continue to work on our overall game; get our at bats in against good pitching; our innings in against good hitters; and continue to work on plays and situations. If we win the tournament again, it will simply be another bonus.

I’m happy with our progress to this point, Monkton was a great confirmation for us and Rob, the Trejo’s and I are very proud of our club, but the World’s are still about six weeks away and there’s lots of work to do. See you at the park…….

Fast pitch softball tournament in Hampton this weekend

Fast pitch softball returns to Hampton Roads this weekend as the Virginia Classic tournament will take place starting Saturday at 9:30 am at Francis Asbury Elementary School in Hampton. Four teams will play a round-robin schedule on Saturday and the standings after those games will determine championship bracket scheduling on Sunday.

The host team is the Peninsula Merchants (10-5) who open the event taking on Suffolk-based GP Gwaltney at 9:30 a.m. Following that will be PA Power and Sketchers from Baltimore at 11:15.

World class pitcher Bill Hillhouse will throw for the host Merchants this weekend. This marks his first pitching appearance in Hampton as he threw for the Merchants in their last Mid Atlantic Fastpitch Travel League weekend going 2-2 with a save striking out 52 in 29 innings. He has pitched at the highest levels of men’s fast pitch softball since 1990 including stints on the national teams of the USA and Great Britain. Hillhouse has pitched or coached on six of the world’s seven continents.

PA Power has loads of national tournament experience as they won the 2005 Amateur Softball Association Class C Nationals and followed that with the 2006 National Softball Association National Championship. The Merchants have faced PA Power earlier this year in the Mid-Atlantic Fastpitch Travel League tournament and lost 7-1. Sketchers is a combination of two teams from Baltimore that will bring strong pitching to the tournament.

For more information on the tournament, please contact Media Director Jim Heath at 757-846-5369.

Google Maps Gets Even Better

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

By now, most of you are familiar with Google Maps, and know it is the favorite here at Fastpitchwest. It’s a great tool to find your way to a tournament, or just get a bird’s eye view of the place.

But Google Maps just got even better. You can now change the route (e.g. freeway) that Google gives you for driving directions. You know how sometimes you know taking a freeway is a better route to the tournament, but it doesn’t come up in Google maps (or any other)? Well, just grab the blue route line and put it on the road you want to take and it will recalculate those driving directions for you.

Don’t like the driving route Google Maps doled out to you? Now you can change the driving directions by grabbing the blue route line and dragging it to create a new destination point, which will in turn create a new route.

Click here and try it out.
