Player Diary from Prague CZ

Monday, June 18th, 2007

First in a continuing series of “player diaries” from the ISF World Cup in Prague, CZ, from Nate Devine, a member of Team USA, which is competing in the World Cup tournament there, June 18-24. Don’t take it too seriously, folks, as it’s tongue-in-cheek 😉 Besides, the guy’s been without sleep for two days.

Practice…We’re talkin’ bout practice?

Diary of a player

Well, we finally made it to Prague. What a journey so far. The plane ride was about seven and a half hours and we got our first taste of, or should I say smell of, Europe in the line. Apparently deodorant isn’t as high a priority to some. Not to say Europeans are stinky people, but the seven in front of us were. It was the first time I could look at Sonny Perkins and say, “Damn, you’re the best smelling guy around.” The worst thing was leaving at 4:30PM on Saturday and touching down at 6:00AM on Sunday. Where the hell did my Saturday night go? Usually I would have been buffaloed ten times by now. We’re here for business though, and playing for your country, no matter what country that may be, is very serious business. Not to mention a tremendous honor.

Driving from the airport was rather uneventful. I was expecting to be immediately submersed into Czech culture but to my disappointment it was much like a typical urban city in the United States…graffiti everywhere ! The one thing I did learn is that a fellow who goes by the name of “Spord” must be the hardest gansta in Prague…maybe even Central Europe. His “tag” is everywhere, like the McDonald’s of gangsta’s. Well, after this article, he may be the most notorious gangsta in the World. Hmmm, maybe I should have waited until I was gone to let out the secret of “Spord”. Maybe he doesn’t want to be on the internet…….what if he’s at the tourney….nah…”Spord” has better things to do, more buildings to tag.

Our hotel is huge. Its full of people from all over the world. Maxim Magazine was right. The women here are beautiful. The people must be on a tight budget here because no one is fat. With all the beer here, you would figure someone would have a beer gut. I’m beginning to feel self conscious. This place is also home to some of the classiest mullets. Seriously……….business in the front, party in the back. They run it real tight on the front and sides and then let it flow on the back. Put a hat on and you would never know he had short hair.

What….practice?….we’re talking bout practice? Yeah, in a few hours. We just arrived at the hotel and were all delirious and we have to practice. Coach Turner runs a tough practice. Mike, our trainer is assigned to warm ups. Ok, well usually my warm up consists of a chew and me trying to be a pitcher on the sidelines. By the time the “warm ups” were over, I was ready to cool down. We actually stretch here, for real. I didn’t realize I had muscles in some places.

The town has already shown some promise. There were fans at our practice, which means there might be fans at the games. The fields are in great shape, plush green grass and soft dirt infields. After a two hour practice it was time to head home for the night and try to sleep. Eating was no problem. To my surprise the food has been great. I recommend the gratinated chicken steak with ham and cheese. Sleeping, that’s another story. It’s 3:30AM right now and I can’t sleep. Maybe it’s because it’s 6:30PM in California or maybe I’m just a little excited. Probably the latter, after all, I am playing for my country….and that… is more than I thought it would be.

Well, its DEMO EHS tomorrow at 2:00PM. Finally we can talk about games.

Ghostkeeper to Vancouver for 2007 Senior Canadians

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Editor’s note: We gratefully thank Sports Editor Jim Swanson and the Prince George Citizen newspaper, both for granting permission to reprint their stories here at Fastpitchwest, and for providing the fastpitch community with such great coverage in the first place. Readers will recall that during last year’s Senior Canadian National Tournament, they ran feature stories on teams and players every day, in addition to the game by game reports, remarkable coverage for men’s fastpitch in this day and age, where many papers ignore the sport altogether. Today’s story, reprinted below is another well-written piece. Ghostkeeper moving from the hometown Black Bears to the arch rival Vancouver Grey Sox? Tantamount to Johnny Damon signing with the Yankees ! So to the folks at the Citizen, we say “well done — again”. Your newspaper’s coverage of men’s fastpitch is among the best in the nation. We’ve posted from a few more newspapers graciously providing coverage for men’s fastpitch, including the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls SD, the SE Missourian and the Du Quoin Evening Call in Illinois. Know of any others providing good coverage for men’s fastpitch? Let us know.

GREY SOX CATCH A CATCHER FROM P.G.

by JASON PETERS, Citizen staff

At the 2006 Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship in Prince George, Chad Ghostkeeper was front and centre in pulling down the hated Vancouver Grey Sox.

When this year’s nationals step on the diamond in St. John’s, Nfld., Ghostkeeper will be there. And he’ll be wearing a Grey Sox uniform.

Ghostkeeper, a 35-year-old Prince George resident, has signed on with the Grey Sox for the Canadian championship tournament, set for Aug. 26 to Sept. 2.

Has he crossed over to the dark side? He doesn’t see it that way.

“I don’t really see them as an enemy,” said Ghostkeeper, the all-star catcher at the 2006 nationals as a member of the now-defunct Prince George Black Bears. “They’ve been bugging me throughout the year (to play for them at nationals). There were a few teams that were bugging me, and I just thought I would go to Vancouver. I know a few guys on the team, and it’s a lot closer.”

During the 2006 tournament, played at Spruce City Stadium, the Grey Sox — loaded with national-team talent — were one of the favourites to leave town with the title. Because of their star-studded roster, they became a target for other teams. The Sox ended up 2-5 after the round-robin portion of the event, won their first playoff game, and were then eliminated after a 4-1 loss to the Black Bears. The Bears had also beaten the Grey Sox in round robin. That game, won 8-1 by Prince George, was cut short by the mercy rule.

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

With everyone feeling the pinch of high gas prices driving to tournaments and such, MSN’s gas price website provides a bit of relief. Click the photo icon above, then put in your zip code, to find the best gas prices in your area. To our friends north of the border, I have not yet found an equivalent site for the Canada, but if someone does, email me, jim (at) fastpitchwest.com.

Aurora Illinois Event Kicks Off

Wednesday, June 13th, 2007

A night filled with softball

From the Beacon News
By John Sahly staff writer

The Aurora Fastpitch Softball Association teams don’t usually cross paths that often. So tonight’s kickoff event at Stuart Sports Complex will be something of an anomaly.

That’s because all seven teams will be playing tonight, either in exhibitions against one another or in competitive games against out-of-town teams. Association president Bill Pfeiffer said tonight presents an opportunity to everyone involved and the rest of the community.

“We get all of the teams together so they can all appreciate who else is involved,” Pfeiffer said. “The parents then can see the players on the other teams in our organization, and any other fastpitch fans can see what’s going on. The games are still going to be competitive and they mean something, but this is more of a fun thing that you can go out and just play.”

Most of the younger teams (12-and-under, 14U, 16U and 18U) will be playing the early part of their schedules because of schools recently letting out for the summer.

On the men’s side, the Dolan and Murphy Shamrocks (20-4) are off to a good start this season. The Shamrocks finished third in the Dick Tracy Tournament in Rockford and the Jack Grafmeier Tournament in Kimberly, Wis., earlier in the season, and will play the men’s 23-and-under team, ATMI Precast.

The Shamrocks play primarily in tournaments in preparation for the ASA National Tournament in South Bend, Ind. If Dolan and Murphy is to improve on last year’s 1-2 record in the national tournament, it may be because of two of its pitchers, Juan Potolicchio and Jonas Mach.

“With Juan and Jonas, we’ve got two mid-to-high level pitchers and they’ve been pretty good for us,” said coach Robin Raider.

One of the other benefits of bringing together experienced players for a showcase night is that it allows the younger teams in the AFSA system the chance to get to watch the older players in action.

New Zealand Black Sox vs. Canada Series – June 15-16, 2007

NZCT Black Sox V Canada International Series
June 14th – June 16th
Orillia, Ontario

NZCT Black Sox prepared for pressure test
Thursday May 31st

It may have been over three years since the two teams last met on the softball diamond but the atmosphere will be electric when the New Zealand Community Trust Black Sox face Canada on their home turf next month.

The NZCT Black Sox fly out next week bound for Canada and a 12 day tour that will consist of four warm up games and six internationals.

NZCT Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase says such a short tour is unheard of and something the team has never done before. However he says it will be an ideal chance to set the framework for the 2009 World Championships which will also be held in Canada.

“Six internationals spaced over three days with two double headers each day against one of the best sides in the world. It will be a test of our team and give us a good indication of where we are at,” said Kohlhase.

Going into the tour the NZCT Black Sox hold the title of three time world champions having defeated Canada in the final of the 2004 World Championships to stay on top of the world.

Since that world championship victory in 2004 the Black Sox selection panel have increased the talent pool utilising up to 35 players on various tours in recent years. However there will be no experimenting on this tour.

“We are going there to win an international series and for the first time during this programme we have picked what we believe to be our best 17 athletes.

“The athletes understand that while they are the 17 going a number in the extended squad could well consider themselves unlucky to miss selection. This will be a test of the squad and the depth of the squad,” said Kohlhase.

Given that the world champs are just two years away Kohlhase says the tour will be a great chance to gauge where the team is at and understand the environment the team will be faced with in 2009 when they attempt to claim their fourth consecutive world title.

Due to the timing of the tour which sees the NZCT Black Sox taking to the diamond in their off season Kohlhase says he will be calling on all his players to stand up and perform.

“Traveling to Canada is a pretty tough assignment and we will be looking for everyone to deliver. Unlike what other teams are saying where they have a leadership group we talk of a team being “leader full”. We are very lucky to have experienced core of hardened internationals in this team and everybody has a role to play from the youngest guy in the squad Tyson Byrne through to the most experienced in Jarrad Martin”.
