ALBERTON — Outfielder Jeff Ellsworth of Alberton was not sounding the effects of sleep deprivation Wednesday afternoon.

“I didn’t sleep last night,” he said. And it was all because of a call he received Tuesday morning notifying him of his selection to Softball Canada’s 2006 senior men’s national team. (more…)

By Pat Healey

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – The Charlottetown Fawcetts bats were strong, but Saskatoon Aspen Interior Black Sox Jason Hill came up big when he had to. With two out and the score tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Hill (2-4) hit a Mike Bishop offering over the centerfield fence into the beer garden to win the thrilling game 6-5 dropping Charlottetown’s record to 2-2 here at the 2006 Canadian Senior Men’s fast pitch championships. Jeff Ellsworth of Alberton led the Fawcetts attack, going 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. Ellsworth’s ISC teammate with the Kegel Knights, Duane Clarkson, snapped his recent hitless slump as he went 4-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Also tops for the Fawcetts were Jason MacDonald (1-3, run scored) and Jason Blanchard (1-3). Mike Bishop suffered the loss going five innings in relief of starter Steve Langley, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and fanning five. Host team avoids early two-loss hole

by JASON PETERS, Citizen staff

Korrey Gareau showed precisely why he is considered one of the best pitchers in the world.

Sunday night at Spruce City Stadium, the Prince George Black Bears hurler tossed a three-hitter against the Saskatoon Aspen Interior Black Sox to lead the Bears to a 5-4 win. Gareau ended the game with 10 strikeouts, none bigger than his final one. With the tying run standing on third base in the form of Sean Whitten, Gareau fanned Darrell Joy to end the ball game. With the victory, the Black Bears evened their record at the Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship at 1-1.

Gareau and Joy — who are both on Team Canada’s 35-player list — are also teammates on The Farm Tavern, based in Madison, Wis. Gareau said he had a pretty good idea of how to work to Joy.

“(I threw) a drop ball and then struck him out with a rise ball,” said the 33-year-old Gareau, one of the Black Bears’ key pickup players for the tournament. “He was thinking drop ball and I came up with a rise ball.”

The victory was huge for the Bears, who could not afford to fall to 0-2 on opening day. Earlier Sunday, they blew a lead and lost 9-6 to the Charlottetown Razzy’s Roadhouse Fawcetts.

“We let the first one slip on us, and my duty was to try and get it back even again,” Gareau said.

Speaking of Illinois…..

Saturday, August 26th, 2006

Speaking of the great state of Illinois, a belated welcome from Fastpitchwest to the members of the Illinois section of the Fastpitchwest Forum. . We are honored to host the board members from the former www.ilfastpitch.com board, here at Fastpitchwest, and say “welcome”.

www.ilfastpitch.com was developed and hosted by Brian Tobin, who did an outstanding job of providing a place on the internet for this region of the country. With Brian’s assistance, we are happy to welcome Illinois to the FPW Forum. As you can see from the postings there, fastpitch is alive and well in the Illinois region, and on their forum board. Its members are among the most frequent posters to the entire Forum, so it’s a great place to catch up on all the action in that part of the country.

Favorite Maddy’s Photo from ISC II

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

One of my favorite shots taken by Maddy at this year’s ISC II Tournament of Champions in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Anyone know who the Harriston Mercury’s outfielder is? That hurts my back just looking at the photo. Great effort. He may not have caught the ball, but Maddy did 😉

There are currently five galleries up at www.maddysphotos.com, but these are only the preliminary galleries. Maddy is reviewing the many shots taken and will be posting more extensive galleries soon !

In the meantime, you can peruse the five galleries posted at this page (click menu buttons for Galleries 1 through 4, and one for “Kitchener”) And speaking of good shots, the one shown when you click the above link is a pretty sweet shot too.
