So Cal Bombers Announce Ambitious Schedule for 2006

Monday, January 16th, 2006

The So Cal Bombers, who recently announced the signing of All World catcher Darren Box to cap off a busy free agent season, announced their schedule for the 2006 season, playing in a number of top tournaments out west, as well as the midwest, which many of the top teams call home. They’ll do battle for the ASA Major title in South Bend, IN, then head on to the biggest challenge of them all, the ISC World Tournament in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. Last year — without the benefit of some of the recent all-star additions — the squad took 10th place out of 40 teams, the first time a team from California finished in the top 10 in more than a decade. This schedule will put them to the test.

February 18-19 Norwalk, CA
April 22-23 Palm Springs, CA
May 6-7 Red Rock-St. George, UT
May 26-28, Pueblo, Colorado

Fedlock, Midland Join Forces for 2006 AAU

Monday, January 16th, 2006

The following is one in a series of team profiles for the AAU Tournament, January 19-22, 2006:

http://www.fastpitchwest.com/images2/aau_usa.jpg

Perhaps the FedLock Falcon team name for the DisneyWorld 2006 AAU Tournament should read “FedLock Midland Chicago.” Two quality ballclubs are joining forces to journey to the warm temperatures of Orlando, Florida for a few days of top competition in January. The extended weather forecast predicts daytime temps to be in the mid-70 degree range. As long as it doesn’t dip into the 30 degree range, as it did a few years ago in Orlando, the northern ballplayers will be quite pleased to be there.

2006 AAU FedLock is a combo platter of Midland players, FedLock players, and a sprinkling of old friends & some new faces. Always, however, FedLock is made up of good people who play the game with class.

Kyle Beane – UT — Midland slugger, 4-time ASA Major All American, 2-time ISC All World, USA Team Pan Am Silver Medalist.
Todd Moore – UT — Young burner with veteran abilities from 4 ISC WT.
Steve Horning – UT — Longtime Captain of Midland Explorer, 6-time ASA Major All American.
Steve Roberts – UT — The Sarge, Midland’s top RBI producer & great clutch hitter.
Sean Zaborowski – UT — Veteran of 5 ISC WT, talented & smooth.
Ken Coles – UT– 12-year FedLock vet, ASA All American, slick on the basepaths.
Doug Sleep – P — Too many awards to mention, always on a top ten Major squad for ISC & ASA, USA Team, defines the word competitor.
Dewey Dyck – P — One of the top pitchers in Major, many huge years with Miller Toyota & other top Major clubs.
Leo Roman – P — Excellent thrower for many years, outstanding Chicago chucker.
Joe Hineline – P — One of the USA’s brightest pitching prospects at 17 years old, helped lead his team to top finish at 2005 Juniors.
Luis Saldana – UT — Superb & slick Chicago product, plays anywhere.
Tony Kahan – UT — Veteran Chicago player, Team USA Maccabiah Gold & Silver, personality plus.
Steve Sell – UT — FedLock & Circle Tap backstop, led FedLock in hitting in Fargo ISC WT 2004.
Paul Walford – UT — Labeled by Jody Hennigar as the most complete player he’s ever faced, Walley still plays every position well.
Larry Hineline – UT — Always a tough out, this veteran Baltimore player has played in dozens of ASA & ISC competitions.
Jody Hennigar – Coach — The Legend has retired from active play, but will be along for his vast expertise.
Mike Groves – Manager — Just when you think you’re out…………

Looking forward to being in the ballyard.

Regards,

Mike Groves

In last year’s tournament, Florida Fastpitch finished in the “Elite Eight”, knocking off the Hallman Twins from Canada, in a 12-9 slugfest, before falling to eventual 3rd place finisher, Mexicali, 2-0, just missing a spot in the Final Four. Skipper Steve Thurmer guided the Heflin-St. Louis team last year, which held a spot in ISC Ranking’s Top 10 all year long.

Their roster:

So Cal Bombers Sign Three Time ISC World Champion Darren Box

Saturday, January 14th, 2006

The So Cal Bombers have acquired the services of Darren Box from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada & Kelly Wenstrom from Langdon, Alberta, Canada for the 2006 season. The team announced the signing Friday, stating:

“The Bombers are extremely happy to add a world class player like Darren Box and Kelly Wenstrom.”

The team is still in negotiations with one more player, the Bombers will be posting their final roster and tourney schedule for the 2006 Season in the coming days.

(Click photo to enlarge)

Editor’s Notes:

Box, at age 29, has already achieved what many spend a career trying to accomplish. He has three ISC World Tournament Championship rings, having been a member of the Broken Bow Spirit, which won the tournament in 2001, 2003 and 2004. He was selected All World catcher at the ISC World Tournament in those championship runs, and named the tournament’s MVP in 2001 at age 25.

Darren hails from the home of “The Great One”, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, is currently a member of the Senior Canadian’s men’s team (Team Canada), and has competed internationally, playing in the Pan American Qualifier in Guatemala in 2002. He was also a member of the Canadian championship team in 1999.

Box, at 6 foot 4, 240 pounds, is one of those rare athletes that combines size, power and speed, even batting leadoff at times last year. Darren started playing fastball at age 6, also playing hockey until he was 15. When he’s not playing fastball, Box makes his living as a private investigator, which gives him the freedom to take time off for fastball. His talent and leadership could propel the Bombers to a place among the elite teams in the game.

In 2004, the Bombers finished 10th out of 40 teams in the ISC World Tournament, the first time a California team had done so in more than a decade. With the addition of Box and several other Canadian players, including pitcher Ryan Brand, the Bombers are positioned to run with the big dogs in 2006.
