David Bell’s Basketball Broadcast – 5:45pm PST Tonight

Thursday, December 22nd, 2005

A note from our friend in Las Vegas, and my teammate-to-be in 2006, David Bell:

Tonight at 5:45 pm Pacific Time Eastern Commerce from Toronto, Canada who just won the Nike Holiday Classic in Las Vegas plays against Palo Verde from Las Vegas. Eastern Commerce is also the 4-time defending Quad “A” Ontario Provincial Gold Medalists. The Panthers are returning from San Diego where last night they won the Grossmont Winter Classic and are currently the top rated team in Nevada and undefeated at 9-0. Palo Verde has also been to the Nevada State Championship game the last three seasons, winning it all in 2003-04.

Today’s Morning Brief revisits the 2005 AAU International Tournament, from a story featured in Softball Magazine:

[ORLANDO, FL – 1/23/05]- The “Davids” in the world of men’s fastpitch met the “Goliaths” at the Sixth Annual AAU Men’s International Fastball tournament at the Disney Complex in Orlando, Florida, January 20-23, 2005 with sometimes surprising results. At the end of the day, it was a pair of Goliaths, The Bar/Circle Tap of Denmark Wisconsin, USA and Los Socios of Venezuela squaring off for the title. However, the Goliaths of the tournament met some stiff competition from some upstart “Davids” of the tournament along the way.

David Bell Out of Retirement and into a Black Sox Uniform

Friday, December 2nd, 2005

David Bell has traded his golf clubs for a bat and glove, returning to play the game he loves, and will be a member of Fred Hanker’s 2006 Black Sox.

“Bell played sparingly the last two seasons, hosting his Spring Swing Fastpitch Weekend, a national qualifier in Fresno, the “C” Nationals in Hastings in 2004 and last year in a 4 game friendship series against his buddies from Bremen, Indiana, DC Current with brothers Mike and Dean Huppert. “I thought it was time to step away, spend time with my wife and kids and coach the boys. I have been playing some competitive golf in an amateur tour but it’s not the same as playing the great game of fastpitch. I don’t know how many years I’ll try to keep playing, or if this is a one year return, but I am returning to my favorite sport to play.”

Major Upgrade of Firefox (1.5) Released Today

Wednesday, November 30th, 2005

We generally include our “tech” notes and recommendations in the “tech” section of the Fastpitchwest Forum. From time to time, though, we run across a significant development in the world of tech that we think warrants inclusion in the Morning Brief. Today’s release of a major upgrade of the Firefox webbrowser, version 1.5 is cause for special attention.

For those of you already using Firefox, I think you will love the upgrade from version 1.07 to version 1.50. Rather than telling you what’s new, I’ll leave that to the folks that designed it tell you. Click the logo above.

For those of you asking “What is Firefox”, we’ll say simply that it’s an alternative — and big improvement — over Internet Explorer. (more…)

Happy Birthday, Vin

Tuesday, November 29th, 2005

We send along our birthday greetings to Hall of Fame Baseball announcer, Vin Scully. 78 and still going strong. Fifty-five (55) years behind the mike for the Dodgers. Incredible. Happy Birthday, Vin.

For a bit more on his illustrious career, click here.

There are many, many audio clips of Vin Scully’s fine work. Click here to listen to one of my favorites from a game I was lucky enough to see in person, between the Dodgers and the Yankees in June 2004. Who would know that Dave Roberts, featured in this clip, would be turning the Yankees on their ear, months later, as a member of the Red Sox? It’s a large file, so please be patient while it download to play.
