Rounders, Rude Pac Win Again, Among Elite Eight in Winner’s Bracket

Saturday, September 3rd, 2005

Two teams from So Cal ASA Alliance won again Saturday to remain unbeaten, and advanced to the Winner’s Bracket Elite Eight at the ASA “C” National Tournament. As the tournament heads into Day 4 of 5, only 8 of the original 65 teams remain unbeaten:

1) Rude Pac, CA
2) Global Pacific, CA
3) El Segundo Rounders, CA
4) Team Taylor, CA
5) Bob Hoffman PA
6) Penn Power, PA
7) West Coast Cardinals, CA
8) Cyclones, OH

The El Segundo Rounders, CA won their fourth game without a loss, a 7-0, 3 hit complete game shutout by pitcher Mitch Mendenhall against Country Club Villa, of California. The game was much closer than the final score indicated, as the Rounders led only 2-0 with two out in the top of the 6th. Linnell Culver drove in Erik Geierman in the first inning, while Gerald Pyle hit a solo shot in the fourth. In the sixth, Tommy Morton led off with a walk, the first issued to a Rounder in the game. After two outs were recorded, catcher Don Younger hit what appeared to be a routine pop-up to the third baseman, but he dropped the ball, and Younger scrambled safely to first, just in front of the throw. Andy Lawry coaxed a walk to load the bases, bringing Erik Geierman to the plate. Geierman drilled his third hit of the day up the middle driving in two. Michael “Spanky” Thomas followed with his third hit of the day, a two run single through the left side to run the score to 6-0. Catcher Donald Younger added an RBI single in the top of the 7th to produce the final 7-0 score. Meanwhile, Mitch Mendenhall allowed just three hits, striking out four and walking none for the win, in what many called his finest outing of the year.

Rude Pac, CA outlasted Black Oak Casino, 11-10 in one of the wildest, and most exciting games of the tournament. Black Oak Casino, with ISC World players Mike Butler and Nate Devine, were averaging 12 runs a game in their first two contests, and 8 home runs. Rude Pac won two earlier games by scores of 16-6 and 9-8, so it was not surprising to see a slugfest develop. Rude Pac was ahead in the early going behind the pitching of Tommy Obregon, leading 11-6 at one point. BOC closed the gap to 11-8, then scored two more in the final frame with the tying run at second base.

Team Taylor, CA handled Nielson Gamblers easily, winning 8-0 and will face the Rounders at 2pm Sunday afternoon.

Global Pacific, OR beat Bay Area High Reach, and will take on Rude Pac in another 2pm Sunday afternoon game.

Bob Hoffman, PA defeated fellow Pennsylvanians, the Allentown Patriots, while yet another Pennsylvania team, Penn Power rallied late in the game to defeat one of the pre-tournament favorites, McLaughlin Air, CA, 5-4, which won the Memorial Weekend Qualifier at the same Louis Park in Stockton earlier in the year.

The West Coast Cardinals, CA topped BMC West, UT, while the Cyclones of Ohio crushed the Crush of Maryland, 11-0 for the final spots in the Elite Eight of the winner’s bracket.

Two other So Cal ASA Alliance teams remained alive into Saturday evening, with RAW winning 11-10, while the Amigos rallied from down 6-1 to win 7-6, on a Hector Spathias hit off the fence, driving in Vincent Garcia in the bottom of the 7th. Anthony Martinez picked up the win in relief. The Amigos were set to face Mel’s Plumbing late Saturday night, with the result not available at press time. The Amigos need to win to survive to Sunday.

Fastball’s popularity on the upswing

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

Al’s Fastball carries a link to story in the St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada newspaper about the resurgence of interest in men’s fastball, which notes “Those who like the game like it a lot”

Fastball’s popularity on the upswing

ERIC BENDER, Free Press Sports Reporter 2005-08-27

ST. THOMAS — Those who like the game like it a lot.

Fastball has waxed and waned in St. Thomas for decades and like a rise ball, it’s on the upswing with the 2005 Canadian senior men’s championship that opens tomorrow at Doug Tarry complex in the southeastern sector of the city.

The 13-team tournament ends next Sunday, with the bronze-medal game at 11 a.m. followed by the championship final at 1:30 p.m.

Bill Horne, head coach of the host St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials, said there are enough young players to sustain the sport.

“Maybe not right around here now but over Kitchener way, there’s a lot of fastball and in the South Perth league. And there were 20 teams at the midget championship.”

Get the link to the whole story here, at Al’s Fastball.

Editor’s Note: The ISC II is a good testament to the growing popularity of the game in that area, with the top finishers in the tournament all coming from the Ontario province. And while some say that there are no young players coming up through the ranks – this year’s ISC II runner-up, the Port Elgin Blue Devils have an average age of 23.7. Youth shall be served.

The ISC-II Tournament of Champions, regarded by some as the best intermediate level tournament on the continent, will be in Kitchener/Waterloo, Ontario, Canada in 2006. The favorable exchange rate ($1.25 to $1.00 at last check) provides American teams with a chance to experience fastball in Ontario, at affordable prices. Kitchener is located less than an hour’s drive from Toronto, which provides direct flights from all major U.S. Cities, and nearby Buffalo (2.5 hour drive) and Detroit (3.5 hour drive) providing even more affordable alternatives. And, as witnessed by the ISC Sportsmanship Award garnered by Ontario’s senior men’s team, the Hallman Twins, Ontario offers some of the friendliest people in the game. Watch our blog “The Deuce” for all the unofficial coverage of the growing ISC II division. In five short years, it has grown to 38 strong.

The ISC II Tournament of Champions offers:

* Four (4) game guarantee for all teams;
* Five (5) games guaranteed for 24 teams advancing to the playoff round;
* Live audio broadcasts of approximately 24 games, including most of the playoff round.
* Championship game on the same day and field as the ISC World Tournament, which this year drew an estimated 5,000 fans.

All 2005 Broadcast Archives Now Available through BallParkRadio.com

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

To all fastball fans:

The archives for the 2005 ISC II Tournament of Champions played at Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin are now available via Ballparkradio/Sportjuice. The 2005 Archive consists of 26 games.

For easy access:

* Go to Ballparkradio, http://www.ballparkradio.com
* Click the ISC II Tournament of Champions logo at the top of the main page;
* Once you get to the ISC II Sportsjuice page, hold down the Control Key (to avoid your pop-up blockers, if you use them) click on the green rectangle near the top right that says archives
* From the drop down menu, choose the game you want to listen to and play.

Please Note: In all Sportsjuice archives, you can now scroll through the timeline of the game by clicking, holding, and dragging the slider bar to listen to whatever portion of the game you want. This is different from previous years’ archives, where Sportsjuice games
could only be heard linearly, from start to finish.

The ISC II scoreboard, with links to the box scores and play-by-play is a great companion while you’re listening. It enables you to jump around (fast forward or go backwards) during the broadcast to find a particular hit or play.

For those who have inquired, we will be making audio CD’s of the games available for purchase. Watch The Deuce Blog at Fastpitchwest.com (www.fastpitchwest.com/thedeuce) or Al’s Fastball for further announcements.

The ISC II broadcast crew sends out a big thank you to all who tuned into the broadcasts. We thoroughly enjoyed the hundreds of emails received from members of the listening audience, which topped 8,000 in terms of hits on the game links, and we appreciate the kind words and encouragement. All of us are looking forward to even bigger and better things in 2006 in Kitchener, ON.

Cheers,
The ISC II Broadcast Crew

Editor’s Note re: Al’s Fastball Archives

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

As a member of Al Doran’s Mailing List and daily reader of his Escribe archive, I was sorry to hear of the continuing problem in trying to restore service. [See Note from Al in story below] Al did a remarkable job at the ISC Word tournament, getting scores, boxes, play-by-play and more posted promptly to the ISC website, www.iscfastpitch.com. However, I think we all missed our daily dose from Al in the old familiar Escribe format for the mailing list archive. It was especially unfortunate that the crash took place during the ISC World Tournament.

Fastpitchwest.com has provided a temporary home for Al’s archives, and will continue to do so as long as necessary. We ask only that you bear with the fact that our archive page is a bit less user friendly than the old Escribe page. As Al noted:

“For now we are not calling it the TEMP site, its our only site at the moment.”

The biggest complaint about the archive page that we are hosting is that the newest items are at the bottom instead of the top of the page, requiring readers to scroll to the bottom to see the latest news. I have the same complaint myself. Unfortunately, the software that we use at present to generate the archive page for Al’s does not permit me to change that format. (Control-End keys together will take you quickly to the bottom of the page on most browsers)

While Al looks at his options, we are researching software that would archive the emails in a format similar to Escribe. In the meantime, we have shortend the URL to eliminate the “.htm” at the end, to simplify things, to just:

http://www.fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball

Please pass this web address/URL along to your friends so they can find Al’s Archive. You can bookmark it by clicking the link and then Control D.

Message from Al Doran re: Al’s Fastball Archives

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

We pass along the following note from Al Doran regarding the recent problems the Escribe site that had been hosting his mailing list:

eScribe is down and maybe out, maybe for good.

eScribe went down over a week ago, just as the ISC’s were getting underway. This is not the first time they have crashed and been down for more than a few hours. In June 2004 they went down and were down for weeks while the owner bought and set up all new servers.

eScribe is privately owned, my company has nothing to do with it. Al’s Fastball is just one of hundreds of list servers that make use of the services provided by eScribe. This service has always been free.

Last year in June we learned that the owner, Scott Paterson, was working with a couple of unpaid volunteers to keep eScribe going. He had to buy expensive computer equipment to replace the servers that had worn out and died.

This week we learned that they major technical problems and the prognosis is not good.

See Scott’s note to me today:

Al

Dead power supply and lack of financial support and non-paid volunteers. Going to try to fix it myself as soon as I have time, but really, with no end-user financial support, it’s most likely done for.
-Scott

This does not sound good.

Thousands of fastball fans miss their easy access to recent posts AND to a virtual gold mine of history on the game, posts from the past several years. We are encouraging Scott to carry on, which is not easy as he cannot receive email any longer @escribe.com, the system is totally down. We do write the occasional very short note to Scott at his work address but I cannot give this out, his employer frowns upon getting private email at his work place.

In the interim, we have been using Jim Flanagan’s TEMP site, as our only site for posting fastball news. That site is: http://www.fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball.htm

For now we are not calling it the TEMP site, its our only site at the moment.

We are looking at other options as the temp site does have some drawbacks, including the fact that the latest postings are at the bottom of the page and not the top. As well, if someone sends me a post and then changes their mind, its not that easy to remove the post in error as eScribe was.

Jim Flanagan has very kindly provided this site and I would most appreciate if you could tell your friends about it, many fans may not know about it. We have almost 2,000 fans on our subscriber list but we estimate there are at least that many who were looking daily at eScribe to get their fastball news.

Thanks
Al Doran
