Anthony Martinez, Jason Obregon, Kevin Castillo and Issac Hernandez earn First Team All American Honors

From the So Cal ASA website:

“The Young Bucks lost in the final of the winner’s bracket game to defending champions, LeMay’s, 8 – 5, but rebounded behind Anthony Martinez to defeat another strong team from Sioux City, South Dakota 9 – 2 and force a rematch with LeMay. The Championship game was a hitter’s fest that had the lead change numerous times. Anthony started the game and was relieved by Beau Brooks in the 5th inning. With the score tied at 13 in the bottom of the 7th, the Young Bucks scored the winning run and force the “if” game.

However, due to a 6:00PM scheduled game time, a flight scheduled for 9:00PM and an 1:30 drive, the Young Bucks were not able to finish competing for the National Championship and were awarded the second place trophy. Anthony Martinez finished the tournament with a perfect 4 – 0 record and Beau Brooks finished with a 2 – 1 record, including the big win in the Championship game.”

ASA Major Tournament Gets Underway Thursday, Aug. 4

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

Rod Peterson’s Farm Tavern Set to Defend ASA Major Title

The ASA Men’s Major Tournament gets underway Thursday at 6pm EST (3pm west coast time), at Altamonte Springs, Florida, with two opening round games:

The Farm Tavern, Madison, WI vs. Quaker Riversharks, PA
Tampa Bay Smokers, FL vs. Keating Fitness, PA

The Farm Tavern has won the tournament the last two years in a row, and will go for a “three-peat” in 2005. Last year, they were led by pitcher Dean Holoien, who set a new ASA record for 21 strikeouts in a game, and threw a no-hitter in the championship game win over Broken Bow. Click here to read Bill Plummer’s recap of last year’s finale, courtesy of Al’s Fastball.

Rumor has it that a couple of local (and well known) So Cal players will be wearing the Farm’s familiar “pig” logo tomorrow night, joining another Californian who is a regular member of the squad Todd Budke, while a Northern California player may be in a Riversharks uniform. Budke was a First Team All American at third base in last year’s tournament.

The winner of the Farm-Riversharks game will play Florida Fastpitch, which drew a first round bye, while the winner of the Tampa Bay-Keatings game will face Team Iowa, which got a first round forfeit/bye with the So Cal Bombers dropping out of the tournament.

The six team tournament runs through Saturday night. Click here for the bracket.

Vancouver Challenge Saturday Results

Sunday, July 31st, 2005

Vancouver, BC The 4th Annual Vancouver Challenge Mens FP tournament continued on Saturday with beautiful west coast weather, under sunny skies and warm temperatures at South Memorial Park in Vancouver. Easily the largest crowd in recent history for Mens Faspitch in the Lower Mainland were treated to a full day of 9 games that wrapped up shortly after midnight local time. Pool play results from Saturday were as follow:

Saskatoon Black Sox 6 – Calgary Smokers 5
WP – Trevor Ethier (6) in relief of Sean Whitten

A good ball game between these fine teams, with a back and forth affair that
finally ended using the international tiebreaker rule. HR – Trent Rubley,
Calgary.

Broken Bow Spirit 8 – New West Van City 6
WP – Mike Piechnik (7) in relief of Gerald Muizelaar
LP – Dan Valachy
This game proved to be one of the most exciting contests of the day, with
several lead changes. Van City tied the game in the bottom of 7 with 2 outs
only to have Bow rebound in extra innings to score 2 and take the victory.
HR – Brian Abrey, Van City – a 2 out grand slam shot that gave his team a
short lived 5 – 4 lead in the 5th inning.

Prince George Black Bears 3 – Saskatoon 0
WP – Collin McKenzie
LP – Trevor Ethier
Pitcher Collin McKenzie paved the way for the Prince George victory giving
up 1 hit and racking up 12 strikeouts. Harv Wiens lead the offensive attack
with a 2 run home run. HR- Harv Wiens, Prince George.

ICE – “In Case of Emergency”

Tuesday, July 26th, 2005

This one doesn’t exactly fall under the heading of fastball, but with so many of us on the road for tournaments and such, it seemed worth mentioning.

Paramedics in some cities are encouraging people to enter “ICE” numbers into their cell phone contacts. “ICE”, as in “In Case of Emergency”. Here’s what they suggest:

By entering the acronym ICE – for In Case of Emergency – into the mobile’s phone book, users can log the name and number of someone who should be contacted in an emergency. So that paramedics can easily contact your loved ones just in case. Several different contacts should be noted ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, etc.

A good idea.

Third Time the Charm for Santa Rosa Storm, Wins ASA Nationals Berth

Saturday, July 23rd, 2005

The disappointment of losing two one-run games to McLaughlin Air and the Rounders on the final day of the Class C National Qualifier last month in Stockton is all but forgotten now that the Santa Rosa Storm has qualified in a National Championship Qualifier held this weekend (July 23-24) in Hayward. The Storm defeated Quality Fence Kings of Santa Rosa, 9-1, and King Real Estate, 9-3, on Saturday to advance into Sunday’s winners bracket finals against Bottom Line (Elk Grove). Bottom Line opened with a 9-4 win over the Oroville Braves, outlasted Black Oak Casino of Sonora, 16-7, and then held off Country Club Villa, 8-4, to move in opposite The Storm. Going into Saturday’s late games, Italian Athletic Club was paired against Oroville, and the winner was to play Country Club Villa, and in the other loser’s bracket games, Bay Area High Reach was to play Black Oak Casino with the winner being paired against King Real Estate. Two more teams out of the six remaining teams in the losers bracket will advance to Sunday’s play and also qualify for the National Tournament. In Saturday’s first game, the Storm took on Qualify Fence, a young team from Santa Rosa which won its first tournament game, 6-3, over the Stogies of Lodi behind the pitching of Jeff Nystrom. Veteran Chris Hamner pitched a four-hitter as the Storm prevailed 9-1 over Quality Fence in five innings. Jewells Valesi, Brian Osborn, and Rick Faccini all went 2×3 and Casey Hillman went 2×2, scored three and drove in three to lead the Storm. Jim Vargas stopped King Realty with a seven hitter and only one earned run. Vargas also singled, doubled and walked and drove in two runs, while his son, Mike, was 2×3, Gary Dower 2×3, Rick Kane 2×4, and Valesi 3×5 with two RBI.
