Jeremy Spear’s “Polynesian Power” at Pacifika 2005 (NY)

Saturday, May 7th, 2005

A note from our friend, Jeremy Spear, director and producer of the feature length film “FASTPITCH”. Though this note is not about fastpitch, Jeremy’s earlier film has provided a tremendous amount of exposure for the game, so we thought one good turn deserved another. We understand that “Fastpitch” (The Movie) is being sought for the New York Baseball Film Festival. We wish him the best in all of his endeavors, and if for some reason, you haven’t seen “Fastpitch” (The Movie), click here for details. It’s available on DVD.

Polynesian Power at Pacifika 2005 (NY Theatrical Premiere)!!! POLYNESIAN POWER:ISLANDERS IN PRO FOOTBALL (Narrated by “The Rock”); Sunday May 22 7:30pm, Cantor Film Center #200, 36 East 8th Street, NYC; (Preceded by Academy Award© nominated short Two Cars, One Night)Ticket admission:$10.00 (does not include after screening party)

Aloha Friends! If you missed the ESPN broadcasts in February please catch it here in New York City at Pacifika 2005. Pacifika is the brainchild of my wife Janu and her partner Michelle Akina of the Hawaii Cultural Foundation. Now in its 3rd year, Pacifika is a special one-of-a-kind festival that has no true counterpart, even in Hawaii, Aotearoa or other Pacific locales. Please spread the word. At Sunday Night’s screening, Tama Waipara who contributed brilliant tracks for Polynesian Power will also play live music during the event. Rumor has it that American Samoan Congressman Eni Faleomavaega will also honor us with his attendance and I will conduct a Q&A after the screening. Keep an eye out for NBC-TV critic Jeffrey Lyons and his round-up review of Pacifika onFriday am May 20th on Today in New York. Hope to see you there. Please pass this along – It should be a great night!

Peace and aloha,
Jeremy

Foul Ball Takes Out Maddy’s Lense

Saturday, April 30th, 2005

We are sorry to report that a foul ball took out Maddy’s best zoom lense Saturday night at the Red Rock tournament in St. George. She was in between shooting and helping with lineups for our Ballparkradio.com broadcasts when a hard foul ball struck the lense head on. She did take a fair number of photos before the mishap, but the galleries for Sunday will be more limited as a result.

With gas prices going through the roof and roads trips getting more expensive, I thought this link might be of some help in finding the lowest gas prices around:

Click here for the temporary archive, and be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page for the newest items posted. (Our “quick links” for Al’s Fastball at the bottom of each page at Fastpitchwest will continue to point to the Escribe site, so you can check and see if it’s back up and running. A note from Al Doran:

eScribe is unfortunately down again.

They were down for part of the weekend and then came back up but they have been down for the last day or so. We believe they are working on the problem, however they have hundreds of clients and do not normally update each of us as to the status of the site. http://www.escribe.com/ Scott, the chap who hosts the site does so as a volunteer and has a full time job in addition to keeping the eScribe archives active.

We hope they are back up soon, keep watching.

In the meantime, we have been posting all the news to http://fastpitchwest.com/alsfastball.htm
the temporary news site so kindly set up by our friend Jim Flanagan. Be sure to visit his site
http://www.fastpitchwest.com/

thanks for your patience
Al

Mark Bennett on National TV

Thursday, April 14th, 2005

Speaking of (longtime So Cal Bucks pitcher) Mark Bennett, we hear that he’ll be on National TV tomorrow morning, April 15. No, he won’t be pitching in a fastpitch game. More like shoveling horse something-or-other. Mark and his wife were selected from among hundreds who write in to enlist the help of the morning news show.

Friday April 15, Mark Bennett and his wife Tami will be on the feature series “Anchor to the Rescue”. Dave Price the CBS morning weatherman comes to their ranch to help fix up/clean up their barn. It will be aired between 8:00 am and 9:00 am PST.

4/15/05 Update: The show ran this morning, but for those of you who missed it and want to view the segment, click this link (then click the “free video” link at the upper left”). Happy Trails! Rumor has it that the Bennetts are accepting applications for those who want to do this work on a regular basis.

Google’s Latest: “Keyhole” Software”, Joystick Control of the Planet

Saturday, April 9th, 2005

No games this weekend? Tired of smacking that poor penguin around? Well, if you liked the “satellite photo” feature of Google Maps, you’re gonna love this one. Google has aquired “Keyhole” software, which provides a video/animated version of the satellite maps. It’s like having a joystick control of the planet:

http://www.keyhole.com/

(Be sure to try out the various controls, including “tilt”, which makes it seem like you’re flying a plane.)

Baseball stadiums are easy to spot. (click the box at left if you can’t see them right away) Fastball fields too, if you know where to find them. Kimberly Wisconsin’s legendary Sunset Park, Portland’s Delta Park (Rose Cup) were a couple that I was able to zoom in on. Even if you decide not to pay the $30 a year to keep the service, the 7 day free trial is worth the time it takes to sign up and download it. A great time waster at work. Your boss says get it out of your system this weekend, ’cause there’s real work to be done next week!

Post an address or coordinates in the “comments” section if want to share a fastball field or something interesting with the rest of our readers.

Google Satellite Maps/Photos

Tuesday, April 5th, 2005

Here is the latest toy from Google, Satellite Maps/Photos. See your house from outer space. This is guaranteed to cost you 30 minutes out of your day. Go ahead, try and limit yourself to just one search. I guarantee you’ll do more than one. All kidding aside, it is a great tool for finding unfamiliar ballparks, letting you actually see them. They’re easy to spot. For those of you headed to the next SoCal ASA Alliance event at Palm Springs, click here for DeMuth Park, 4375 Mesquite, Palm Springs, CA. (You can drag the picture with your mouse to see to the left or right, or use the bar on the left to zoom in and out, to spot the ballfields.)

Click this link, then the little “Satellite” link on the upper right: Google Satellite Maps, then enter address at the top.

Alright you geniuses at Google. Want to really impress me? Give us a zoom feature that will let us watch the games being played!
