For Immediate Release – ISC Rankings June 8

June 9, 2010 – Kitchener Rivershark Twins and Jarvis Travelers finished in a dead heat atop the June 8 ISC Rankings, splitting the #1 and #2 votes amongst the 10 committee members.

While Kitchener has yet to see action, Jarvis took about two-thirds of their expected line-up to the Snapper Shootout where they finished 2-1 in pool play, dropping an upset decision to Alvinston Indians, before play was washed out on Sunday.

Teams 3, 4 & 5 are all still bunched closely together, led by the #3 New York Gremlins who swept week one of the Mid-Atlantic Travel League. The #4 Chicago/NY Domincana will kick off their season this weekend in Midland while #5 California A’s are fresh off their triumph at the Best of the West tournament.

The top 10 (with pre-season ranking in brackets) is as follows:

1. Kitchener, ON Rivershark Twins (1)
1. Jarvis, ON Travelers (2)
3. New York, NY Gremlins (3)
4. Chicago/NY Dominicana (4)

7. Elkhart, IA Albaugh Inc. (7)
8. Saskatoon, SK Diamondbacks (8)
9. Decatur, IL Pride (9)

Google Map Previews in Gmail

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

Editor’s note: This new feature in Gmail seems made to order for fastball player and fans. Instead of copying the address to your next tournament, opening google maps, and then pasting the address in, Gmail gives you a map link/preview right inside Gmail.

To activate, go to “Settings”, then “Labs”, then “Enable” the map preview feature. It works well.

From the Google Blog:

Google Maps previews in Gmail
Posted by Mark Knichel, Software Engineer

I often receive emails containing addresses in them — where to meet for dinner, the location of my friend’s new apartment, etc. To find out where these places actually are, I have to copy the address, open up Google Maps, and paste it in. Today, we’re making it easier to see maps of all the addresses you receive in Gmail and Google Buzz.

Enable “Google Maps previews in mail” from the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, and any time you receive an address or a Google Maps link in an email, a preview will appear containing an interactive Google Map of that location. Any Google Maps URL will work, but we currently only extract US addresses (we’re working on making addresses around the world work).

Rain Ends 2010 Snapper Shootout

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

With a ton of rain overnight and continuing rain for most of the day forecasted, the tournament committee has decided that the tournament will be cancelled.

The total prize money was dispersed as following:

DIVISION WINNERS will receive $600. These include Niagara Snappers, Elmira Expos, Alvinston Indians and Waterdown Hammer.

2nd PLACE IN DIVISION will receive $350. These include Quyon Flyers, Hill United, Jarvis Travelers and Palermo Athletics.

A SIDE had a total of $3800 assigned to it. Money was awarded based on finish in round robin play.

B SIDE TEAMS will receive $50. These include KW Cubs, Owen Sound Selects, Cobourg Force and Oshawa BB’s.

B WINNER was to receive $200 in prize money so we divided it by 4.

All $4000 in prize money was dispersed in what we believe was a fair fashion, rewarding the teams based on their finish in round robin play. We appreciate all the teams understanding in this situation.

Best of the West News coverage on local TV

Saturday, June 5th, 2010

The 20th annual Best of the West tournament was featured by KEYTV, the local ABC affiliate in Santa Barbara, California.

Click here to view their video and to view their original news story, excerpted below.

The Best of the West is celebrating its 20th anniversary, with some of the best men’s fast-pitch players in the world taking part.

Ten teams from the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, Mexico and South America are involved in the longest running open tournament in California. Two berths in the 2010 ISC World Tournament will be awarded to the two top finishers.

Witnessing the tournament is a marvel in hand/eye coordination as some of the pitchers throw about 85 m.p.h., which would be equivalent to 100 m.p.h. in baseball.
