Liberty Prevails

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

Liberty may not have prevailed in some parts of the country today, but it did in Santa Fe Springs California, as Liberty Fastpitch captured the top spot among 15 teams at the SCIFL League Weekend at Santa Fe Springs California.

Veteran Eddie Patterson (a former shortstop and catcher) was in the circle for Liberty Fastpitch in their 2-1 championship game win over the Colton Dirt Bags. Liberty Building Maintenance & Services, Inc. is the new sponsor for the former Flor de Cana squad headed up by centerfielder David Carrillo and skipper Tom Dudley.

As noted at the team’s website:

In 2009, the team posted a combined record of 37-22-1. The season was highlighted by a 3rd Place finish at the 2009 North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) – A Division World Series, which drew 67 teams from around the country.

A look at the Liberty lineup, after the jump.

The SCIFL has seen a growth in the number of teams from recent years, with many teams boasting solid pitching staffs two and three deep, including the likes of Mark Bennett, Matt Barnes, Mark Higgins, Lonnie Brooks, Billy Montana, Dan Zupp, Anthony Martinez, Darrin McCall, Randy Clay, Tommy Obregon, Brett Pobantz, David Blackburn, Ronnie Rupp, and Gerald Pyle to name a few.

Robert Hernandez, who has organized the So Cal leagues for the better part of a decade, continues as the president of the SCIFL (the So Cal Independent Fastpitch League. As other leagues have fallen by the wayside, the SCIFL continues to draw teams and players from Southern California, Arizona, Nevada, and surrounding areas, providing a place for top-notch competition. (California’s other top league West Coast Fastpitch Association, located in Northern California, the other)

The format for the league is round-robin on Saturdays, the results of which are used to determine seeding for Sunday’s single elimination bracket play.

On this Sunday in Santa Fe Springs California, the final four teams left standing by 1:30 PM Sunday were the two finalists, Liberty Fastpitch, and Colton Dirt Bags, along with the Long Beach Black Sox, and San Diego Primetime. The Colton squad, a new team for 2010, upset some highly regarded teams enroute to their second place finish over the weekend. The Dirt Bags have a three man–err – three person pitching staff of Anthony Martinez, Brett Pobantz and Desiree Sorrano
.

(Trying to recall a female pitcher in men’s tournament? Robin Freels, Portland DeMarini Tournament, 2004-2005 comes to mind)

The Dirt Bag team has a nucleus of players from the Colton high school baseball team, also attended by Desiree Sorrano. Sorrano was one of the top pitchers in the Pac-10 win attending Arizona State, and has quickly won they respect of hitters in the SCIFL.

The next big event for the SCIFL will be the “Las Vegas Road Trip III“, April 10-11, 2010, with no less than 27 teams currently entered for that one.

Vin Scully is doing just fine…

Friday, March 19th, 2010

From Inside the Dodgers:

Vin Scully is doing just fine…

A quick update on Vin, as news reports in LA have come out that he was admitted to the hospital this evening.

I just spoke with him a few minutes ago and he said that he simply got out of bed too fast this evening and fell and bumped his head and so for precautionary measures, he was taken to the hospital and will stay overnight for observation. However, he wanted to assure everyone that he’s fine and that he expects to be at Camelback Ranch this weekend for the telecast on Sunday.

As you can imagine, he appreciates everyone’s concern and I can assure you, he sounded just like he always does…

Voice of the Ballpark (radio)

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

VOICE OF THE BALL PARK
from The Tavistock Gazette, Wednesday, March 17, 2010

At any time during the summer Kyle Smith can be found in a ballpark in southwestern Ontario. Whether he’s umpiring, coaching or calling the play-by-play, Kyle seems to spend more time in the park than he does at home.

Going from player to umpire to coach to announcer for Ballparkradio, Kyle has supplied the play-by-play for hundreds of games over the past few years and has become a fan favourite.

Using catch phrases he learned while growing up in Hickson, Ontario, “Kyle brings an exuberance to the job that belies his age,” reads his bio on Ballpark-radio.tv. At 28 years, he is the youngest personality in the radio booth and provides a lot of energy for the entire crew. Kyle is currently going into his fifth season with the broadcasters.

Born in Woodstock, Kyle was raised on the family farm on the 14th Line of East Zorra-Tavistock. A son of Barry and Debbie Smith, the family moved into Hickson in 1989. Kyle has an older brother, Trevor, and a younger sister, Caitlin. Kyle attended Hickson Central Public School and Huron Park Secondary School in Woodstock.

In those early years he played fastball for Hickson Minor Ball teams as pitcher, catcher, and in just about every other position on the diamond. As he got older, his knees started giving him trouble, so he opted for umpiring. He remembers Dave McLaren, Gene McLaren, and Jim Harmer as his mentors at the beginning, however, “It was Darrell Ford who got me involved,” Kyle said. Kyle worked his way through the umpiring ranks and earned jobs at just about every diamond in the area officiating at tournaments and regular South Perth and Tri-County Fastball League games. During this time he also coached the Hickson Bantams to an ORSA Ontario championship title.

Kyle joined the Innerkip Umpires Association and has played his part in hosting the Annual Gord Marshall Memorial Women’s Fastball Tournament. In its seventh year, the umpires partner with the Canadian Cancer Society and have raised more than $40,000 for cancer research. Twenty-four teams from as far away as Windsor, Chepstow and Hamilton sign up for the tournament played in two divisions the weekend of July 22-25. Kyle is sure to be there wearing a different hat and working as an umpire during the event.

A student of the game of fastball, hockey and almost every other sport, Kyle acquired an interest in the work of various radio and television personalities at a young age. Following high school he enrolled in the Radio Broadcasting Program at Mohawk College. He didn’t like the idea of being a disc jockey and sitting alone in a room. He wanted to be out talking with people so play-by-play announcing peaked his interest. He graduated in 2003 with hours of experience through providing the colour commentary at Hamilton Kilty Bees Tier II Jr. A hockey games. Now called the Hamilton Red Wings, Kyle has been calling the play-by-play for the past couple of years each and every Monday night. The program can be found streaming live on the college radio station INDI 101 and online at www.indifm.ca.

With his interest in fastball, Kyle had also been a fan of Ballparkradio when he couldn’t get to the park. In 2006 he was in touch with Joe Todd of Ingersoll, another announcer with Ballparkradio, and Kyle offered them his resumé and services. The following season, Ball-parkradio owner and founder Jim Flanagan contacted Kyle with some dates to call games, but with no promises. Ready to leave after his scheduled broadcasts, Jim asked Kyle to stick around for another game. “I jumped right in,” Kyle remembers. “After that, everything took care of itself.”

Kyle has travelled to Florida to broadcast AAU International Fastpitch tournaments as well as International Softball Congress (ISC) tournaments in Iowa, Wisconsin, Kitchener, and at the International Softball Federation Junior Men’s World Championships in 2008 in Whitehorse, Yukon. This year his play-by-play will be heard throughout the summer at qualifying tournaments culminating with the ISC World Tournament in Midland, Michigan in August.

At college, Kyle was involved in student government on the students’ association and served as a residence advisor where he was named Advisor of the Year.

He earned a college position on a contract basis for one year and developed a presentation for first year students.

Moving back home to Hickson, he found work at Clemmer Steelcraft in Woodstock where he worked until February of 2009. Layoffs found him searching for work and fellow Innerkip umpire Brad Hallock hired him as assistant district sales manager for Pride Seeds. Through his association with Shur-Gain and Dave Bates, Kyle then began as a dairy ruminant representative with crop sales for Yantzi’s Feed and Seed Ltd. in Tavistock. He began working from the office at the new elevator on the Sebastopol Road in November of 2009. With Yantzi’s he is currently enrolled in the Dairy Nutrition Advisor Program at Shur-Gain.

Kyle is a relatively new member of the Hickson Lions Club as well as a longtime member of the Innerkip Umpires’ Association.

While in his first year at Mohawk College, Kyle met Candice Gardner and the couple has been together since May of 2002. She graduated from the Advertising program and is currently an administrative assistant at the Mohawk College Alumni Department in Hamilton.

Ballparkradio has a number of committed broadcasters – Jim Flanagan, Blair Setford, Joe Todd, Lance Winn, and Kyle. There is also an every-growing group of people getting involved in the production, Kyle said. Kyle is looking forward to the new season with a lot of international and local tournaments on the agenda.

“All I need is a laptop, a mixing board, a headset and a reliable internet connection,” Kyle said, to get him up and running. The rest is easy. An advertising script, a player list, and the current statistics, are all he needs. With his experience and excitement for the game, you won’t want to turn the dial.

Otto’s Someone to Know: California A’s Dave Weldin and Silverhawks Chris McGehee

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Bob Otto is on fire:

From “OttoinFocus”

Written by Bob on March 11th, 2010

BAKERSFIELD, CA – The little boy stared wide-eyed through the chain link fence, mesmerized by the risers and drops that rocketed toward home plate. He had never seen anything like it.

That was back in 1983 when the International Softball Congress (ISC) World Tournament came to Bakersfield.

“I remember going with my brother-in-law to see the World Tournament,” says Chris McGehee, who lives in Bakersfield. “I was about seven and saw these pitchers from Australia and New Zealand throwing the ball at what seemed like unhittable speeds.”

That left an impression that McGehee, now 34, never forgot. In the ensuing years, he moved from playing college baseball into the fastpitch game. And he’s risen from ASA Class “C” to the ISC Open / ISC II level.

“From the first time I started playing fastpitch, I have always wanted to play at the highest level that I am able to,” said McGehee.

And McGehee has reached that level. As has his friend, David Weldin.

McGehee plays for the Bakersfield Silverhawks, while Weldin manages the California A’s. Both teams compete at the ISC / ISC II level.

But the two men, along with Robert McCormick of the Silverhawks, have taken their fastpitch pursuits even further.

They’ve joined forces to bring ISC open-level tournament play back to Southern California by hosting the inaugural 2010 California Classic in Santee, June 19-20.

“We plan on making this tournament an annual event,” Weldin said. “If fact, if everything goes according to plan, we would like to expand our tourney to have both upper and lower divisions.”

Weldin started playing fastpitch at age 19. But a brief stint in minor league baseball pulled him away. But in 1990 he returned to the underhanded game for good.

Let’s meet these two men and learn more about them and their fastpitch pursuits.

Dave, you had an unexpected national championship come your way. Tell us about that. “In 2004, I was asked to put a team together to play at the ASA Class C level with some guys who had never played the game. Excluding pitching, there were only three guys on the team with fastpitch experience.

“We qualified for the ASA C nationals in Hastings, Nebraska and somehow won the championship with a group of guys with little or no experience.”

Chris, What’s the fastpitch scene like in Bakersfield? “The game of fastpitch in Bakersfield is pretty much dead. We have no local leagues to play in and we have to travel to play on weekends. The only fastpitch in Bakersfield is our tournament, “The Silverhawk Invitational” that we host in May.”

Chris, what efforts are being made to revive the sport? “We are trying to promote the game and get more young players just out of college, or from slowpitch to come out and give it a try. But that’s a challenge in itself.”

Dave, what motivated you to start the 2010 California Classic? “There are no open-level tournaments in California, and for California teams to compete, they have to travel. Because of today’s economy that is very difficult. So we wanted to put together an open-level tournament that would be fun for the teams and families of these teams.”

Dave, you stepped away after winning the 2008 ISC II “TofC” championship. What brought you back to the game? “I retired to watch my son play baseball. Now my son is very interested in learning how to pitch, so I’m back into the game this year.”

Chris, what do you think needs to be done to grow men’s fastpitch in California? “We need all the associations from northern and southern California to work together instead of trying to monopolize the areas they are in.”

Chris, what can these associations do that would foster cooperation? “Everyone needs to work together to try and schedule tournaments on weekends where they aren’t competing against one another. This will give teams the opportunity to play more weekends… and play in another area’s tournament that fits into their schedule.”

Dave, you played minor league baseball. Does playing fastpitch help or hurt a baseball player? “I think fastpitch helps kids with baseball. Once he plays fastpitch and then goes back to baseball, he will have more time to react to hitting a baseball. And that will make his hitting that much better.”

Chris, what other issues do you see that need to be resolved? “All the different sanctioning bodies – be it NAFA, ASA, ISC – want to control the game and the teams, and I don’t think they want to work together to help the game survive.”

Chris, what is your Silverhawks Invitational tournament doing to foster fastpitch growth in Bakersfield? “We are trying to get the community involved through the media, and with an exhibition game with the Kern County Special Olympics to get people out to the park, and hopefully to watch a game or two of men’s fastpitch.

“We are also looking into conducting a few clinics this year to help promote the game to some younger players.”

ASA Young Men’s National Tournament Recruiting Drive

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Cap tip to Tim Lyon, USA Jr. Men’s Head Coach:

ASA YOUNG MEN’S NATIONAL TOURNAMENT RECRUITING DRIVE

These teams have indicated an interest in coming to Rolla for this summer’s ASA Young Men’s National Fastpitch Softball Tournament (August 4-8, 2010)

They have either committed or are working on it.

This list of teams has been compiled from those teams and coaches that are included on my YOUNG MEN’S FASTPITCH SOFTBALL email list. If you would like to be included….email me at elewis (at) winston.k12.mo.us

Who else do I need to add in which age division?

I am really hoping we will see some Rolla or other area teams added to the younger
age divisions where fast-throwing pitching isn’t such a premium.

Get your son’s baseball team together, pick a couple kids and have them practice a little this summer and come expose them to our great sport. It’s easier to do it when they are 10-12 than waiting until they are in their teens and there are no pitchers around.
