[Fraser Coast/Hervey Bay Australia] – PLENTY of men came out swinging in Maryborough on Sunday and a few of them proved to be a big hit … playing softball.

Hervey Bay’s Jono Thomas was certainly one of them.

The Queensland under 19 representative starred with his bat during the second Maryborough Softball Association men’s Gala Day for the season at Fairfield Park.

Thomas smashed two home runs out of the ball park on the way to helping his Hervey Bay line-up beat Maryborough’s Sparx 18-8 in the final.

While Thomas shone with the bat, his team-mates, Lyam McKay (two) Shaun Mitchell and Brad Mitchell, did likewise in the outfield taking catches.

Billy Connel (two), Alister Brooks and Wal Harvey gloved catches for Sparx.

Seven teams contested the day and Maryborough Softball Association official Wendy Mathiesen said all the players had a ball.

“Not even the rain put a dampener on the day,” she said.

“It was a huge success and we’ve certainly generated a lot of interest.

“We’ll do our best to hold another one in the near future.”

Proposed change of San Francisco fastpitch game night

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Current and former San Francisco fastpitch softball players:

The softball league is proposing to change our Thursday game night at Lang Field to Friday nights. We have had it for 40 years and are down to 4 teams. Playing on a Friday night is obviously more difficult to plan a weekend around…and won’t help us.

Why is it happening? Only two fastpitch games can be played on an evening. They can schedule 3 slow pitch games. Yes, there are over 300 city slowpitch teams…why not just contract their leagues to something more manageable; not ours!

Contact our Softball director with your position on this to help her see our perspective. Joann Dillon 415.831.6316 or email at j4joann (at) aol.com

many thanks,

Championship Games Not Played

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

On Sunday in Orlando, the Italian Athletic Club of California won their semi-final game, but had to leave to catch flights home, and forfeited out of the tournament. This past summer, the Pueblo Bandits and Portland teams forfeited out of the Best of the West tournament, resulting in cancellation of the championship game. It has happened elsewhere, but seems to be happening more often in recent years — perhaps due to the post 9/11 requirements to arrive at airports 2 or 3 hours ahead of flight time and the greater distances required, with fewer tournaments close to home.

What is the solution? Should teams that can’t stay for the championship game stay home? bring more players ? Just how early does a Sunday championship game have to be in order to allow teams to fly home in a post 9/11 world? We would be interested to hear your thoughts on the subject.

You can email us at jim (at) fastpitchwest (dot) com, and indicate if you wish to remain anonymous, and/or whether your comments may be posted here.

Update: Wednesday, January 27, 2010:

We have included some readers comments below (see “Read the Rest of this entry” link below too, and click the “View results” button on polls for additional comments posted there).

Short version of reader’s suggestions from today:

1. Top rated teams should book flights that will allow them to remain through the end of the tournament, including the championship game.

The disappointing conclusion to the 2010 AAU International tournament has generated some discussion on the issue – teams skipping the championship game of tournaments to catch flights home, and what to do about it.
