Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

From Al’s Fastball:

Boy’s Fastpitch-USA

01/26/10
Young Men’s Fastpitch contacts

I am collecting information pertaining to next summer’s ASA Young
Men’s National Softball Tournament at Rolla, Missouri.
It’s scheduled for August 4-8, 2010.

I am not connected with Rolla Parks or ASA…..but if dads and men’s
players don’t start stepping up and getting involved our sport will
be gone as we know it in less than a decade.

Please send me your name, email/phone number, your boy’s fastpitch
team name, and the age groups you plan on playing.
I will share the information with everyone (and Rolla)……this
should help us with recruiting teams.

Please share this email with any friends or interested parties.
I would love to add them to a “Young Men’s Fastpitch” e-mail list I am building

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,
Eric Lewis

Google chrome browser update – version 4.0

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

If you are a user of the Google chrome browser, you’ll want to download the latest update, version 3.6. It represents a major revision, with a number of new features and improvements, including “extensions” (Add-on features and functionality, like the Firefox browser has), and “bookmarks” allowing the synchronization of bookmarks across multiple computers.

To update your Google chrome browser, simply click the “wrench” icon in the upper right-hand corner, then the “About Chrome” selection from the drop-down menu, and the “OK” button to install the latest update.

If you don’t have Google chrome browser, but want to try it out, you can download it for free here.

2010 AAU Predictions Revisited

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Remember the fellow on the Saskatoon forum board who posted his predictions for the AAU tournament? I’ve reprinted his predictions below, with the actual results. Not too shabby, considering there were 40 teams.

From the Sask Jr. D’back board:

He predict the following Elite 8 (5 out of 8.)

correct picks in bold

Team Minnesota
Dominicana US
NY Gremlins

Sureno Soy VZ
Chicago/NY
Los Socios
IAC

Millwood Logistics

Actual:
Chicago/NY
Puerto Rico National Team
Italian Athletic Club
Dominicana USA
Gremlins
Hill United
Dominican Republic
Team Minnesota

Two of the three picks that he missed on did well – making it to the Sweet Sixteen, Sureno Soy and Milwood. Sureno, with Adam Folkard was eliminated 1-0 Saturday by Team Minnesota, on a Frank Cox 1-hitter, while Milwood was eliminated by champion Chicago/New York. Only Los Socios finished out of the money, going 1-1 in round robin and falling in their first playoff game to Dominicana. Not the two-time AAU champion Los Socios team that fans are accustomed to seeing at the AAU.

His Final Four picks:
(2 out of 40)

Sureno Soy
NY Gremlins
Chicago/NY

Team Minnesota

Actual:
NY Gremlins
Chicago/NY
IAC
Dominican Republic

The IAC squad was picked by many as a “contender”, but I’m not sure how many had them pegged for a 7-0 finish and a ticket to the championship game. Their roster was small (11 players), but well balanced with great pitching (Witten and Mayson), great defense (Waverick, Fehrman and Tan up the middle), and plenty of hitting (Mayson, Turner and Waverick had good weekends at the plate). Witten was stellar in their biggest game of the weekend, a 6-0 shutout of the defending champs, Chicago/New York, and Chase Turner came up with a game saving catch. Nearly half their roster had world championship credentials. Someone noted that their 7-0 weekend netted IAC only a bronze, but that, regretably, was an anomaly of their own creation. Call it a silver if you wish, they had an amazing weekend, though I suspect skipper Bob Piddock and his team would trade either to play the game, and will always wonder what might have been…

No one really knew what to expect of the Dominican Republic squad, which proved to be formidable, if not disagreeable. They beat Gervesutti, Goss and Newton in the same weekend, no easy feat. Could they have beaten IAC or Chicago/New York in the championship game? Unfortunately, that’s one we’ll never know. Then again, did Witten or Mayson have enough left in the tank to beat the Dominican, after pitching seven games between them? Again, we’ll never know. ..

Sureno Soy was eliminated by one of his other picks, Team Minnesota, which still finished in the Elite Eight, falling to runner-up Dominican Republic.

And his pick for the finals (1 out of 2, sort of, anyway)

NY Gremlins vs. Chicago/NY in the final

But for the Dominican Republic’s come-from-behind home run in the 6th inning of their semi-final, (or prevailing on the protest of the home run), the NY Gremlins would have been in the final.

You made better predictions, you say? Ah, but you didn’t post them before the tournament !

Chicago NY is 2010 AAU Int’l Champion

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

The 2010 AAU international tournament ended on an inauspicious note with the Italian Athletic Club of California forfeiting the championship game, with a number of players having to leave to catch flights home before the championship game commenced.

In the first semi final game, the Italian Athletic Club of Stockton California defeated the Chicago New York team 6-0, on the strength of Derek Mason’s five RBIs including two home runs, (one a grand slam), and a four hit shutout tossed by Sean Witten.

In the other semi final game, the Dominican Republic national team defeated the NY gremlins, by a 5-4 score. The Dominican Republic scored one run in the first inning, and two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead, into the fourth inning. The New York Gremlins rallied back with four runs in the fourth inning, to take a 4-3 lead. The Dominican Republic then took the lead back – for good — on a two run homer in the 6th, for the 5-4 final score. A bit of controversy erupted on the home run, with the gremlins arguing that the home run hitter made contact with his teammates before he reached first base (his teammates rushing from the dugout when the homer was hit) The umpire’s ruling was that the home run stood. When the Gremlins failed to score in the top of the seventh inning, the Dominican Republic advanced to the championship game. (or so it appeared)

Then things really went south. The Italian Athletic Club of California, which was to play the Dominican Republic for the 2010 AAU title, announced that they could not stay, due to players having to catch flights home. After a meeting amongst the tournament directors, the title game was directed to go forward between Chicago New York and the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic team that refused to play, however, and a forfeit was declared, with Chicago New York emerging as the 2010 AAU International tournament champions.

Jeff Ellsworth of Chicago New York was named to the tournament’s most valuable player, while pitcher Shaun Winship earned most valuable pitcher honors.

The AAU international tournament will return in 2011 for its 12th consecutive year.

So long from Orlando.
