Midland to host ISC World Tournament

More than $2 million of potential revenue pouring into the local economy.

Up to 80 men’s fastpitch softball teams staying in the Midland area for the course of a week, and up to 20,000 spectators visiting the city over that time.

Twenty nine jobs to be created locally.

It all adds up to one big economic ray of sunshine headed this way in August of 2010, when the Midland Explorers Booster Club is set to host the International Softball Congress World Tournament and two other concurrent tournaments at Emerson Park and Redcoats Fields.

While the contract is not yet signed, organizing committee co-chairman Kyle Beane said no other city has put in a bid for the tournament, and it’s just a matter of working out contract details with ISC officials.

“There is a mutual agreement between the Explorers Booster Club and the ISC that Midland will be the host in 2010,” said Beane, who also plays for the Midland Explorers men’s fastpitch team. “We’ve got contract details to work out that will be taken care of in the next couple of weeks.”

The ISC World Tournament will feature either 24 or 32 of the best men’s fastpitch teams from around the world. The concurrent ISC II Tournament of Champions will have about 40 fastpitch teams that are just a notch below those in the World Tournament; and the 19-and-under ISC Youth Tournament will draw eight to 12 youth teams from around the world.

Fans will come in large numbers from Ontario, Beane predicted.

“We think a lot of fans are going to come from Ontario, which is still a hotbed for fastpitch,” he said.

Beane is thrilled at the prospect of having the event in Midland, which last hosted a world fastpitch tournament in 1984 and 1996.

“It’s a great feeling, because it’s something that a lot of people have wanted to see,” he said. “We know what kind of venue we’ve got, one of the best in the country. I think a lot of people are going to be really excited that this tournament is finally going to come to Midland.”

The tentative dates for the tournaments are Aug. 14-21, 2010, Beane said. The 2009 tournament is in Quad Cities.

Beane said that after researching and consulting with Jim Peckrul of the Midland County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the organizing committee came up with a figure of $2.35 million as the economic impact of the tournaments.

Beane’s fellow committee co-chairman Dave Lach said the committee determined that the visitors and convention bureau would receive about $9,000 from the 2 percent local tax on lodging during the tournament.

A portion of any profit generated from the tournament will go to the Explorers Booster Club, but most of the profit will go to local teams, leagues, parks and other worthwhile groups as determined by the committee, Lach said.

Beane said the committee of about 25 members also includes softball notables Marty McGuire, Laura Currie, Pete Finn, Jeff Servinski, Gregg Sauve and Jack Starling, among others.

Lach said about 100 more volunteers will be needed to plan and run the tournament.

Lach said the committee is setting out to raise about $25,000 to meet expenses for the tournament, which include paying the city for the use of the fields.

Beane said the committee has already done a lot of planning over the past few months.

“We’ve got logos designed, we’re working on a website. A lot of work is already done; now it’s just time to start executing the plan,” Beane said.

Lach expects that the cost of admission to tournament games will be about $8 per fan per day, and about $20 per fan for the entire tournament.

He said that spectators will also receive coupons for area businesses with their admission tickets.

Flip(ping) out

A number of readers have written to us, asking about the little Flip video camera that we used to shoot the YouTube clip of Rob O’Brien’s home run. Thought we’d let you know we spotted a sale at Amazon, for the 30 minute non-HD Flip camera. It’s not the high definition version that we used, but can’t beat the price. Softball says no to joint 2016 bid with baseball

By FREDERIC J. FROMMER, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Softball chose to go its own way for the Olympics, rejecting a proposal from baseball for a joint bid to get reinstated for the 2016 Summer Games.

The president of the International Softball Federation, Don Porter, made the announcement Friday.

“We have offered the IOC a doping-free, universal team sport that reflects the values of Olympism all over the world,” Porter said in a statement.

Porter met Thursday with Harvey Schiller, the president of the International Baseball Federation in Orlando, Fla. Schiller said he would move forward with baseball’s bid to get back to the Olympics.

The IOC voted to drop baseball and softball in 2005, and softball officials have said their sport was hurt by baseball’s doping scandals. Since softball was added to the Olympics in 1996, the U.S. won three straight golds before losing to Japan in Beijing.

The two sports are among seven competing for two openings for new sports at the 2016 Olympics. Baseball officials had argued that a combined bid would enhance the chances of both sports. The IOC will vote in October on which sports to add.

Porter said although softball’s bid is for a women’s sport, his group has offered the IOC an option of adding men’s softball. In a telephone interview, Porter said he thought combining with baseball would hurt that effort.

“We’re an independent sport, and we want to continue that way,” Porter said. “This is no disrespect in any way to baseball. Baseball’s a great sport.”

Editor’s Note: At the risk of hyperbole, this story might be the biggest news in the world of men’s fastpitch in the past couple decades. The proposal by Porter and the ISF has the potential to put men’s fastpitch onto the world stage, where many players and fans have said it belongs, and give it parity in worldwide competition. For many years, the argument against allowing men’s fastpitch softball the honor of Olympic competition along with women has been “well, the men have baseball”.

This decision by Mr. Porter and the ISF is clearly a move in a different direction, signaling an effort to give the sport of fastpitch softball it’s own identity, and one that stands on its own two feet, on a foundation of support for men’s and women’s fastpitch.

The ISF’s move — one we obviously support — has huge implications for the sport of men’s fastpitch. We urge our readers to voice their support of the decision, and decision to push for Olympic competition in men and women’s fastpitch softball.

I guess you could say that Porter and the ISF has provided a dramatic answer to the question posed here last weekend “Why aren’t mens sports groups lobbying for Men’s Softball at the Olympics?”

In pursuit of the perfect game

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Hat tip, Bob Henning

Click here to view PDF file with color photo of Tonya Ribalkin and her father, John, also a high-level umpire.

From the North Shore Outlook, British Columbia:
Sam Cooper, Staff Reporter

North Shore native Tonya Ribalkin, 31, is the youngest umpire ever to become certified by the International Softball Federation, making her a good bet to officiate the Olympics, if softball is someday reinstated after taking a curtain call in Beijing last summer. But surging to the top of her field, as a rare female in the world of umpiring no less, is not really her prime motivation. “I’ve never worked a perfect game,” Ribalkin, a Grade 8 teacher in Coquitlam, says in an interview. “The day I do I walk off the ball diamond for good.” Ribalkin was urged to give umping a try in 1991, aged 13, by her father John Ribalkin, also a high-level ump. She was grounded at the time, so she figured she had not much to lose. “I thought it was a good way to get out of the house,” she recalls, with a laugh. Umps catch ample abuse, and even as a young teen, Ribalkin was not spared. In fact she didn’t really find her groove until ’94, sometimes pleading with her father to miss games. But he pushed her to fulfill her obligations, and Ribalkin eventually developed the chops needed to quickly rise up the umping ranks, achieving her Level V certification in 2005 and winning certification with the ISF in 2008.
