Taylor Farms Lumberkings Announce 2008 Schedule

Thursday, November 15th, 2007

The Taylor Farms LumberKings are pleased to announce their schedule for the 2008 season. Last year the upstart ISCII team finished runner up to a powerful TNT team. This season the team has merged with third place finisher A1-Taylor Farms. Much like last season the team will play an ISC schedule early on to gain the much needed experience needed to compete for the ISCII crown in August. With so many of the team members from California they were able to add a few local tournaments this year. The team is much exited about the following schedule:

April 18-19 Central Cal Travel League Taft, CA
May 3-4 Red Rock St. George, UT
May 24-25 Central Cal Travel League Fresno, CA
June 5-8 Snapper Shootout Niagara-on-the-lake, Ontario
June 21-22 Rose Cup Portland, OR
July 11-13 Boys of Summer Denmark, WI
July 25-27 Vancouver Challenge Vancouver, B.C.
August 10-13 ISCII ToC Appleton, WI

Editor’s notes: Mac’s Sprayers…aka last year’s Mac’s Mauraders – the 2007 AAU Champions. Last year’s MVP, Frankie Perez, who provided the most dramatic moment in AAU history with his championship game – extra inning – walk off home run, is back with Macs, but the pitching staff is completely revamped. Last year it was MVPitcher Colin McKenzie and Rob Schweyer, with Schweyer pitching well enough to be co-MVPitcher. But both are gone from Mac’s roster and we see this impressive list, of Jeremy Manley, Robbie O’Brien, BJ Hunhoff, and Sebastian Gervasutti. Just yesterday, we were talking about the five deep staff of the Texaco Pirates. Those bullpens are going to be crowded in Orlando, or maybe the teams will take turns sending the extras to Disneyworld for a day? Nine pitchers between these two teams. Some would say there aren’t enough innings to go around, but remember this is January, so many managers are reluctant to overwork guys that haven’t been pitching on a regular basis. It’s a 32 team, four day tournament, and fatigue does take a toll come Sunday. Even in last year’s championship game, both Mac’s and Broken Bow went through their entire pitching staffs before it was over. I guess if the Boston Red Sox can go to a six man rotation, as some say they will, then nothing wrong with being 4-5 deep in Orlando. Unless, of course, you’re an AAU manager of a team that is still hunting for pitching.

Trivia time: How many players from last year’s AAU Championship team are back in 2008? Answer after the jump. (Looking for the answer to yesterday’s trivia question about the “Four Aces” on Penn Corp? see Texaco Pirates roster post below)

Editor’s notes: Five pitchers! Will any team in Orlando have a pitching staff this deep? I remember when Penn Corp has four of the top pitchers around, they used to refer to them as the “Four Aces”. Trivia bonus points – can anyone name those four pitchers from Penn Corp? (see answer after the jump)

Keep an eye out for the next issue of Softball Magazine, which has a feature story on the team from the Bahamas, “The Real Pirates of the Caribbean”. The team has come a long way since winning the consolation bracket in 2004, finishing third in last year’s event, falling to Broken Bow in the semi-finals.

Vancouver Grey Sox Sign Ree, Rassmussen

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

(Brian Ree)

Vancouver, BC

The Vancouver Grey Sox are pleased to announce the signings of infielder Brian Ree and catcher -outfielder Kevin Rasmussen for the 2008 season.

Both Ree and Rasmussen were members of the 2007 edition of the Portland, Oregon DeMarini Merchants. Ree a resident of Gresham, Oregon and Rasmussen a resident of Everett, Washington are expected to provide open level experience and depth to the Grey Sox line up as we attempt to improve upon our recent result at the ISC World Tournament.

Further updates regarding our roster and 2008 schedule will be provided in the weeks ahead.

Editor’s note: With Vancouver signing three of Portland’s top players from 2007, Mike Piechnik, Brian Ree and Kevin Rasmussen, rumors are swirling that this spells the demise of the Portland team. Not so, however, says a very reliable source, who tells fastpitchwest that Portland will be adding personnel to replace those departing players and plans to be on the field for the 2008 season.

Wagar, Jackson Sign with Cents

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

From

St. Thomas Centennials Roster additions

The St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials are very pleased to announce the additions of pitchers Scott Wagar and Andy Jackson.

Wags is a workhorse who relishes the oppourtunity for a fresh start. He will be counted on to be a “go to guy’ for the Cents. The team is hoping he can add something to offensive side as well with his bat.

AJ is a veteran who has proven he can beat anyone at any given time. He will give us leadership on the field and help some of the young guys adjust to the open level. Andy is a very capable hitter and can play the outfield as well as 1st base. We welcome Andy back for his third stint in the St. Thomas area. He played with some of the Fingal teams in the ’90s and helped the Union Storm win the ’04 OASA Eliminations.

For more on this story, including other player signings by the Cents, see Al’s Fastball.
