Great Britain Maccabiah Fastpitch team looking for a pitcher

Friday, October 12th, 2007

We received the following note from Hillel Horwitz in the UK, looking for a pitcher for the Maccabiah Games for the Summer of 2009:

The Great Britain Maccabiah Fastpitch softball team needs a pitcher. As you may know, GB is not a hotbed of fastpitch pitchers, let alone Jewish ones. Every Maccabiah we have the same problem of probably having enough players for a GB team, but not having a pitcher. So, we are searching…..

The Maccabiah Games is the Jewish equivalent of the Olympics, held every 4 years in Israel, with the next one in summer 2009. It is an amazing experience. Opening ceremony in a packed 40,000 seater stadium, very well organised, and great fun.

We are looking for someone:

· That can pitch half decently! We don’t require a semi pro or anything, just someone competent that can chuck the ball reasonably accurately, at reasonable speed.

· Not already recruited by the US Maccabiah team

· Jewish, or have at least one parent or grandparent that is Jewish

· They need to be able to take off around 2 weeks in the summer of 2009 to come to Israel to play

· Doesn’t mind playing with the GB team

· Intending to spend some time in the UK would be a real bonus, but if we can’t find a pitcher here (unlikely), we intend seeking dispensation for a pitcher based abroad.

Team ceasing operations, can’t find a major sponsor

By Darryl G. Smart
Sports Editor

INNERKIP — The glass slipper the Innerkip Eagles wore during the International Softball Congress world tournament this summer has been smashed to pieces. “It is with great disappointment that I announce that the Innerkip Eagles are ceasing operations for the upcoming 2008 fastball season,” manager Jeff Whetstone said in a press release. “Due to the inability to secure a sponsor, we will be unable to operate.” Whetstone said for the team to survive another season, it needed $20,000. Despite that, the writing was on the wall.
“We could have waited until Christmas to make a decision, but it wouldn’t be fair to the players,” Whetstone said. “But we all knew that this would happen eventually.”

This end comes on the heels of the team’s best season, which included an eighth-place finish at the ISC world tournament in Kitchener. “Finishing eighth at this year’s ISC tournament was one of our team’s highlights,” Whetstone said. The Eagles began their journey in 2000, winning the South Perth Men’s Fastball League, the Ontario Amateur Softball Association eliminations, the North American Fastball Association ‘AA’ and eastern Canadian championships.

“We won everything possible so the guys wanted to try it,” Whetstone said. So the Eagles’ next obvious step was to senior. For seven years, the Eagles gradually began to make a name for
themselves on the world stage, moving up the world ladder. In league play, the Eagles captured the 2005 title and lost to the Jarvis Merchants in the season’s final.

“The Eagles have been a mainstay in keeping the ISC Travel League alive and it is the unsung effort of the Jeff Whetstones in the game that sadly gets lost when a team can no longer operate,” ISC Hall of Famer Larry Lynch said. “Take pride in the fact that you have given
a lot of players the opportunity to play at the highest level and continue at the highest level. Teams across North America have bolstered their own by recruiting from small- town Innerkip.” And that’s exactly what is starting to happen.

While catcher Pat Humphries recently signed with the current world champion Farm Tavern, the rest of the Eagles will try to latch on with another senior team. Unfortunately, the numbers game may play a factor, thanks to a merger between the Kitchener Hallman Twins and Orillia Riversharks. As part of the merger, it was agreed the new team will consist of players from both squads, meaning a full team’s worth of players will be looking for a place to play.
Despite the Eagles folding, Whetstone said there were no regrets. “If you see where we started, not many people heard of Innerkip,” Whetstone said. “Now they know most of our guys.”

Editor’s note: To date, Circle Tap is the biggest beneficiary of the Kitchener/Orillia merger. Four of the six come over from the Orillia Riversharks, following their merger for 2008 with the Kitchener Hallman Twins — Miljavic, Wenstrom, Brand and Ormsby. Ellestad was on the CT roster for last year’s ISC World. Garvey’s name does not appear on the preliminary rosters submitted for the 2007 WT, but has been a Tapper in the past. Garvey is among the best American players in the game, retired after the 2006 season, but will be back after a year layoff.

Last year’s Boys of Summer tournament
came down to The Farm of Madison, Wisconsin vs. the So Cal Bombers — the same two teams that would square off a month later in the ISC World Tournament championship game.

Midland Back in 2008

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

From

Midland, MI

The Midland Explorers are pleased to announce that pitcher Brian Urquhart will be joining the team for the 2008 season. pitching last year with Jarvis, and previously with Heflin and Fedlock, Brian has established himself as one of the top up and coming pitchers on the ISC circuit.

At this time, all starting position players have confirmed their return to the team, as have pitchers Grant Patterson and Mike
Joseph. Also, Scott Stasik has joined the team in a General Manager capacity as he will be helping manager Clint Beane and coach Del Benson in player recruitment and scheduling. Scott helped run the Frankenmuth team that made appearances at the ISC from ’02 to ’05.

Finally, outfielder Dave Frick has decided to retire from the Explorers. Patrolling centerfield since 2001, Dave has been one of the most underrated defensive center fielders in the game. The entire team wishes him the best on his post-Explorer career.

So Cal Bombers Head to Mexicali for Copa Dum

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Designated Hitter par excellence Charlie Pena will be with the So Cal Bombers this weekend in Mexicali, Mexico for the COPA DUM tournament. Charlie is shown above as a member of the Baytown Hawks, picking up the hardware at this year’s Latin tournament in Texas where he was named Most Valuable Player.

Reports have it that Rob Schweyer (currently on the cover of fastpitchwest.com) will pitch for the Bombers, along with Sean Whitten, while Sebastian Gervasutti and Jeremy Manley will land in San Diego today and head south east to Mexicali to suit up for a rival team. Sonny Perkins is also reported to be headed to the tournament, though no word yet on who he will be pitching/playing for. A tournament slated for the Dominican Republic was pushed back to a later date, to enable players to attend both events.

We hope to receive reports on this one and will update readers as information becomes available.

Mexicali, Mexico, is just across the US border from Calexico, about 2 hours east and a bit south of San Diego, as shown in the map below. (The Team USA Olympic Training Facility West is located in Chula Vista, just south of San Diego and also shown on map)

A-1 Bombers?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

The rumor mill is churning again. The latest, from a reliable source:

A1 BOMBERS—-MORE TO COME IN THE NEXT FEW DAYS.

Others note the absence of the Hunt brothers, Chris and Tim, from the recently released Taylor Farms Lumberking roster and speculate about what that means.

Taylor Farms Lumberkings Unveil 2008 Roster

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

See update below, added September 26, 2007

The California LumberKings and Taylor Farms have joined forces for the upcoming ISCII season. LumberKings Manager, Dave Weldin and Taylor Skipper, Ron Guzman has concluded talks that were started some years ago.

To continue to play at the ISC-ISCII level, we felt it was in the best interest for both the California LumberKings and Taylor Farms to combine. Without this fusion of the two teams it was doubtful that either team would be able to compete at this level.

The LumberKings looked hard into competing at the ISC level and fell short of the funding goal needed to compete. In addition to finances, both teams are losing players from their 2007 rosters for a variety of reasons.

The newly formed Taylor Farms LumberKings have finalized their roster for the upcoming 2008 season. The roster will consist of one of the top pitching staffs at the ISCII level. In addition to pitching we feel that our offense and defense has improved from the 2007. All of the players on this year’s roster come from two of the top three teams from last years ToC. Again, we would like to thank all of our players that played with us the past few seasons. Each and every one made our team a success!

Here is the 2008 roster for the Taylor Farms LumberKings:

P-Mike Egerdeen
P-Darren Strang
P-Dave Drotzman
C-Jeff Twist
INF-Eddie Martin

Its popularity waning in recent decades, fastpitch softball teams like Dolan and Murphy use recruitment of international players to keep the sport alive in United States

September 23, 2007
BY JOHN SAHLY Staff Writer

Jonas Mach, a 23-year-old softball player who throws a fastball hitters have less than four-tenths of a second to react to, lives in a pink room.

Not just pink; suffocating pink. Pink tulips in untouched parts of nature aren’t this pink.

To top it off, the light-switch cover includes a pastel-colored bunny painted on it, matching the banner that crawls across the room.

For the Czech Republic-native Mach, this pink room is not home. Neither is the more spacious but just as messy room where his Argentinean teammate Juan Potolicchio spends his time.

Both young men are international fastpitch softball pitchers who play for Aurora’s Dolan and Murphy team. They are part of a large contingent of foreign players who, for various reasons, come to the United States and Canada to play softball in the summer.

Mach’s room — cluttered with clothes, softball equipment and a single mattress — can’t fit more than a handful of people comfortably. The bedroom once belonged to a young girl. For Mach, it’s a place to sleep and a place to hang out with Potolicchio and teammate Jason Iuli — who all live together in the Aurora house during their summers in the U.S.

“At first, when I walked in and I saw the pink walls I thought it was a joke,” Mach said.

But the fastpitch community knows Mach’s fastball and Potolicchio’s riser are no laughing matter.

The two are a major part of the sport’s biggest trend. Two pitchers in a pitchers’ game; two international players in an increasingly-international game; two young competitors in a game desperate to get younger.

Two players who represent how fast-pitch softball — a sport few in the public know about and even fewer pay attention to — not only survives, but thrives in its own small way.

LB Deadwood Wins 2 at NAFA 50+ Masters

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

The Long Beach Deadwood team won both of their games Saturday, a study in contrasts. The ‘Wood scratched out one run and made it stand up in a 1-0 win over Hellman Motors of Colorado, than won a slugfest, 15-11 against Nevada Power of Reno, CA, to finish 2-0 on the day, win their pool, and capture a first round bye Sunday. The squad will play a 1:15pm semi-final game in the single elimination bracket Sunday, against the winner of the 9:45am quarterfinal between Seattle Fastpitch, WA and Hellman Motors of Colorado.

Paul Castillo provided the offense for Deadwood in the first game, reaching on a base hit, stealing second and coming around to score the game’s lone run. Dan Zupp went the distance, pitching a 5 hit shutout for the win. Castillo also made a game-saving catch for the final out of the game, spearing a liner down the right field line, with a runner aboard.

In their second game, Deadwood staked starter Joe Salcido to a 10-2 lead, but Nevada Reno joined the slugfest, scoring 5 to cut the lead to 10-7. Dan Zupp came on in relief in the fourth inning, and nailed down the win, despite Nevada Reno’s continued scoring. Dan Regas was four for five, including a two out, bases loaded double. Regas had a triple, double and two singles, while Bernie Lopez, a Las Vegas addition to the club, had three RBI. Everyone for the ‘Wood got into the act, with everyone in the lineup getting at least one hit. Dean Bettencourt and Paul Castillo scored three runs each, from the leadoff and nine-spot, respectively. Bettencourt was 3 for 5 in the game.

Long Beach Deadwood Heads to Carson City, NV for NAFA 50+

Friday, September 14th, 2007

Long Beach Deadwood will open up the NAFA 50+ Masters at Carson City with a 9:45am game Saturday morning against Hellman Motors of Colorado. Their second game is 1:15pm PST, with the two Saturday games determining their seeding for Sunday’s single elimination bracket.

The Deadwood Roster:

1. Dean Bettencourt
2. Paul Castillo
3. Joe Crawford
4. Jim Flanagan
5. Bernie Lopez
6. Mike Encinas
7. Steve Miner
8. Dan Regas
9. Alan Rohrback
10. Joe Salcido
11. Barry Woolery
12. Dan Zupp
13. Dale Zeller
14. Len McIver

Alan Rohrback is a three-time winner of First Team All World honors at the ISC World Tournament, earning the awards in 1981, as a member of the champion Camarillo Kings, hitting .375 in, again in 1983 as a member of the champion Lancaster Chameleons, hitting .409, and finally, in 1986 as a member of the runner-up Lakewood Chameleons. Rohrbach also earned several All American honors at the ASA Major tournament. Rohrback was one of the game’s premier hitters during the 1980’s. In his first year of 50+ play, he picked up where he left off, winning the batting title at the ASA 50+ at Prescott, Arizona.

Regas and Miner both played in the Western Softball Congress for a number of years, during the Long Beach Nitehawks era. Miner was a member of the 1979 Nitehawk team that finished 2nd in the ISC World that year, at Bakersfield.

Steve Miner, Danny Regas, Dean Bettencourt and the editor were members of the 1991 Vista Bombers, runners-up in the 67 team ASA “A” Nationals that year, a tournament won by the Boulder Springers. Rumor has it that some members of that 1991 Boulder team are on the Hellman Motors team, Deadwood’s first round opponent in this year’s tournament.

Miner will reprise his role as player-manager of this year’s squad, as he was in 2005, and on the 1991 Vista Bombers. This weekend marks the first time Regas and Flanagan have shared a dugout since that 1991 final. Miner has a long history in the game, and was recently signed as an assistant coach of the San Diego Aztecs women’s fastpitch team, sharing space, so-to-speak with the great Tony Gwynn, who heads up the men’s baseball team. Miner had a remarkable .710 winning percentage in 20 years of head coaching experience in San Diego high schools. The SDSU website notes:

At the national level, Miner was a four-time All-American (1979, 1988-90), a seven-time Western Softball Congress all-league selection (1975-81) and the 1975 AAA San Diego Player of the Year. In addition, he set the WSC batting average record in 1979 and batted a national tournament record .793 in 1988. Miner may be best known in the softball world as the first player to try the crossover slap-hitting at the men’s national fast-pitch level, a technique that is widely used in the women’s game today.

Bettencourt set a record at that 1991 ASA “A” National, with 20 hits from the leadoff spot. Bettencourt, Woolery and the editor were teammates on the Vista Rangers at the 1989 ISC World Tournament in Kimberly, WI.

Time flies, eh?

Update Friday night: Rohrback tore a calf muscle yesterday at his son’s soccer practice and will not be able to play Deadwood.
