A-1 Tank

Editor’s Notes: Another new ISC II team on the radar for 2006, A-1 Tank, out of Northern California. A-1 has been a top ASA “B” and “C” team in recent years, and will join the California Lumberkings at the ISC II level in 2006, as well as competing in some of the top open tournaments on the West Coast. Bob Piddock works things behind the scenes, while Chris Wright (formerly of Team Rainey and the Nor Cal Mavericks) will be the on-field skipper. Plenty of pop in Wright’s bat still, so we expect to see him in the lineup as well.

Young up-and-coming stars and Team USA alternates Gerald Pyle and Craig Daniels will be among A-1’s players. Pyle brings size, power and lots of raw talent to the mound and batter’s box, while Daniels is just home from Orlando, FL where he played on the AAU Championship squad, Team USA. Pitchers Ed Gasper and Dave Dodson were teammates in 2002 when Black Oak Casino won the NAFA “A” in Salem, while Keith Frey pitched for a number of years with the Sharks of Northern Cal, including an ASA “A” runner up finish in 2003.

Oh, and then there are “those pants”. If you haven’t seen ’em, stay tuned. Can you picture the big fella wearing those stripes? 😉

Savala Rounders Announce 2006 Roster

Friday, February 10th, 2006

Fastpitchwest Forum – Savala Rounders

2006 Savala Rounders Roster

Brett Baker,Matt Barnes, Ken Crawford, Lanell Culver, Lou Enriquez, Erik Geierman, Carlos Gonzalez, Mike Hemperly, Donald Jewett, Scott Leckers, Mitch Mendenhall, Tom Morton, John Simmers, Russ Snow, Mike Thomas, Marc Villalobos, Cary Weiler, and Don Younger.

Editor’s notes: Longtime Rounder manager Ron Kirby has retired, but Mitch Mendenhall will help continue the Rounder tradition. Mitch is the lone member of last year’s pitching staff to return, but will be joined by a trio of talented arms. Al Savala, one of the game’s generous benefactors, has come aboard as the team’s sponsor.

Big-time pitching additions of Cary Weiler, Russ Snow and Matt Barnes will enable the new-look Rounders to compete at the next level, as one of six teams to be bumped up in classification by the ASA. All three have thrown open ball, and know how to win. Veteran catchers Don Younger and Mike Hemperly will provide the team with a solid battery and leadership, while Michael “Spanky” Thomas will anchor the infield defense as the team’s onfield general, along with Mark Villalobos, giving the squad a Rodriguez-Jeter-type combo on the left side of the infield. All Americans Eric Geierman and Tom Morton return, as does impact player Linnell Culver and solid stick John Simers. Gerald Pyle has moved over to A-1 Tank, but the team (still) has tremendous power with Morton and Culver in the middle of the order. The longest running member of the team, Donald Jewett, whose versatile talents have been a key to the team’s success, is healthy again and back with the team. Leckers, Baker, Barnes, Crawford, Enriquez, Gonzales add some new faces and talent to the team, which will compete in the So Cal ASA A/B league, as well as a number of tournaments, including Pantera’s Valentine’s, Red Rock, Best of the West, and the ASA “B” Nationals in September.

IS Knights Sign Scooter Lange and Sisko Sabate

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

From Al’s Fastball:
IS Knights Sign Scooter Lange and Sisko Sabate

Fargo, North Dakota

The IS Knights of Fargo, North Dakota would like two announce their second group of singings for the 2006 season with the additions of Scott “Scooter” Lange and Sisko Sabate.

Lange, of Lombard, Illinois, joins IS after spending last season with Heflin St. Louis and the Quad City Sox of Davenport, Iowa prior to that. Last year Lange earned First Team All American Honors at the ASA Major National Championship while playing with Runner-Up Florida Fastpitch. Lange, along with Lamar Noriega, will handle the catching duties for the IS Knights.

Sabate, of Parana, Argentina, will join Rob Schweyer on the IS Knights pitching staff. Sabate spent 2005 playing with Albaugh, Inc. of Elkhart, Iowa, while also representing Don Bosco during his time in Argentina. He earned Second Team All World honors last August at the NAFA Class AAA/Open World Series while playing with Briggs/Tanner of Omaha, Nebraska. IS Knights Sign Roman Foore and Zach Goring

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

From Al’s Fastball:

IS Knights Sign Roman Foore and Zach Goring
Fargo, North Dakota

The IS Knights of Fargo, North Dakota would like to announce the first of their new player signings for the 2006 season as we welcome Roman Foore and Zach Goring to the team. Both players will make the jump to ISC-level fastpitch after very successful careers at the ISC II/NAFA AA level the last several years.

Foore, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, has played the last five years with Pate Bonding, Inc. (PBI) of West St. Paul, Minnesota. Last August he was named the MVP of the Minnesota ASA Class B State Tournament while helping PBI claim that crown. Later that month he was named Second Team All World at the NAFA Class AA World Series. Foore will be looked upon to add some pop in the middle of the Knights lineup while seeing time at first base and designated hitter.

Goring, of Burnsville, Minnesota, makes the move to the IS Knights after playing the last several years with ASB-Villard of St. Paul, Minnesota.

Editor’s note:
We had the chance to see Foore and Goring in Orlando, as members of this year’s AAU International Tournament runner-up, Team Minnesota. Foore has tremendous power, hitting a 300+ foot home run in the quarterfinals to help his team into the Final Four, and Goring is a young talent, just coming into his prime. Look for both of these players to do well a at the next level. (Foore’s AAU homer was broadcast on Ballparkradio and is available in the Archives)

Long Beach Nitehawks Named to Top 50 Sports Moments

Monday, February 6th, 2006

From the Press-Telegram Newspaper, Long Beach California:

LB Nitehawks # 14 on Press-Telegram’s 50 Greatest Moments in Long Beach Sports History

ISC Hall of Famer and LB Nitehawk Great Nick Hopkins Was Honored by the Long Beach Century Club this week. (File Photo by Press-Telegram)

Before there was Sean Burroughs and the Little League heroes, before the Dirtbags were born, before Lisa Fernandez, before Tony Gwynn, before Sean’s dad Jeff, before Joe Hicks, before Blair Field, before all those CIF champs and stars, even before Bob Lemon became a star, there were the Long Beach Nitehawks.

Born in 1933, relocated to Long Beach in 1939. Winners of 10 International Softball Congress world championships. Twenty-three Hall of Famers. That is not a misprint.

The franchise folded in 1988 and scarcely anyone but the old-timers in town noticed because men’s professional fast-pitch softball had lost whatever modest appeal it once held for the masses. On the sports menu, it went from entree to appetizer to fast-dissolving after-dinner mint.

But in its own time, the Nitehawks were a source of pride and success in town. The ball-and-bat lineage of Lemon and Vern Stephens can be traced to the Nitehawks, and former Cubs and PCL star Lou Novikoff had an entire second act on the field with the Nitehawks.

Nick Hopkins was one of the finest-fielding shortstops in pro softball history, and the Wilson product and one-time Boston Red Sox prospect played 19 seasons for the Nitehawks. Saturday night, he’ll be inducted into the Century Club Hall of Fame, joining two other Nitehawk legends, team founder Joe Rodgers and former player, manager and owner Red Meairs.

Amid all of Long Beach’s rich baseball history, the Nitehawks also earned a lofty spot on the Century Club’s 50 Greatest Sports Moments List that was compiled in honor of the club’s 50th anniversary.

Black Bears beef up (for 2006 Canadians)
Article as posted in The Prince George Citizen

Black Bears Beef Up
by TED CLARKE, Citizen staff

“It appears the Prince George Black Bears have added some teeth and a few claws to their fastball den. The hosts of the 2006 Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship have secured the services national team pitcher Korrey Gareau for the tournament, Aug. 27-Sept. 3 at Spruce City Stadium. Gareau, the top pitcher at the International Softball Congress world championship in 2005 and a three-time first-team all-star in the ISC world event, was announced Thursday as part of the Black Bears team. Gareau, who lives in Victoria, says he’s looking forward to the tournament. He knows what kind of support to expect for the home team, having played for the Prince George Blazers at the 1995 Canadian junior national championship in Prince George. “
