Click the Ballparkradio logo below for “click to listen links”.

Though not on the main broadcast schedule, Ballparkradio is working on special arrangements to carry the Team Rainey vs. Kitchener Hallman Twins game at 10pm CST/8pm PST live on Ballparkradio.com.

We’ll post further notes here at the Morning Brief, and at Ballparkradio today (Sunday), but as of today, the prospects of the game being on the air are very good. Stay tuned — literally.

A “click to listen” link will be displayed prominently on the main page at Ballparkradio, to make it easy for our listeners.
Jim Flanagan will broadcast, and hopefully be joined in progress by ISC II Commissioner Blair Setford, arriving from an earlier broadcast at Chippewa Falls where the two are both members of the ISC II Broadcast crew, broadcasting the ISC II Tournament of Champions all week long. Jim is from So Cal, and is familiar with Team Rainey, while Blair is from the Ontario province near Kitchener, and is familiar with the Hallman Twins, so the broadcast figures to be a lot of fun.

Special thanks to the ISC and the ISC Broadcast crew, for making this broadcast possible, with special tip of the cap to Scott Meyer at Clearwire Broadband and Rick Harder at Imagineering, our computer gurus here in Wisconsin for their work to make it happen.

Clearwire is the next generation of broadband, providing “WiMax” coverage for the entire complex at the ISC II Tournament at Chippewa Falls. The complex is covered by a virtual “umbrellla” of wireless internet, providing a hi-speed internet connection not only for the ISC II broadcast crew, but also for the general public. Anyone with a laptop and wireless card can simply turn on their computer and login to the internet. The signal also blankets most of Eau Claire, including the fields where the ISC World Tournament is taking place. Whereas many of us have “wifi”, that reaches all over our house, the range is measured in feet. The range of WiMax, on the other hand, is measured in miles. Very impressive, I think, and some new technology that will make broadcasting fastball games easier in the future, as the technology becomes more widespread.

ASA Major Tournament Gets Underway Thursday, Aug. 4

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2005

Rod Peterson’s Farm Tavern Set to Defend ASA Major Title

The ASA Men’s Major Tournament gets underway Thursday at 6pm EST (3pm west coast time), at Altamonte Springs, Florida, with two opening round games:

The Farm Tavern, Madison, WI vs. Quaker Riversharks, PA
Tampa Bay Smokers, FL vs. Keating Fitness, PA

The Farm Tavern has won the tournament the last two years in a row, and will go for a “three-peat” in 2005. Last year, they were led by pitcher Dean Holoien, who set a new ASA record for 21 strikeouts in a game, and threw a no-hitter in the championship game win over Broken Bow. Click here to read Bill Plummer’s recap of last year’s finale, courtesy of Al’s Fastball.

Rumor has it that a couple of local (and well known) So Cal players will be wearing the Farm’s familiar “pig” logo tomorrow night, joining another Californian who is a regular member of the squad Todd Budke, while a Northern California player may be in a Riversharks uniform. Budke was a First Team All American at third base in last year’s tournament.

The winner of the Farm-Riversharks game will play Florida Fastpitch, which drew a first round bye, while the winner of the Tampa Bay-Keatings game will face Team Iowa, which got a first round forfeit/bye with the So Cal Bombers dropping out of the tournament.

The six team tournament runs through Saturday night. Click here for the bracket.

Sox pitchers Chuck Vranich (16-5) and Randy Clay (13-6) were a combined 29-11 on the year.

In just their second year in the So Cal ASA Alliance, the Sox finished third, winning three of the seven Alliance events held, the first one in Palm Springs, another mid-season, and the last one of the year just a couple weeks ago. The Sox were the only team in the Alliance to win more than one tournament during the season. They are among six teams from the Alliance to have qualified for the ASA “C” Nationals to be held in Stockton, California, September 1-5, 2005.

Aussie Colts Blitz to Win 3rd Straight Junior Men’s World Softball

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

The Aussie Colts, Australia’s Under 19 Men’s Softball Team, have won their third straight Junior Men’s World Softball Championship with an outstanding performance that saw them remain undefeated throughout the championship, which was played in Summerside on Prince Edward Island in Canada, from 24 June to 3 July. The Aussie Colts won a hard fought gold medal match 7-2 against Japan.

The Aussie Colts were the favourites for the championship after victories in this event in 1997 in Canada and in 2001 in Sydney. The Colts made a great start to the championship, winning all eight of their preliminary matches to finish on top of the ladder and advance to the semi finals. They proved too strong for Japan in the semi final, winning 6-1 to book a place in the gold medal match.

Japan won through to the gold medal match with victory over Canada in the preliminary final. The gold medal match was a closely fought contest, with the Aussie Colts scoring the first two runs before Japan struck back with the next two. With the match evenly poised in the sixth innings at 2-2, Colts player Garon Clough was brought into the game to bat with runners on first and second base. He responded to the challenge in fine style, smashing a home run to score three runs for the Colts and break the spirit of the Japanese players. The Colts went on to win the final 7-2.

Every Colts player performed well at the championship, both in offense and defense. The standout in the team was pitcher Adam Folkard, who pitched 109 strikeouts in the nine matches he pitched in. The Colts were a very strong batting team, hitting a total of 11 home runs whilst keeping the opposition to just 11 runs in the 10 matches they played.

The Aussie Colts team was as follows:

Players: James Brooks, Garon Clough, Ashton Edwards, Adam Folkard, Nic Green, Jon Hudson, Josh Jones, Shaun Mason, Michael Munro, Damien Nairn, Nick Norton, Adam Raptis, Andrew Ratten, Jamie Sheehan, Travis Southam, Matt Torpey, Ryan Van Coevorden.

Officials: Lindsey Carroll (Head Coach), Laing Harrow (Assistant Coach), Darrin Hebditch (Assistant Coach), John Neilson (Trainee Coach), Maxine Cleary (Team Administrator/Statistician), Mary Magarey (Team Physiotherapist), Leigh Evans (Umpire).
