Bracket Released for ASA “C” National Qualifier at Stockton, CA

Wednesday, May 25th, 2005

Twenty-four teams will vie for two ASA “C” National Tournament berths in a double-elimination qualifier this weekend, May 28-29, 2005, at Louis Park in Stockton, CA. Stockton will also host the National Tournament over the Labor Day weekend in September.

Ron Kirby’s Rounders are the lone entrant from the Southern California region. The Rounders will face A-1 Tank of Hayward, California in their first round game at 2:00 p.m. at Louis Park in Stockton. (Their original first round opponent, Team Taylor has withdrawn from the tournament). A-1 Tank finished 7th in the ASA “B” Nationals in 2000, 13th in the ASA “B” Nationals in 2002, and were approved to return to the “C” division in January 2005. The Rounders finished 13th among 70 teams at last year’s ASA “C” National Tournament in Hastings, with a 4-2 record.

The highest finishing team playing in the qualifier at Stockton this weekend, are the Nielsen Realty Gamblers, who finished 9th in the ASA “C” Nationals at Hastings, NE last year, with a 3-2 record. Nielsen will take on Gaines Liquor at 8:30am Saturday morning.

The winner of the Rounders/A-1 Tank game will play the winner Oroville/Savala Painters vs. McLaughlin Air at 8:30 p.m. The Savala Painters are currently in first place in the Central California travel league, with a 9-1 record. With the addition of ISC stars, Dean Holoien, Todd Budke and Wayne Wells, the Painters recently won the Red Rock Tournament at St. George Utah.

Also in the Rounders/Painters end of the bracket is the always tough West Coast Financial, which finished 3rd in the ASA “C” Nationals in 2003 at College Station, TX.

Winner’s bracket games are scheduled for 8am, 10am, 12:00, 12:30pm, 2:30pm, 8:30pm, and 10pm Saturday, and 10am, 2pm, with the championship game at 6pm Sunday. The “if” game is slated for 8pm Sunday.

Loser’s bracket games are scheduled for 4pm, 6pm, 6:30pm, 10pm and 10:30pm Saturday, and 8am, 8:30am, 10:30am, 12:30pm, 2pm and 4pm Sunday.

Linus Software Stealers Blogging Game Results

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

We are pleased to share some news from up north, British Columbia, from “roving reporter” Darren Strang, pitcher for the Linus Software Stealers. For those who might not have visited the Stealer’s team website, IMHO, it’s one of the best fastball team sites on the ‘net. And now they’ve added a blog to go with it, to keep fastball fans abreast of their latest game results. Here’s a sample of the most recent post at the blog — click the “Read the rest…” link at the end to read the whole thing.

It’s Miller Time!
The Linus Software Stealers traveled to Connaught Park on Tuesday to face the Meralomas. The weather threatened to shut this one down but the skies were clear at game time. The Lomas sent the young gun from the Maritimes Jon Kane to the mound. The Stealers countered with Darren Strang. Again the Stealer bats were hot, Corey Manns drew a lead off walk and was moved around by a Mark Dunlop single. A collection of hits and errors plated Dunlop and Manns for a 2 – 0 Stealers lead. That lead was later increased in the first inning when Paul Arthur reached on a single and was driven home by a Doug Miller homerun. Miller just back after missing the first few games of the season didn’t stop there as he finished the night going 3 – 4 with 3 HR’s and 5 RBI. Darren Strang got the win as the Stealers finished up with a 9 – 2 win. That win takes the Stealers premier record to 3 – 2 – 0 and overall record to 5 – 5 – 2. The next action for the Stealers will be Thursday when they take on the Giants from South Hill at Steveston Park at 7:30. [Read the rest of the entry at the Stealers’ blog…]

(Editor’s note: There are a number of sites offering free blogs, like the one that the Stealers are using. Readers may recognize the format of the Stealer blog as google’s, which we used for this Morning Brief before we installed WordPress software which now runs the Morning Brief. No matter the software, blogs are a great tool for getting your team up on the web, especially for those who don’t have the time or inclination to do an entire site. And as you can see from the Stealer’s blog, they also make a great adjunct to the main site. Click the “Blogger” icon on the Stealer’s blog for more information if you’re interested in creating your own. And if you do set one up, be sure to drop us a line so we can link you up.)

Australian team looking forward to Summerside experience

By Pat Healey, Marketing and Media Consultant, ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championship

CANBERRA, AUSTRALIA – Team Australia is looking forward to a great deal of Canadian hospitality, including die-hard softball fans and lots of lobster during their month-long trip for the ISF 2005 Jr. Men’s World Softball Championship June 24 to July 3 in Summerside. The Aussies will begin their tour June 10 when they arrive for 10 days of exhibition games and training in the Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont., region before heading to Summerside for the actual championship.

Team coach Lindsey Carroll said adjusting to the time difference and atmosphere in Canada and the fact they are currently out of season is one of the reasons they will be coming over two weeks before their first game. “It is important to give the team and coaching staff as much diamond time prior to the world championships as possible.,” said Carroll. The team has 20 games in South Perth arranged with the Kitchener Hallman Twins, Milverton, Innerkip, Elmira, Sebringville Sting, Mitchell Mets and two games against All Star teams with the first in Niagara Falls against the Golden Horeshoe Fastball League All Stars on Monday June 13.

The team open’s its campaign at the Senior Men’s tournament in Mitchell, before also touring Niagara Falls and watching a Toronto Blue Jays Major League Baseball game at Rogers Centre, Carroll explained. Confirmed games include four games (two double headers) in Belmore, Ont. June 16 and 17. They will be against Elmira and Belmore (June 16) and the Bluewater All Stars and Harriston (June 17). Games begin at 7 and 9 p.m. “Many players haven’t toured overseas or even been on a plane trip that was longer than four hours,” said Carroll. Since players are spread across Australia, training is conducted under the supervision of satellite coaches five times a week in preparation for the tournament. Currently, players are working on positional defensive while offensive sessions are held in the week while regular monthly testing is held to monitor the player’s progress, Carroll noted. Carroll said the Aussie team has a good balance of players, which is key when entering any championship tournament. “As a team I think we have a great balance of power hitting, slappers, bunters and speed which is what it takes to perform well at any championships,” he said. ” Our pitching staff also has speed and variety with five entirely different pitchers.”

Most of the Australian team have been together since 2001, playing almost 75 games as a group of 17. The team was selected following the Australian National Championships in Perth in January, 2005. Carroll is taking the step-by-step attitude into the ISF 2005 World
championship. “In any championship it’s important to build during the week, ensuring you peak at the right time of the tournament,” he said. “If everyone stays injury free, I would hope we achieve our first goal in making the play-off’s and we will see what happens from there.”
The Business Analyst with the Australian Government at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs in Canberra is not taking any team for granted, and isn’t letting his players either. “In an Under 19 event where the players are different every four years, you can never underestimate any participating country,” Carroll explained. “We will be respecting every country that takes the diamond but given past world championship results I would be expecting strong competition from the host country Canada, New Zealand, Japan and USA.” As for coming to Canada, and it’s “warm” summers, Carroll is anxious for the day to get here.

“Personally, being from Canberra, I’m looking forward to the warmer weather we will experience during our stay, as the winter months in Canberra are cold,” he said. “It will also be good for the players to meet people from other countries and play softball in front of softball loving fans of Canada. “But most importantly, I believe the lobster is good in PEI.”

ISC Out-of-Area Players List Posted

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005

The ISC has posted its “Out of Area” players lists for 2005. The ISC rules require listing of players from outside the geographic region of the team. It makes for interesting reading. Not surprisingly, last year’s top teams lead the list in the number of OOA players, reigning champion Broken Bow (NY) and runnerup County Materials (WI) with 15 and 13, respectively. The Farm Tavern (WI) also has 13 OOA players. Patsy’s, a new team from the Northeast with New Zealand great Marty Grant has a dozen.

Southern California teams, the So Cal Bombers and Team Rainey have four OOA players each:

SoCal Bombers
Mendibles, Albert CO-NM-AZ-NV
Ormsby, Glenn WA-OR-BC
Waltier, Dean WA-OR-BC
Underhill, Nick WA-OR-BC

Team Rainey
Anderson, Bricklin WA-OR-BC
Hardesty, Chad CO-NM-AZ-NV
Smith, Rick WA-OR-BC
Whiteford, Daniel WA-OR-BC

Observant readers will note that Sonny Perkins, who pitches with Team Rainey during part of the season, will be with Team Iowa at the ISC World Tournament, while Rick Smith will bolster the Rainey squad. Nick Underhill pitches with the Vancouver Grey Sox during the season, but will pitch with the SoCal Bombers at the World Tournament, as the Grey Sox are not bidding to go, electing instead to compete in the Sr. Canadians.

For those of you not familiar with another of Team Rainey’s new additions, Dan Whiteford, he’ll also be with the Vancouver Grey Sox for the Sr. Canadians. Here’s what Vancouver’s Conrad Margolis had to say about him:

“Dan Whiteford, a versatile IF/OF from Duncan, BC has joined the Grey Sox after playing the last two seasons with Victoria Travellers Inn. In 2004 Dan was the starter at 2B for Victoria, but he also plays 3B, SS and OF. “Whitey” hits the ball hard from the left side and is a welcome addition to the team.”

Feel free to post a comment here if you note any other player movement of interest to our readers.

Dolan & Murphy, the #28 team in the 2005 preseason ISC rankings
knocked off #17 ranked Bull/Towline and the rest of the field, to take the Dick Tracy Tournament title for the third year in a row. Former So Cal fastballer Jason Iuli picked up the win, going the distance in the title game, a 5-1 win over #31 ranked BHAC. News on the #21 ranked Pueblo Bandits

Monday, May 16th, 2005

Here’s a post from the Pueblo Bandits, catching us up on their season thus far. The Bandits have qualified for a number of ISC World Tournaments in recent years, and started the season as the #21 ranked team in the preseason 2005 ISC World Tournament rankings. The team is headed up by the Manley brothers, Jeremy and Regan, from New Zealand, though Jeremy’s been on the DL with a tendon injury to his hand up ’til now. Brother Regan had to throw all six games at the recent Red Rock tournament, suffering a couple of tough Saturday losses, including one to the eventual champion, the Californa Painters with Dean Holoien on loan from the Farm. The Bandits bounced back to win a couple of games Sunday, and finished as runnerup to the consolation Champions, CR/DeMarini from Portland, OR. More details by clicking the link below.

A Look at the 2005 Roster & Schedule for JRW & Associates from Yakima, WA

Friday, May 13th, 2005

Here’s the roster and schedule for JRW & Associates, which finished 10th in last year’s ISC II Tournament of Champions. The pitching staff includes longtime Northwest pitchers Dave Drotzman, and the ageless wonder, Mike Trotter, still bringing it at age 65. (For someone that just turned 50, he offers a bit of hope and lot of inspiration.) Former Portland player Paul Reyes and pitcher Matt Barnes return to the Northwest to strengthen the JRW roster for 2005. Reyes played most recently with Team Rainey, while Barnes had been in semi-retirement in California.
