Drotzmann aims for National Team

By DANIEL WATTENBURGER
The East Oregonian

HERMISTON – In the world of men’s fastpitch softball, few have had the kind of year Dr. Dave Drotzmann can boast.

Not only did the Hermiston optometrist and school board chairman help his Bakersfield, Calif. club team – the Lumber Kings – win the International Softball Congress championship over the summer, he won the Most Valuable Pitcher award at the tournament and was invited to compete for a spot on the U.S. National team.

It was the fifth time Drotzmann had pitched at the international tournament, and though he has a lifetime ERA of under 1.00 at the event he had never reached the gold medal.

“It’s an absolute team game and the team that makes the least mistakes almost always wins,” he said. “That’s the reason I play – the challenge of trying to be the best.”

At the 32-team tournament, 32 games were decided by fewer than two runs and 17 were decided by one.

The 38-year-old and the Lumber Kings finished third in the 2007 tournament, losing in the semifinals by a run.

“The reason we didn’t win last year was the pressure,” he said. “You have to minimize your mistakes.”

Drotzmann carries a mid- to upper-70s fastball, which translates to about 110 miles per hour at the major league level.

In the off-season he works out four times a week and throws two or three times to keep his pitching sharp. The U.S. National team tryout is later this month in Chula Vista, Calif., near San Diego, where he will join teammate and tournament MVP Marcus Tan.

The National team will play in two international events, the AAU Tournament in Orlando, Fla. in January and the ISF World Softball Tournament in Saskatchewan in July.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” Drotzmann said. “It will be fun to be a part of if nothing else. Just to be invited and train at the facilities will be a lot of fun.”

Many players in men’s fastpitch are former major league players, and a total of 34 were invited to tryout for 17 spots on the National team. Drotzmann is one of eight pitchers trying out for four spots.

ISC Names Potolicchio As South American Player Rep

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

From Ken Hackmeister, Executive Director of the ISC:

At the recent ISC Board of Directors meeting in Kimberly, the body approved naming a South American Player Rep. This new position replaces the former At-Large Player Rep position held by Michael White. With Michael retired from the game, he is no longer eligible to be a Player Rep.

We thank Michael’s years of service as an ISC Player Rep where he served professionally and productively. It was Michael’s concept that led to the approval of the ISC’s PRAWN program.

Michael committed his continued service to the ISC if and when his input and talents are needed. He was very gracious about the change.

Juan Potolicchio, a 26 year old pitcher from Argentina has been named to the new position of South American Player Rep. With the increasing number of South American’s coming to the US and Canada to play ISC ball, it was felt they deserved a formal voice on the ISC Player Rep Committee.

Juan has been playing fastball since age 14. He is single and is currently studying Industrial Engineering and working in Industrial Resource Safety. He has been playing in North America for the past 5-years, most recently with Dolan & Murphy of Aurora, IL.

He is a highly intelligent person as evidenced by his Mensa membership. He reads, writes and speaks fluent English.

Please join us in welcoming Juan as a new ISC Player Rep.

News Story on Derek Mayson

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

This story ran last week, during the Senior Canadians in Saskatoon. Though that tournament has concluded, we thought this story on one of the West Coast’s finest players was worth sharing.

With Mayson as clutch, Grey Sox hit second gear

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

If the bases are loaded with two outs and the winning run at third base, Vancouver Grey Sox coach John Stuart knows exactly who he’d like at the plate.

His first pick would be young Derek Mayson, a member of Canada’s national men’s softball team and four-year veteran with the defending national champion Grey Sox.

Mayson, 24, can do as much in the clutch as anybody gathered in Saskatoon this week for the 2008 Ramada Canadian senior A men’s fastpitch championship.

“Of all the guys I’ve coached over the years, he’s the guy I want there with two out and the bases loaded,” Stuart said Tuesday afternoon after watching the Grey Sox blank the Horse Lake, Alta., Thunder 3-0 at Bob Van Impe Stadium.

“I’m confident in Derek. He’s definitely a key member of our batting lineup. I feel he’s one of the top five hitters in Canada. He’s a threat to do anything. He can lay it down, he hits the long ball and he hits the ball hard. Even if he hits the ball hard on the ground, he usually finds a hole or hits somebody hard and he still gets on base. He’s a very patient hitter.

Former ISC Player Gary “P.K.” Kershner Inducted into Washington County Sports Hall of Fame

County Hall inducts nine

July 20, 2008
By DAN KAUFFMAN (kauffman@herald-mail.com)

FUNKSTOWN – It’s been eight months since former St. James athletic director and football coach Charles “Chick” Meehan coached the 207th and final game of a successful career that spanned 34 years.

Meehan was one of nine honorees inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday at New Dimensions Restaurant. Meehan was joined by Donna Aycoth, Terry Bailey, Gary “P.K.” Kershner, Joe Snyder, Jim Gossard and three “Pioneer” members: Charles Boyer, J. Vincent Jamison and John “Ike” Powers.

* Kershner, a shortstop, played baseball at South Hagerstown and earned a scholarship to Murray State University, where he made the All-Ohio Valley Conference First Team twice. After graduating in 1963, he went on to star in fastpitch softball around the Washington area, reaching the International Softball Conference World Tournament, and was indicted into the Greater Washington Fast-Pitch Hall of Fame in 1986.

“I probably was always a defensive ballplayer,” Kershner said. “I loved the game, and the transition (from baseball to fastpitch softball) was pretty easy.

“I tried some semipro baseball, that didn’t pan out, but softball, what a game, a super, super game. I played against a lot of world champions.”

Reder gets chance to play with USA Jr. Men

By Paul Johnson Special to the Beacon News

It’s been quite a whirlwind for recent Marmion graduate Robert Reder in the world of fastpitch softball.

His grandfather, Bob, and father, Robin, are a part of the long-time tradition of the sport in Aurora. And after an appearance with Team USA at the International Softball Federation Junior Men’s World Fast Pitch Championship, Robert has joined that tradition as well.

Reder caught every other game for Team USA — which finished 5-6 at the tournament — which was held at Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada, from June 20-29.

Two years ago, Robert Reder was discovered subbing for his father’s team and suddenly found himself playing for the 19U national team.

“I was surprised I made the team,” Reder said. “Usually there is a national tournament that the kids play in, and I never went to one. I just filled in for a team and someone there knew (national team coach Tim Lyon) and told him about me. It was really cool.”

Twelve countries were represented at the tournament, which was won by Australia. For Reder, it was the first time that he had ever left the country and had the chance to interact with so many people from such diverse backgrounds, one of the highlights of the trip.

“I hung out with a lot of kids from New Zealand and Argentina,” Reder said. “Argentina had a couple of translators with them. It was kind of funny. The New Zealanders have that cool accent, and they were all big boys. It was fun off the field getting to know everyone. They’re just teenagers like us.”

Prior to heading up to the Yukon Territory, the team played some games in Utah to prepare for the world championships. From Salt Lake City, the team flew 2½ hours to Vancouver and had a layover before flying another 2½ hours to Whitehorse.

“The travel was kind of frustrating,” Reder said. “It took a whole day to get up there. The airport in Whitehorse is a lot smaller than Chicago. That was weird. And I didn’t expect it to be that much colder up there. It was about 60 the whole time.”

Reder will still play softball “here and there, whenever I can” the rest of the summer. He has not closed the door on his baseball career either. He is headed to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the fall and will try to walk on to the baseball team.

But softball is suddenly on Reder’s radar for years to come.

“I still like baseball,” Reder said. “I don’t really have a preference. After college, hopefully I get to play baseball, but after that, I’m sure I’ll be coming back and playing for my dad’s team (Dolan & Murphy). It’s a family thing.”

Fred Hanker Injured, Out for 6 Weeks

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

We are sorry to report that Fred Hanker, owner, manager and top hitter for the Long Beach Black Sox was injured during SCIFL league play over the weekend and will be out for 6 weeks, according to reports on Sunday. Fred suffered a deep gash on his index finger (glove hand) from a sliding baserunner. He was treated and stitched up at a nearby hospital, with doctors telling Fred that the gash very nearly hit the tendon, which would have required surgery. As it is, Fred will miss the 4th of July tournament in Beaumont, as well as the final two league weekends of SCIFL league play, July 12-13 in Santa Barbara and July 26-27 back in Santa Fe Springs.

The loss is a big blow to the Black Sox, who were in the midst of a solid season, and gearing up for the NAFA World Series in Mankato, Minnesota in August. Fred arrived in camp at the beginning of the season in great shape, and has been the Sox top hitter this season. Fred also runs one of the more popular team websites around, though I doubt that he will feel like doing much typing for the next month or so. We wish him a speedy recovery.

We reached Fred on Monday morning, and he had this to say:

“I’m lucky its on my left index finger and not my right. The emergency room doctor said she doesn’t think it cut the tendon but it came came very close. I have to go see my primary doctor in 10 days to get stitches off for further examination.”

Fred also said that he hopes that the six week estimate to heal is on the high side, and hopes to be back in action, but time will tell.
