Ghostkeeper to Vancouver for 2007 Senior Canadians

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Editor’s note: We gratefully thank Sports Editor Jim Swanson and the Prince George Citizen newspaper, both for granting permission to reprint their stories here at Fastpitchwest, and for providing the fastpitch community with such great coverage in the first place. Readers will recall that during last year’s Senior Canadian National Tournament, they ran feature stories on teams and players every day, in addition to the game by game reports, remarkable coverage for men’s fastpitch in this day and age, where many papers ignore the sport altogether. Today’s story, reprinted below is another well-written piece. Ghostkeeper moving from the hometown Black Bears to the arch rival Vancouver Grey Sox? Tantamount to Johnny Damon signing with the Yankees ! So to the folks at the Citizen, we say “well done — again”. Your newspaper’s coverage of men’s fastpitch is among the best in the nation. We’ve posted from a few more newspapers graciously providing coverage for men’s fastpitch, including the Argus Leader in Sioux Falls SD, the SE Missourian and the Du Quoin Evening Call in Illinois. Know of any others providing good coverage for men’s fastpitch? Let us know.

GREY SOX CATCH A CATCHER FROM P.G.

by JASON PETERS, Citizen staff

At the 2006 Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship in Prince George, Chad Ghostkeeper was front and centre in pulling down the hated Vancouver Grey Sox.

When this year’s nationals step on the diamond in St. John’s, Nfld., Ghostkeeper will be there. And he’ll be wearing a Grey Sox uniform.

Ghostkeeper, a 35-year-old Prince George resident, has signed on with the Grey Sox for the Canadian championship tournament, set for Aug. 26 to Sept. 2.

Has he crossed over to the dark side? He doesn’t see it that way.

“I don’t really see them as an enemy,” said Ghostkeeper, the all-star catcher at the 2006 nationals as a member of the now-defunct Prince George Black Bears. “They’ve been bugging me throughout the year (to play for them at nationals). There were a few teams that were bugging me, and I just thought I would go to Vancouver. I know a few guys on the team, and it’s a lot closer.”

During the 2006 tournament, played at Spruce City Stadium, the Grey Sox — loaded with national-team talent — were one of the favourites to leave town with the title. Because of their star-studded roster, they became a target for other teams. The Sox ended up 2-5 after the round-robin portion of the event, won their first playoff game, and were then eliminated after a 4-1 loss to the Black Bears. The Bears had also beaten the Grey Sox in round robin. That game, won 8-1 by Prince George, was cut short by the mercy rule.

Illinois Fastpitch – Dolan & Murphy’s

Shamrocks beat up on opponents, each other in victory

By John Sahly Staff Writer

Jason Iuli was actually happy to face his own team on Tuesday night.

The third pitcher for the Dolan and Murphy softball team took the opportunity to get some work in against a solid Shamrocks lineup while pitching for the ATMI softball team.

In pitching a complete game, Iuli took his lumps but said he pitched well in ATMI’s 7-0 loss to Dolan and Murphy, at Stuart Sports Complex to conclude the Aurora Fastpitch Softball Association’s showcase.

“I think this was a good chance for me to work on a few things before we go play a bunch of top-10 and top-15 teams,” Iuli said. “I think I pitched pretty well tonight.”

Iuli pitched for ATMI, a team largely considered to be a farm team for Dolan and Murphy, in order to keep the game competitive. That also gave Iuli an opportunity to lead a team consisting of players mostly under 21 years old against an older and more experienced team. He took full advantage of that opportunity after ATMI struck out five times in the first two innings.

Player Photo Gallery at Fastpitchwest

Thursday, June 7th, 2007

It’s been a while since we’ve updated our Player Photo Gallery at Fastpitchwest. . It’s a work in progress, but we’d like to include as many players as possible.

To be included, just send us an email at photos (at) fastpitchwest.com, with a link to your favorite photo of yourself that is posted at Fastpitchwest and we’ll add you to the mix.

Or if you’d like us to post a different photo than the one that is presently linked, just send us an email with the new link. Maybe you’re with a different team now, and would like a current pic. Maybe that beard you used to have doesn’t suit your new look, or maybe Maddy caught you in a Michael-Jordanesque pose with your tongue sticking out. Whatever the case may be, just shoot us an email and we’ll update with your new favorite.

And if you can’t find your smiling face among the thousands of photos posted at Fastpitchwest, send us one of your own. (or if you know there is a photo, but for some reason, it’s no longer posted online, tell us the date and tournament that it was taken at.

Best to send a link if you can find one though, as it will get posted quicker. If there’s a photo at another website, we’ll need their permission to link it up.

Maddy’s 2007 Red Rock Photo Slideshow

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Maddy has been experimenting with some new software and has come up with something we hope you enjoy – a “flash” slideshow of her Red Rock Tournament photos, all 203 that were selected for web display.

You’ll note that there are several ways you can view them. Click the word View” in the upper left of the screen to choose whether you want to view the slideshow or as a regular photo gallery. Personally, I like to sit back and watch the slideshow. You can see what each button is for by “mousing over” them. The one in the middle is to play the slide show, the little ones to either side are to go forwards or backwards. Another nice feature is that you can see the number of the photo right next to it, in case you want to tell a friend to look at a particular photo.

You can make the photo larger by clicking the little “TV screen” icon on the lower left to get rid of the thumbnails.

There is also a “slider” at the bottom to fast forward or rewind (and you can resume the slideshow after the jump)

The only thing I don’t like is that the photos seem a bit small, at least by comparison to the galleries we usually do. Not to worry, we’ll post those soon, so you’ll be able to see the full size photos. I should mention that this new slideshow takes up as tremendous amount of hard drive space on the server, so I won’t be able to leave it up too long. So if you want to watch it, watch it this week.

I’ll be interested in feedback from all of you about the slideshow and new software, so if you have time, drop us a line. Send comments to jim (at) fastpitchwest (dot) com. (Let me know how long it takes to load on your computer, and what type of connection you have, e.g. dial-up, cable, T1, etc.)

And if you have a comment about the photos in general, drop Maddy a line, maddy (at) maddysphotos (dot) com, so she knows her hard work is worth the effort and expense.

Click here to view the slideshow

(If the slideshow freezes, just click the little “forward” button to nudge it along, as the software is tempermental at times.)

Lucas Mata to So Cal Bombers

Tuesday, May 1st, 2007

Editor’s note: Ever since County Materials claimed its second ISC World Title in 2006, then announced the cessation of operations, people have been asking:

“Where will Lucas Mata wind up in 2007?”
The answer is finally out: The So Cal Bombers.

LUCAS MATA MOVES TO MEXICO, SIGNS WITH SO CAL BOMBERS

Lucas Mata, one of the premier softball pitchers in the World has decided to move to Mexico and pursue his softball career from other than his homeland in Argentina. Mata feels he will be better positioned to compete and deal with the U.S. Visa problems he has encountered in the past, being closer to the North American softball scene. Mata was a member of World Champion County Materials team the past few seasons and was an All-World pitcher in 2003 and 2005.

The Softball Federation of Mexico, the So Cal Bombers, and Ralph Trejo Jr. have been instrumental in assisting Mata with his move. He has arranged a long term lease in Ensenada in the Baja California area of Mexico and made arrangement with the Softball Federation to work for them as a pitching instructor. Living and working in a Spanish speaking setting works well for him and positions him to better pursue all avenues of his softball career.

In addition, the SoCal Bombers are pleased to announce his signing for the 2007 season and he will be with them for all events outside of the U.S. including the World Tournament in Kitchener later this year. If Lucas is able to acquire his U.S. Visa sometime later this year, he will join the Bombers at all events.

The SoCal Bombers Adjusted Roster:

1. Darren Box C/OF
2. Mike Butler INF
3. Greg “Scrappy” Crawford OF
