(click any photo to enlarge & view)

You may have noted the colorful “Frappr” link on the front page of Fastpitchwest. Our “Frappr” map shows where fastball fans and readers of Fastpitchwest reside, via a clever application of Google maps. The folks at Frappr have added a few new features, including one which allows you to modify the color of your flag, to indicate if you are a player (red), umpire (blue, of course), teams (green), fan (white), or yellow (organization, league or official of same). If you are already a member, you can modify yours by logging in.

If you haven’t “planted your flag”, yet, you can do so, along with an optional photo and “shout out” by clicking here.

Hustlers Sign “Shaw Quartet” for 2006

Wednesday, December 21st, 2005

The Hustlers, runner-ups at last month’s Cal Cup II tournament, bolstered their ASA “C” Alliance roster for 2006 with the acquisition of the “Shaw quartet” of Doug and his son Matt and Kenny and his son Kasey. The Shaws played last year for Raymar, which took 3rd in the ASA “C” Nationals at Hastings, NE in 2004. After the bump up of six of the top teams to the “B” level, the Hustlers figure to be among those contending for the 2006 “C” crown. Player-manager Bobby Cole had this to say about the addition of the Shaws:

“All four will plug holes for the Hustlers offensively and defensively with Kenny giving the Hustlers a veteran second baseman and leadoff hitter. Doug, a RBI machine and a solid glove at first base. Matt, an outfielder with a cannon for an arm and one of the best young hitters in the game and Kasey, an untapped talent with tons of potential.”

Passing of Gary Vargas

Monday, December 12th, 2005

Early Saturday morning Gary Vargas lost his fight against lung cancer. Detected in the early part of this year he survived chemotherapy to return to work only to get set back down this late fall. Gary, a long time dominant pitcher out of the Hayward area for several teams was probably best remembered as one of the pitching staff along with Peter Brown, Rich Balswick and Steve Padilla, who carried the Nor Cal Merchants fastpitch team to the start of their run of three straight National Championships in the 40 and over Masters Division.

Family services will be closed. Brother Rick Vargas and his family are inviting family and friends to a Memorial Service with a celebration of Gary’s life to follow at the Patrick Gomer softball field in Hayward starting at one thirty pm. on Sunday January 15, 2006.

If anyone would like to share any experiences or stories about Gary, please forward that information to Rick Vargas at the following:
