Minnesota connection, a California manager’s dream

“He brings a rare combination of veteran experience in a young pitcher.”

LAKE CRYSTAL, MN – The 2010 fastpitch softball season has been a big thrill for John Peterson of Lake Crystal, Minnesota. And why not? After all, how many Minnesota fastpitch players get to board an airplane on Friday afternoon and fly to sunny California and play ball on the weekends?

Well actually, with the shortage of pitchers in the men’s game, the odds are pretty good that some team in need of good pitching will call.

So for those windmillers with the talent, they can basically point anywhere on a U.S. Atlas Travel Guide, and say, “I think I’d like to pitch there.”

That’s not quite how it happened for Peterson, but you get the point.

Born and raised in Lake Crystal, Peterson signed on with the Cal-State Builders from the San Francisco Bay Area. And it’s been nothing but fun, said the 26-year-old, 6-foot-1, 260 pounder who declares his drop ball and change up his two best pitches.

“I like this group of guys; we’ve really hit it off together,” said Peterson. “California has been a great time and I’ve been able to see new teams.”

The Cal-State Builders of the San Francisco Bay Area

But how did Peterson, who plays for a local Lake Crystal team, get connected with the Cal-State Builders over 2,500 miles away?

The answer: Friendship.

A job transfer sent Jon Abbott, who was also born and raised in Lake Crystal, to San Francisco. Abbott – a standout catcher and infielder – was looking to hook on with a team. He connected with Cal-State Builder’s owner and manager, Dave Carlton, and soon everything started falling neatly in place for Peterson and Abbott.

“Skipper (Carlton) asked Jon if he knew of any pitchers in Minnesota,” Peterson said. “Jon and I are good friends, and he suggested me.”

And what a good suggestion that has turned out to be for the Builders.

“John has been the workhorse with a 10-3 record and one save,” said Carlton. “It’s been a difficult transition to face the ISC (International Softball Congress) major hitters, but he has stepped up in every situation.”

And in their very first meeting, Carlton tested Peterson’s mettle. He pointed Peterson to the rubber in the eighth inning of a scoreless international tiebreaker game. And Peterson came through, picking up the win in the 10th inning.

“He showed strong composure,” Carlton said. “He set the tone for the Builder’s season with that game one performance. He brings a rare combination of veteran experience in a young pitcher.”

The Builders are off to a great start with a 17-4 record. And in large part to Peterson, who has a 10-3 record. In 56 innings, the right-hander has allowed 29 earned runs, struck out 66, and carries a 3.6 ERA. But if two games with highly-ranked ISC major teams are discounted, Peterson’s stats shine with a 10-1 record, 49.2 innings pitched, 59 strikeouts, and sterling 1.55 ERA.

But there’s something else Carlton appreciates about Peterson: His bat.

“He has the ability to hit in clutch situations and has a .478 batting average with runners in scoring position,” Carlton said. “John has given the team a huge lift on the offensive side as well.” In fact, Peterson’s 19 RBI place him second on the ball club to Dave Demaio’s 21.

Dave Demaio, leads the Builders in RBI and carries a .489 batting average.

Now, let’s take a look at the other side of this Minnesota connection – Jon Abbott.

Abbott is the son of former fastpitch player, Chuck Abbott. And he seems to have inherited his father’s hitting genes. The younger Abbott’s .500 batting average (21 for 42) is second among Builders with a minimum of 30 at bats, and his 15 RBI are third highest (tied with Ricky Sivilla and Doug Cain), while his quick feet have stolen 10 bases – tops on the ball club.

“Jon brings a rare combination of speed and power to the top of the lineup,” Carlton said. “He calls a fantastic game behind the plate, and coupled with his outstanding middle infield play, he really is a manager’s dream…”

I wanted to learn more about Minnesota’s John Peterson, so he agreed to a question and answer session from his Lake Crystal home.

Q: What’s the experience been like pitching for the Cal-State Builders? It’s been a step up from what I’ve usually played. It’s made me realize pitching against teams like IAC (Italian Athletic Club, Stockton, CA) and Portland (Portland, OR Columbia River Rockers) that you’ve got to have good location with your pitches. If it’s over the plate, they’re going to hit it.

Q: How did you get your start in fastpitch? My dad (Jim) and brother Matt, 28, played, so I was always around the ballpark. Lake Crystal is a good fastpitch town.

Kris Waverick to the DL

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

Catcher Kris Waverick of Vancouver, B.C. is on the D.L. with a broken wrist. Kris suffered the injury in the semi-final of the Kelowna tournament over Memorial Weekend, on a play at the plate. His wrist was fractured in two places, and will require surgery next Monday, and a new cast. (He’s had one on for two weeks, but will be re-cast after surgery)

Prognosis: He’ll be sidelined for six weeks, and then hopes he can be ready to join the Portland team at the ISC World Tournament in August.

“[It was a] clean slide”, he is quick to add. “It’s disappointing, as it’s the first time in my career i have missed more than a game because of injury i couldn’t play through.”

We wish him a speedy recovery.

Rhys Casley Takes the Mantle

Monday, June 7th, 2010

New Black Sox Captain

A new era has dawned for the Black Sox with the announcement that Rhys Casley will now lead the team, replacing Jarrad Martin who held the role for a decade.

Black Sox coach Eddie Kohlhase believes the Hutt Valley player will provide the leadership required to take the team through to the 2013 World Championships.

“Rhys has been a leader within the Black Sox for a number of years, he is widely respected by his peers for his no nonsense follow me approach. It is however his qualities of humility, integrity and pride that points to this proud Kiwi as the player we believe will lead the Sox with distinction,”
Kohlhase said.

Casley, 31, first made his debut for the Black Sox in 2002 but missed out on making the 2004 team for the world championship. However, a year later he was back in the side and was one of the leading performers at last year’s world championship, playing in all 12 games and was in the top three batters for the team.

He is excited at the opportunity to lead the Black Sox.

“It’s a real privilege for me especially to follow Jarrad. He’s the best player I’ve had the fortune to be a teammate of and I’ve learned so much from him.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of leading this wonderful team. It means a great deal and is a real highlight.”

The iconic Martin will remain an integral part of the team and is part of the senior management group.

His role will be vital according to Kohlhase.

“Jarrad has been the world’s premier player for the past decade, his captaincy of the Black Sox has been nothing short of outstanding. Jarrad will continue to play a major role within the Black Sox as well as mentoring Rhys.”

Martin, took over the captaincy role when Mark Sorenson retired in 2000, was at the helm when the team won its third consecutive world championship in Christchurch in 2004. He then led the team at last year’s world championship.

He remains enthusiastic and positive about his role within the team:

“It’s been a great experience to be part of this team and I’ve been honoured to lead the team.

“I will always be proud of the Black Sox and that’s why I’m staying on to ensure we have the best possible chance of winning in 2013.

“This is a special group and I’m totally supportive of Rhys as our new leader.”

North Dakota State Women Get an Assist from Darcy Byrne

Nice piece in the Seattle Times about the women’s fastpitch team at North Dakota State, who got an assist from longtime Kegel Black Knight pitcher Darcy Byrne, in preparing for their match-up with the top ranked Washington Huskies. Click here for the story.

For those of you in the Pacific Northwest rooting for those # 1 ranked Huskies, here is a preview of their team.

Washington is led by Danielle Lawrie who some are already calling one of the all-time greats. With 1,772 career strikeouts the reigning national player of the year Canadian Olympian needs just two more K’s to rise to No. 4 in the NCAA record book. Ponder these numbers:

35-2 record;
0.99 earned-run average;
three perfect games;
20 shutouts;
407 strikeouts (vs. just 33 walks) in 247-1/3 innings.

Yeah, I’d say practicing against Darcy Byrne was a good idea for North Dakota State.

Oh, and did I mention that she bats cleanup, hit .322 and topped the team in home runs (14) and runs batted in (55)?

ESPNU will televise all games live. All games on all three days are sellouts. Standing-room tickets ($3) will be sold 15 minutes before the start of each game. The upper level of Husky Stadium will be open for long-distance (but free) viewing.

Jennie Finch’s New Website

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

Not that you need an excuse to visit, but Jennie Finch has a new website.

After a stellar college career, Olympic gold, Jennie continues to serve as a great role model, with her youth camps and charity work.

A little background on a local girl who made good (from the official website):

Jennie Finch was born on September 3, 1980, in La Mirada, California and grew up in a close knit family. She is the youngest of Doug and Bev Finch’s three children. Family is important to Jennie and she credits them for much of her success. Jennie’s dad, Doug, spent countless hours working with Jennie over the years. Jennie’s mom is a huge Dodgers fan, and between her love of baseball, Doug’s infinite patience and devotion, and Jennie’s two older brothers who loved to play, Jennie grew up a true blue Dodgers fan with a passion for baseball. She was excited when just after her fifth birthday her parents signed her up for her first t-ball league. She couldn’t wait to play just like her brothers, but this was even cooler because girls were doing it.

Ronnie Rupp Arrives on Facebook

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Anyone that spent much time on the Fastpitchwest Forum knows of the friendly “sparring match” between So Cal fastballers Ronnie Rupp and Gerald Pyle. Ronnie is finally on board at Facebook, and has wasted no time twisting the blade a bit on the Big Man.

Ronnie’s caption for this one: I heard Gerald was gonna pitch all 7 innings in Sherman oaks tonight, so I call channel 7. The people in the ABC news room dispatched a news van immediately to cover this breaking story… Film at 11

I’m not sure who fired the first shot, but the Big Man has gotten in a few good shots of his own, including my favorite:

Some gems:

Ron: “I saw was watching you pitch the 4th inning against Mexicali last year in Palm Springs. They circled the bases so many times, the Doppler radar picked it up as a sand storm!”

Gerald: “Ronald, I found the ball that Rocha hit off of you, it was shaped like a Silver Dollar. That was quite the porterhouse you threw to him.”

Ron: I don’t want you to get discouraged when I hit at least .350 off you this year. When I was 29, I would have clubbed you like a baby seal, but I am 51 now so you should be able to keep me under .400.”

Welcome back to it, fellas.

SELECT SOFTBALL COMPANY

Few would be surprised to hear that Olympics star Jennie Finch was named USA Softball’s female athlete of the year for 2009.

Softball’s male athlete of the year, however, received little notice — until now.

Des Moines player Matt Palazzo led the national team to a fourth-place finish at the ISF Men’s World Championships in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Palazzo led the team with a .444 average and four home runs, while driving in 11 runs and scoring nine times as the team finished 7-3.

“To wear red, white and blue and represent your country is such an amazing thing,” Palazzo said.
