Fastpitchwest Editor’s note:
Great, original piece by Martin Jorge, Editor of Softballnewsla.com is the hottest blog going for Spanish speaking players and fans. We tip our cap to Martin and his great work. With the ISF World Championships coming up in July, the three Spanish speaking countries, Argentina, Mexico and Venezuela will have a place to follow the news, not to mention a larger group of fans in all Spanish speaking countries. (By the way, the “LA” in the site’s name is for “Latin America”, not “Los Angeles”)

Patrick Shannon< is a member of the reigning (2004) ISF World Champions, the New Zealand Black Sox, as well as the reigning (2008) ISC World Champions, the Kitchener Hallman Riversharks. Shannon was 3-for-3 in the 2008 ISC championship game. As noted in this interview, it's safe to say that Shannon has a habit of coming up big in the big games in his career. Here is what his brief bio at the New Zealand Black Sox website says about him:

PATRICK SHANNON
Position: Catcher
Club: Waitakere Bears
Province: Auckland
DOB: 21/06/75
Career details – Patrick first debuted for the NZCT Black Sox in 1995 and was in and out of the team before cementing his place in the side in 2001. Since then he has become a regular feature of the side and was part of the 2004 World Championship winning team. Patrick is joined in the team by his twin brother Heinie.

And now, the interview of Pat Shannon, from www.softballnewsla.com:

– Pat, tell me something about your early days in softball. How, where and why did you start to play softball?

I started playing softball at age 5 in Auckland and I started playing because my Uncles played. One of my Uncles played for the Black Sox and was a catcher.

– I know that your twin brother is a pitcher, and that you had the pleasure of playing with him in the Black Sox. I imagine you both shared thousands of hours of training and play. How is your relationship with him, both inside and outside the field?

Like all brothers, very honest. On the field it’s very close, we know what makes us tick and off the field it’s very relaxed and we try not to talk to much softball.

– You have a particular stance when you are at bat, standing with your feet almost facing the pitcher. How, where and why did you start to have that kind of stance ? What benefits do you think this stance gives to you?

I started having that stance in 1994. I did it because when I stood ‘normal’ I always stepped away from the ball so I opened up my stance which forces me to step to the ball and I haven’t changed back since.

– There is something that surprises me, you have a lot of hits by pitch in your career. Why is that?

Because of my open stance it looks like I’m far off the plate but by the time I come around and step to the ball the gap closes up and results in a pitch that the pitcher thinks is a good inside spot but becomes very close to my body and I usually get hit.

– Your debut with the Black Sox was in 1995, when you were just 20 years old. What did this first call from the Black Sox mean to you?

That dreams do come true but requires alot of hardwork and honesty.

– Was there any player who specially inspired you?

Eddie Kohlase, his leadership and take no prisoner attitude.

ASA California Region 14 Policy Change

Monday, January 19th, 2009

A change in ASA policy noted by an alert Fastpitchwest Forum reader:

In case you haven’t heard, the California ASA in their Oct. meeting put this policy in place. It might impact SCIFL pitchers:

4. Pitchers that live and work outside Region 14 or pitch in another softball association will be rated Major until they submit a letter to the Region 14 Classification committee PRIOR to participating in championship play for a team in Region 14 each season. This letter must include team(s) played for, the level at which they played, and any statistics (team & individual) for the last three years.

Full text located at this link:

http://region14.com/mfp-classify.htm

I don’t know if the Amateur Slowpitch Association is being vindictive because they are not represented in SoCal but anyone who wants to go to the NAFA WS and the ASA (semi)Nationals Rolling Eyes might need to talk to Vicki Oltean, (760) 323-8272. I’d hate to see anyone get blind-sided.

Midland’s Dresch going into softball hall of fame
By John Kennet
of the Midland Daily News

Midland’s Gary Dresch was on his way to becoming a professional baseball player when an inopportune injury forced him to switch sports.

But the change turned into a boon which, 44 years later, has culminated in his election to the Michigan Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame.

“I had been drafted by the New York Yankees,” said Dresch, 61. “But in 1965 during my senior year in high school, I broke my shoulder playing football. At that point, the Yankees dropped me.”

This Saturday, at the Midland Holiday Inn, Dresch will be recognized for his outstanding abilities on the diamond as he is inducted into the MASA Hall of Fame. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m.

“The award means everything,” said Dresch. “All the travel, playing and coaching for 25 years was worth it.”

Love of softball ran in the Dresch family, and Gary’s first exposure to the sport came at a young age.

Player-coach key to Southern success

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

From the Otago Daily Times (New Zealand)

Player-coach key to Southern success
By Alistair McMurran

Player-coach Marty Gray will play a key role in the Southern Pride team that is keen to stamp its mark on the national men’s league in Auckland at the weekend.

It is Gray’s second year in the role and he wants the team to improve on its dismal showing last year, when it failed to win a game.

“I believe we have enough talent to win some games this year,” Gray said from Nelson yesterday.

Provinces in the Southern Pride franchise are Otago, Southland, Marlborough and Nelson.

This makes it difficult to develop combinations, as it is impossible for the team to practise together outside game weekends.

“It will take a huge collective effort from our team to reach the play-offs,” Gray said.

But it is not impossible – Southern Pride made the play-offs in 2006.

Auckland, with its team of eight current or former Black Sox players in its 13-member squad, has won the league for the past two years.

It beat Wellington in last year’s final.

The team is spearheaded by player-coach Donny Hale and pitchers Heinie Shannon and Thomas Cameron.

There is also experience in the Canterbury, Hutt Valley and Wellington teams.

The league is contested over three weekends, with double round-robin games in the first two and then the finals.

The second weekend of games for the men will be in Christchurch on January 31 and February 1 and the finals weekend is scheduled for Hutt Valley on February 28.

This weekend’s round robin games in Auckland will give an indication of the strength of the Southern Pride team.

A lot depends on the ability of Gray, who has pitched for the Black Sox for the last 18 years and is the veteran of the New Zealand softball scene.

The five draft players in the team are Casey Eden (Auckland) who is the catcher, pitcher Richie Clarke (Hutt Valley), third base Haizley Martin (Wellington), and Auckland rookies Carlos Te Kawa (short stop) and Jamie Matiu (outfielder).

A key player in the team is Nigel Kelly (Nelson) who has played in four of the eight years the national league has been played.

There are three Otago players in the team and one of them is outfielder Chris Anderson (Alexandra), who is one of the five rookies in the Southern Pride squad.

The Dunedin players in the team are Scott Cartwright and Daniel Tarapi.

Giesbrecht gets shot at coveted world softball title

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

From the Winnepeg Free Press

[Winnepeg, Manitoba, Canada] – Rob Giesbrecht of Landmark has been named to the national men’s softball team, which will compete in the 2009 ISF Senior Men’s World Championship set for July 17-26 in Saskatoon.

Giesbrecht, an honoured member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, has been a national senior men’s team player since 2003 but this will be his first time challenging for a world title since he helped Canada’s national junior men’s softball team win a world championship in 1993.

“This is unbelievable, this is the highest level we can play because we’re not in the Olympics and this is the biggest even for men’s softball so to be on this team means a lot to me,” said Giesbrecht, 34, a teacher at Landmark Collegiate.

Canada’s senior men competed in the 2004 world championship but Giesbrecht was unable to participate due to his teaching commitment. In 2003, he helped Canada win a gold medal in men’s softball at the Pan Am Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and in 2007 he was on the the Canadian team that won silver at the Pan Am Championships in Mexico.

“It’s always been on my mind to go for this ultimate goal and now I have that chance,” Giesbrecht said. “It’s the last major title that I’m after because I’ve won Canadian, world junior, Pan Am and different club championships but this is the one that I really covet!”

Giesbrecht has been a member of the Vancouver Grey Sox senior men’s team since 2005 and won a Canadian championship title with the team in 2007. He has signed with them again for 2009, which means flying to Vancouver most weekends throughout the summer to play ball. His wife Michelle and son Luke, five, often accompany him.

Giesbrecht also won an Allan Cup in senior men’s hockey with the 2003 Ile des Chenes North Stars.

Former Black Sox Namana set to make Giants return

By Gary Caffell

[Masterson, Wellington, New Zealand] – Former Black Sox Malcolm Namana will be returning to his old stamping grounds when he plays for Giants in their double header men’s softball matches with Cardinals at South Park, Masterton tomorrow.

Namana was a member of the Giants club back in the late 1980s before moving over the hill where he has played for such clubs as Totara Park, Cardinals and Poneke-Kilbirnie.

He had a season off last year but with longtime friend Tony Nixon being coach of Giants he expressed an interest in joining up with them in 2008-09, and Giants were only too happy to oblige.

Nixon and Namana actually played at club level together for both Giants and Totara Park and in 2000 they were both part of the US-based winning side at the National Softball Association world series in South Carolina.
