News Story on Derek Mayson

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

This story ran last week, during the Senior Canadians in Saskatoon. Though that tournament has concluded, we thought this story on one of the West Coast’s finest players was worth sharing.

With Mayson as clutch, Grey Sox hit second gear

If the bases are loaded with two outs and the winning run at third base, Vancouver Grey Sox coach John Stuart knows exactly who he’d like at the plate.

His first pick would be young Derek Mayson, a member of Canada’s national men’s softball team and four-year veteran with the defending national champion Grey Sox.

Mayson, 24, can do as much in the clutch as anybody gathered in Saskatoon this week for the 2008 Ramada Canadian senior A men’s fastpitch championship.

“Of all the guys I’ve coached over the years, he’s the guy I want there with two out and the bases loaded,” Stuart said Tuesday afternoon after watching the Grey Sox blank the Horse Lake, Alta., Thunder 3-0 at Bob Van Impe Stadium.

“I’m confident in Derek. He’s definitely a key member of our batting lineup. I feel he’s one of the top five hitters in Canada. He’s a threat to do anything. He can lay it down, he hits the long ball and he hits the ball hard. Even if he hits the ball hard on the ground, he usually finds a hole or hits somebody hard and he still gets on base. He’s a very patient hitter.

Centennials bronzed at Canadians
By Times-Journal Staff

The St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials finished the Canadian Senior Men’s Fastpitch Championships on the podium with the bronze medal.

In an all-Ontario encounter, the Jarvis Gamblers blanked St. Thomas 4-0 Sunday to move on to the final against the host Saskatoon Aspen Interiors Black Sox.

Jarvis pitcher Paul Koert tossed a three-hitter while striking out eight batters. Scott Wager took the loss for St. Thomas allowing five hits, one base on balls and three earned runs in the first two innings.

Dale Levy, with two hits, and Tyler Lessard accounted for the Centennials’ offence.

Two days earlier, St. Thomas had edged Jarvis 2-1 on home runs by Mark Coleman and Brad Robinson to advance to the final four.

Jarvis finished first in the 10-team round robin with an 8-1 record, while St. Thomas tied for fourth place at 4-5.

In a game that put the winner directly in the final, Aspen Interiors scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to squeeze by St. Thomas 4-3.

Coleman had two of the five Centennials hits and scored a pair of runs.

Pitcher Todd Martin suffered the loss despite working a complete-game five-hitter and striking out 15 batters.

Aspen Interiors shut out Jarvis 2-0 to win the championship.

Trevor Ethier tossed a complete-game three-hitter, allowing no walks.

Aspen Rules at Canadian Senior Men’s

Monday, September 1st, 2008

From the host committee’s point of view, it was an exclamation point to an outstanding week of competition as the Aspen Interior Black Sox won the Canadian Senior “A” Men’s fastpitch softball championship Sunday, blanking the Jarvis, Ontario Gamblers 2-0 at Bob Van Impe Park.

Tournament M-V-P Trevor Ethier allowed just three hits in the final and got run support in the second and fifth inning as Aspen reclaimed the title they last won in 2004. Derrell Joy and Dean Holoein drove in the Aspen runs. They won their last six games of the week after finishing second to Jarvis in the 10-team round-robin preliminaries with a 7-2 record.

Jarvis Still on Top at Sr. Canadians

Canadian Men’s Fastpitch Championship Back on Track After Rain

Jarvis Ontario is still the team to beat entering the final day of round-robin play at the Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championships…

The lone team that can bump them from top spot in the round-robin are the host Aspen Interiors. But it won’t be easy as Aspen will be on the diamond three times today to make up the washed out Tuesday schedule.

Yesterday, Jarvis won both their games 3-2 over Camrose and 6-1 over Horse Lake. Aspen, however, were upset 3-2 by PEI in one of four major upsets on the day. They did rebound, however, to top St. Thomas and the Polyplus Diamondbacks. The loss for the Diamondbacks was their second in three games on the day. They are now in 8th place at 2-and-4.

The other Saskatchewan entry, Bruno, split their games and are in 9th place at 2-and-5.

Sr. Canadians Get Underway Sunday

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

The Men’s Senior Canadians get underway Sunday in Saskatoon, Canada.
Click the logo for the official website.

You can find great coverage of this tournament at Al’s Fastball, courtesy of newly minted HALL OF FAMER, Al Doran.

We were pleased to be on hand for Al Doran’s induction to the ISC Hall of Fame on Sunday, August 10, 2008, and have some video footage of both the presentation speech of Larry Lynch and acceptance speech of Al Doran, which wel will be posting to YouTube shortly.

Editor’s notes:
The term “senior” has a different connotation north of the border. It means their top division, as contrasted with the ASA’s use of the term for 50-and-over players. NAFA, thankfully, as least refers to the elder statesmen still playing the game as “Masters”.

There is also no truth to the rumor that the Sr. Canadians were being canceled, due to the fact that the ISC World Tournament final featured the two top Canadian teams there, Kitchener and Aspen 🙂
