Vancouver, BC

The 7th Annual edition of the Vancouver Challenge Mens FP tournament concluded this past Sunday afternoon, with the host Grey Sox defeating the Pueblo, CO Bandits in the final game by a score of 4 – 0. This year’s tournament proved to be another success. Over the course of 3 days the consistent large crowds of fastpitch enthusiasts were treated to some high quality team and individual performances. Mother nature also cooperated throughout the event with seasonable summer temperatures at South Memorial Park, and despite a forecast for rain on Sunday, weather was a non factor throughout the weekend.

The final order of finish was as follows: Champions – Vancouver Grey Sox, Runner Up – Pueblo, CO Bandits, 3rd – Bakersfield, CA Taylor Farms Lumberkings, 4th -Horse Lake, AB Thunder 5th -Camrose, AB Fury, 6th – Vancouver South Hill Giants, 7th – Vernon, BC DC Arrows, 8th – Portland, OR DeMarini.

Individual game scores with details have been posted via Al’s site and are also contained with our team website.

As well with the victory the Grey Sox have qualified for the 2009 ISC World Tournament in Quad Cities, set for August 14 – 23, 2009.

Also kudos to George Morneau (father of Justin Morneau – Minnesota Twins) who once again went out of his way to assist the event in any way possible including personally selling 50/50 tickets.

* Once again very large crowds on each day, reminding us what makes being at the ball park so special on a nice summer’s day.

* A good balanced field of teams, who for the most part were evenly matched and used the event as a final tune up prior to the ASA, ISC World Tournament and the Softball Canada Senior Mens FP Nationals.

* An excellent and cooperative crew of umpires whose commitment to the sport was so evident and very much appreciated. Led by tournament UIC -Bob Henning, who successfully assembled and coordinated a very experienced, skilled crew of umpires from many parts of North America and the World. The tournament umpiring crew consisted of the following; Bob Henning (Surrey, BC), John Ribalkin (North Vancouver, BC), Michael Track (Richmond, BC), Tim Lederman (Coquitlam, BC), John Irvine (Edmonton, AB), Rick Leche (Cloverdale, BC), Frankie Billingsley (Edmonton, AB), Al Strang (Richmond, BC), Ricco Powers (Victoria, BC), Don Martin (Coquitlam, BC), Ron Brinkman (Appelton, WI), Greg Pohl (St. Louis, MO), Dan Young (Surrey, BC), Kevin Wallace (Shipman, IL) and Patricia Hamamato (Sao Palo, Brazil)

* A talented crew of statiscians and scorekeepers who maintained the game records and shared them with the softball world in an expeditious manner via the tournament website and Al’s Fastball List and Fastpitchwest.

* Sincere thanks to our partners South Hill Sports Association for co – operating the event. As well of course to our participating teams, 5 of which were first time visitors to the Vancouver Challenge. Special acknowledement to the Pueblo Bandits, California Lumberkings, Vernon Arrows, Camrose Fury and the Vancouver South Hill Giants for their first time participation. As well thanks to Portland DeMarini and the Horse Lake Thunder for continuing our ongoing partnership by returning to Vancouver and playing in this event.

The 8th Annual Edition of the Vancouver Challenge will proceed in 2009, but will require a change from its traditional date of the last weekend in July, due to the 2009 ISF Mens World Championship being conducted in Saskatoon, SK from July 17 – 26. Watch for a more formal announcement to come from us in the weeks ahead confirming the weekend chosen for the 2009 Vancouver Challenge.

Lumberkings at Vancouver Challenge

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Three Round Robin Games Saturday

The California Lumberkings will get a look at some of the world’s best teams in Vancouver, Canada this weekend at the Vancouver Challenge. The Lumberkings are currently the # 1 ranked team in the ISC II division as they gear up for a run at the the ISC II Tournament of Champions title in Appleton August 10-13, 2008. The Lumberkings narrowly missed the top spot last year, making it to the championship game before falling to the TNT squad of South Lebanon, PA. The Lumberkings will be missing a few of their regulars, this weekend though. Says Lumberking’s skipper, David Weldin:

“This weekend is going to be a tough weekend for us. We are missing 4 guys from our lineup. We should be able to get a lot of guys some at bats to prepare for the ToC in 3 weeks. We are going to have to play smart fundamental softball this weekend.”

Here is the schedule for the Lumberkings at the Vancouver Challenge, who will be in the “Blue” pool, with the Camrose, AB Fury, Portland, OR DeMarini, and Vernon, BC DC Arrows.

Event hosted by the tough Grey Sox squad

Some of the top men’s softball teams in the world will be at South Memorial Park this weekend for the seventh annual Vancouver Challenge Men’s Fastpitch Tournament.

The tournament is hosted by the Vancouver Grey Sox, the defending Canadian champions and a team that’s ranked at No. 9 in the world by the International Softball Congress.

The Grey Sox, 29-6 this season, are coming off a four-game Super Series sweep of Portland DeMarini last weekend and are gearing up for the ISC World Championship Aug. 9-16 in Kimberly, Wis.

He’s the owner of a 13-1 record with the Grey Sox this season, and could end up facing Darren Zack, a future Hall of Famer who’s hurling for Alberta’s Horse Lake Thunder, the 11th-ranked club by the ISC.

The eight-team tournament includes Portland DeMarini, the Bakersfield Lumberkings, Pueblo Bandits, Camrose Fury, Vernon and the Vancouver South Hill Giants.

Leading the Grey Sox at the plate are Canadian national team infielder/outfielder Rob Giesbrecht of Manitoba, national team pitcher/infielder Derek Mayson of North Vancouver, outfielder Brian Abrey of Richmond and catcher Kevin Rasmussen from Seattle.

Besides Zack, the Thunder have former Canadian national team pitcher Sean Whitten and Karl Gollan, a New Zealander pitcher who was the 2007 ISC MVP.

The tourney starts at 6:30 p.m. today. Play begins at 8 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday with the final set for 2 p.m. on Sunday.

South Memorial Park is on 41st Ave. between Fraser and Knight streets. Admission is $5 per day or $10 for a tournament pass.

25 Home Runs on the Weekend for the Abbotsford Swingfest

Swingwest…BC Champs!

Abbotsford Swingwest’s weekend in Chilliwack both started and ended with a bang…Brad Avery hit a lead off HR to start the tournament on Friday Nite and Josh Wiens hit a walk off HR to capture the Provincial Championship on Sunday afternoon.

HR’s were certainly a big part of the weekend for Swingwest as they hit 25 as a team:

J. Wiens (5) H. Wiens (5) Avery (3) Wellington (3) Riesinger (3) Hawk (3) Holt (1) Folster (1) Josephson (1)

Swingwest had a potent batting line-up all wknd, which consistently produced both timely hits and runs. Josh Wiens was a stand out as he swung a hot bat all wknd and was named top batter of the tournament. The defense was strong all wknd as well, especially from guys like Eric Riesinger and Ben Josephson in the infield along with some sensational catches from Ryan Hawk in the outfield.

Swingwest also enjoyed exceptional pitching from Rob Johnson who pitched 10 strong innings in the semi final leading the way in a dramatic extra innings victory, he also got the win in the gold metal game and received the top pitcher award.

Scores:

Game 1: SW 11 – DC Arrows 0 (5 innings)

WP: Harv (B. Mac) LP: Vaughn (Snowman)

Game 2: SW 16 – Kelowna 10 (7 innings)

WP: R. Johnson (B. Mac) LP: Kunz (Sutherland, Blanliel)

Game 3: SW 5 – Slammers 0 (7 innings)

WP: Harv LP: Beck (Webster)

Game 4: SW 6 – Kamloops 3 (10 innings)

WP: R. Johnson LP: Haldane

Final 1: SW 12 – Giants 17 (7 innings)

WP: Wollard (Bish started) LP: Harv (B. Mac)

Final 2: SW 16 – Giants 0 (3 innings)

WP: R. Johnson LP: Wollard

This was the ultimate finish to a successful season for the Abby club, after finishing 2nd in Kelowna and 1st in Kamloops this year in other Sr. B tourney’s. They will now look at possibly competing at the ISC II’s next season in Wisconsin.

Chilliwack and the Vancouver Grey Sox did an outstanding job of hosting not only the Sr Mens Provincials this wknd, but the Sr Womens Provincials as well.

USA Men’s National Team Concludes 3 Nations Challenge with loss to Japan

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan — The USA Men’s National Team closed the 3 Nations Challenge in Saskatoon, SK on Sunday afternoon with a 9-3 loss to Japan. Team USA played well holding a lead for the first four innings of the game. The game was played in cool rainy conditions and included two rain delays of over one hour. Team USA finished the tournament at 0-5.

“Even though our won loss record does not show it, this was a highly successful trip for the team,” said USA head coach Pete Turner. “We brought a developmental team to Canada with a lot of young hitters and pitchers. We were competitive with the Japanese and Canadian teams that will be participating in next years World Championships.”

The U.S. opened the game with three runs in the first on walks to Chase Turner Stockton, Calif.) and Kyle Magnusson (Salt Lake City, Utah), and then a three-run line drive off the scoreboard by Frank DeGroat, Jr. (Ringwood, N.J.).

Starting pitcher Travis Price (Corona, Calif.) held the Japanese through the first three innings giving up only a solo home run in the bottom of the third. The Japanese tied the game in the fourth on two singles and a walk combined with a throwing error by the Americans.

Price gave up two more runs in the fifth before giving way to relief pitcher Cody Thomson (Herriman, Utah). Team USA had great scoring chances in the third and sixth inning, but a lack of timely hitting and great defense by the Japanese held the Americans scoreless. Magnusson led the Americans again going 2-for-2 and ended the tournament hitting .510. Catcher DeGroat Jr. also went 2-for-3 with all three USA RBI.

The Americans will conduct a try out camp this fall for the 2009 National Team that will compete in next years ISF Men’s World Championships to be held in Saskatoon, SK..

Team Canada won the 3 Nations Challenge with a 1-0 win over Japan on Sunday evening.
