Snapper Shootout This Weekend in Niagara Falls

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

The Snapper Shootout goes this weekend with several top-ranked ISC II teams looking to get an early season feel for where they stand. The Snappers and Elora Brewers were co-champions last year as rain washed out the finals. With the addition of ISC pitching, the results could be skewed somewhat, but as always this time of year in Niagara, look for some great fastball and the beginning of some new rivalries.

Watch The Deuce and Al’s Fastball for results all weekend.

This year’s tournament will have 16 teams, grouped into four pools of four teams each.

Lumberkings Split Exhibition Pair in Canada

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

The California Lumberkings split an exhibition doubleheader Thursday night in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, dropping the opener to the host Niagara Snappers, then winning the nightcap, 4-2 over the GHFL All-Stars. The games were charity fundraisers for Melissa Brideau, (Click here for details).

Click here to listen to an interview with Jason Paylove about the fund raiser.

The Lumberkings traveled east this week to the Niagara Falls area for the “Snapper Shootout”, arriving early Thursday, so they could participate in the exhibition games, organized by Dan Bernard of the Snappers, with a big assist from ISC II commish Blair Setford. who arranged the broadcasts on Ballparkradio, and publicized the event on his website, GHFL.ca. Blair enlisted lead announcer Kyle Smith and Snapper Matt Bedrosian to do color. (Blair broadcast the first game, then played third base in the second game for the GHFL squad, notching a base hit for good measure).

In the opener, the Snappers shut down the potent Lumberking offense, in a game that could easily have been the ISC II championship last summer in Kitchener. The Snappers lost a heartbreaking, extra-inning game to eventual winner TNT of Pennsylvania in the semis, or they would have met the Lumberkings in the finals. The Lumberkings went on to finish second, while the Snappers tied for third with A-1 Taylor Farms, of California. Thursday night’s game saw different rosters for both clubs than those which played in the 2007 ISC II, but a well matched game nonetheless. In the end, it was the Snapper pitching that made the difference, shutting out the Lumberkings, no easy feat.

In the nightcap, an all-star cast from the Golden Horseshoe Fastball League played the Lumberkings dead even into the top of the 7th inning, until Gerry Kennedy hit a three run homer to break the 1-1 tie, enroute to a 4-2 win. Kennedy was brought in by the Lumberkings to fill the big shoes of All-World DH, Jon Nimmo, (who hit several big home runs in last year’s T of C). Gerry Kennedy, or “GK” as his teammates call him, showed Thursday night that the shoes were a perfect fit. Kennedy was named the game’s most valuable player.

The Lumberkings will head down the road from St. Catherines, Ontario to Niagara Falls, Ontario, for this weekend’s Snapper Shootout. Watch this blog for scores this weekend.

Lumberkings in All-Star Charity Doubleheader

Friday, May 16th, 2008

Just an update on the fundraiser fastball exhibition games that will be taking place at Lancaster Park on June 5th. First game gets underway at 7pm and pits the Niagara Snappers against the California Lumberkings, second game begins at 9pm with the GHFL all-stars hosting the Lumberkings.

A Ball Park Radio (www.ballparkradio.com) broadcast of both games is in the final stages and looks to be on track. Keep checking for more updates. We encourage all players, fans and coaches not only from the GHFL but from all fastball leagues to come down for a night of fastball in one of the most beautiful parks in Ontario and help support a good cause. Storm’s Deli will be on hand serving up hot food and soft drinks and you can purchase tickets to be used to bid on donated items (including a brand new Wilson glove and an Easton ball bag and many more). Also, both the California Lumberkings and the GHFL will be creating T-Shirts to commemorate the night, these will be available to purchase as well.

Proceeds from the gate and several activities at the parkincluding a 50-50 draw, silent auction and souvenir sales will be donated to Melissa Brideau. Melissa is the long time girlfriend of Niagara Falls Furyplayer Tommy Watkinson who has played ball in the Niagara Falls Men’s League for the past 15 years. Melissa is stricken with a very aggressive from of Multiple Sclerosis. Melissa is 35 years old and has reached a point in her illness where a wheelchair or scooter have become her source of mobility. Melissa is having no luck with North American treatment and is traveling to Venezuela to seek treatment from world renowned specialist Dr.Yepetz utilizing rainforest natural therapy. As one can imagine this is a verycostly endeavor but one that needs to be explored now. Dr. Yepetz has successfully reversed the effects of MS in many patients and Melissa feels this type of treatment is one of the few remaining options available for her. If treatments go well, Melissa will in all probability be revisiting Venezuela multiple times.

California and Niagara will both be taking part in the 6th annual Snapper Shootout which runs from Friday June 7th- Sunday June 9th. Both teams will be competing along with 14 others to claim more than $3500 in prize money. Previous winners of the Shootout include Niagara Snappers (2004, 2005 winners, 2007 co-winner), The Rise (2006 winner) and the Elora Brewers (2007 co-winners). Another very strong field is set for this year’s tournament.

Vancouver Grey Sox Clinic, Exhibition at Cloverdale, B.C.

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

(click logo for official team website)

[Cloverdale, BC] – The Vancouver Grey Sox opened the 2008 season on Saturday as the guests of the Cloverdale Minor Softball Association. Our gracious hosts put on a first class event that included a free clinic for all youngters registered in the local softball association. Grey Sox coaches and personnel provided their time and talents to the clinic. It was very refreshing and encouraging to see the many young faces at the grass roots of the sport still showing that youthful enthusiam, energy and eagerness. We were most impressed by the large turnout, festive atmosphere and the amazing softball facility that the community is blessed with.

At the conclusion of the clinic, the Grey Sox participated in a scheduled exhibition game vs the Vancouver Firefighters Senior B squad. Lefthanded pitcher Mike Piechnik (Victoria, BC) started the season in fine form for the Grey Sox tossing a no hitter, with no walks, and lost a perfect game opportunity due to two Grey Sox errors. Shortstop Brian Ree (Gresham, OR) and Catcher Kevin Rasmussen (Everett, WA) paced the Grey Sox offense with homeruns as the Sox prevailed 5 – 0. Rob Johnson was the losing pitcher for the Firefighters with relief from Craig Pidcock in the 5th.

Once again our sincere thanks to the Cloverdale Minor Softball Association and the tireless efforts of Jim Ullock for putting together a great event and day, and for being first class hosts. Softball is certainly alive and well in this community.

Next action for the Grey Sox is May 10 and 11 when the team will travel to Kamloops, BC to participate in another minor clinic and will take on a local Kamloops squad in a 4 game super series.
