Jr D’Backs upset Scarborough

SUMMERSIDE – After making an error in the top of the seventh that allowed Scarborough Wolverines (Ont 1) to cash in the tying run and make it 1-1, Colby Bierle used his ball smarts and speed to race from first base all the way home to score the winning run in a 2-1 upset win over the previously undefeated Wolverines. Earl Ghostkeeper (2-3) drove home pinch runner Codie Gross with the game’s first run. The Wolverines countered in the top of the seventh when Ryan Jaynes brought home Brad Fogal when Bierle fumbled the ball to allow the game to tie.

When he had the chance to make amends for his mistake, Bierle (1-4) put it into high gear. “When I the coach waving me that just made me beared down even more and run that much harder,” Bierle said after the thrilling win Barry Sparvier, whose two home runs and three RBI keyed an earlier 5-4 win over Elmira Advance Millwright Tuesday afternoon, was thrilled to get this win over their rivals from Scarborough.

“Every year we’ve played they have beaten us in the five years I have played Junior AAA ball,” he said. “I was jacked for this game. Everybody was.” However, Sparvier knows the Diamondbacks will need to enjoy this tonight and regroup Wednesday morning for another big game, this one against the Newfoundland and Labrador Kelly’s Pub Canadians. “We can’t stay too high for long as we still have to show up tomorrow,” he said. Brady Woods allowed just four hits and fanned five batters in picking up the win. He credited his team with the win.

“Today was the game of my life,” he said about the upset win. Andrew Putham (2-3), Jaynes (1-3, RBI) and Dale Broadway (1-3) were the batters to get hits for the Wolverines. Matt Leahy wasn’t as dominant as he had in previous outings, going six and two third innings allowing 10 hits, walking one and striking out six.

NL powers over NB 9-2 at JR MEN’S

Grand slam, three-run blast power NL over NB at Junior Men’s

SUMMERSIDE – A grand slam and three run blast capped off a seven run, third inning as Kelly’s Pub Canadians of Newfoundland and Labrador routed New Brunswick representative Miramichi Vics 9-2 in day two play at the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior Men’s fast pitch championships here in Summerside.
The damage got done in the third after a pair of walks first to Felix Squires then shortstop Justin Gill (1-4) followed with a single. Stephen Strapp (0-2) was then walked to load the bases bringing NL slugger Jon Kane to the plate.

Kane (1-2) made no mistake tagging NB pitcher Jeremy Regan for a long home run that went about 300 feet, scoring all four runs. The onslaught continued when third basemen Shane O’Brien (0-1, walk) was hit by a pitch and then Matt Hill (0-1) was walked. Ken Gosse (1-3, ) sent the first offering from relief pitcher Brandon Gorman out of the park to make it 8-0.

NL pinch hitter Mark Lewis would be walked in the fourth and later score on an error by Vic center-fielder Matt Houcy for the defending champions final run of the game. New Brunswick got their first two runs of the tournament, scoring one each in the fourth and fifth innings. The Vics had nine hits off NL starter Wayne Bruce while NL had just six hits.

Twins win men’s fastpitch opener

SUMMERSIDE — Pretty and text-book softball it was not; exciting it certainly was. Welcome to the opening game for the host P.E.I. Source for Sports Twins and Saskatoon Diamondbacks from Saskatchewan at the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada national junior men’s fastpitch championship Sunday afternoon. The two teams combined for seven errors and 13 unearned runs in the Twins’ 13-9 victory.

“It was a wild one,’’ said Twins head coach Scott Bridges. “Both teams made some mistakes, both teams hit the ball and it was one of those games that whoever persevered the longest was going to win. We showed a lot of heart.’’ The Twins, who trailed 9-6 after four complete innings, scored six runs in the top of the sixth for a 12-9 lead. Pinch-hitter John Arsenault drew a leadoff walk, Alex MacDonald walked and Devan Praught was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Colin Dillon, who singled and scored standing up on a three-base error in the fourth inning, reached second on a throwing error that cleared the bases and tied the game 9-9. Ryan Gallant followed with a single to put runners on the corners, and Matt Dawson scored Dillon on an infield groundout. Jeremy McKinnon, who later scored on an error, singled to plate Gallant. MacDonald hit a leadoff home run in the seventh inning to close out the scoring. “Our bats were tremendous,’’ said Bridges. “To score 13 runs in the junior nationals in one game is impressive, and they’re a pretty good team.’’ Jon Venoit earned the pitching win in relief of starter Donnelly Archibald. Pierre Richard recorded the save. Richard worked two scoreless innings, allowing only a two-out single in the seventh. Jeremy Kenny took the loss.

“Saskatchewan was ranked fourth coming in and we were ranked seventh or eighth,’’ said Bridges. “We can compete with these teams, no question, and we just have to play seven innings.’’ The Twins scored four runs in the top of the first inning to get the enthusiastic crowd at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Volunteer Field into the game. But Saskatoon responded with five runs in their first at-bat. Saskatoon led 7-4 after three innings. Each team scored twice in the fourth. “The message after the game was that there are going to be lots of peaks and valleys throughout the week, and we can’t get too excited or down too much,’’ said Bridges. “They were like yo-yos in that dugout today (Sunday).’’ Seven of Saskatoon’s runs were unearned while the Twins scored six unearned runs. Bridges says errors are part of junior ball. Next up for the P.E.I. Source for Sports Twins is the Scarborough Wolverines, the Ontario 1 representative. The two teams will clash tonight. Game time at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Volunteer Field is 8 p.m.

Working hard for fun
Tournament director Paul Gallant says there are many small details that need to be covered when putting on an event like the Canadian junior men’s fastpitch championship, which begins this Sunday in Summerside

SUMMERSIDE — The first tournament Paul Gallant ever organized was the national junior men’s fastpitch softball championship in 1983.

“Twenty-four years later and here we are again,” said Gallant, the tournament director.

Sunday at 11 a.m., the Causeway Bay national junior men’s fastpitch championship begins in Summerside.

“It lasts eight days,” said Gallant. “We’re hoping to get about 20,000 people going through the park during the tournament.”

There are nine teams entered in the tournament, including the host Summerside Source For Sports Twins.

There are no enteries from Manitoba, Alberta or British Columbia, but there is one each from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Saskatchewan. There are three teams representing Ontario.

Gallant said families travelling with ball players tend to make a vacation out of these tournaments.

“There will be a visitor information booth set up at the ball field for people who want to know things like where to go sailing.”

Summerside was awarded the tournament late in 2005, beating out two other communities.

Since then, Gallant has been getting ready for the event.

“I could be on the phone with you for hours describing the minor details that go on behind the scenes in order to organize a ball tournament.”

Organizing volunteers, making sure the ball field meets softball Canada standards, getting sponsors, setting up travel times and putting together opening and closing ceremonies are only some of the things he needs to do to prepare for the tournament.

Gallant is also talking with the teams every day to make sure they are informed about things like transportation schedules.

So far, everything is going smoothly, but Gallant said there are always minor issues they have to deal with when the tournament starts.

“I don’t drink . . . but I usually have a beer at the end of each tournament to celebrate that it’s over,” he said with a laugh.

“I do this because I love it.”

Saskatoon Needs One More Win for Masters Title

Written by Evan Wright – 600 Action News-Local First

The Saskatoon Allied Denture Clinic Masters await a winner in the final of the Western Canadian Master Men’s Fastpitch Championship from Portage la Prairie.

Saskatoon scored some redemption against the Kelowna Andre’s Masters in the 1-versus-2 page playoff with a 10-1 victory. Saskatoon’s lone round robin loss was to the same Andre’s Masters.

Now, Kelowna must play the host team from Portage, with the winner securing a date with Saskatoon in the final. According to tournament rules, the first team to qualify for the final (Saskatoon) needs to win once in the championship match. However, the second team to qualify (either Portage or Kelowna) must win twice.
