[KITCHENER, ONTARIO, CANADA] – In case you haven’t already heard, Waterloo Region is the centre of the fastball universe.

This, from promoter Duncan Matheson who — along with his volunteer army of fastball foot soldiers — will bring the men’s world club team championships to Kitchener for the second straight year.

“You got so many people around here that are fastball nuts. They put so much into the game because they love the game,” Matheson said at yesterday’s news conference which kicked off a season that will conclude with the International Softball Congress world tournament in Kitchener from Aug. 10-18.

For Halifax native Mark Smith, the head coach of the Canadian senior men’s fastball team, this area’s fastball talent, proximity to Toronto’s airport, world-class facilities and hospitality are hard to beat.

“All fastball roads lead you here,” said Smith, in town with the national team this week for a test series against the three-time defending world champs from New Zealand.

The Kiwis warmed up for that series last night in Tavistock, handing the Kitchener Hallman Twins a 13-3 defeat in the opening game of a doubleheader.

This summer, the ISC worlds, the granddaddy of senior men’s club team tournaments, will be held at Kitchener’s Peter Hallman Ball Yard for the third time in six years.

The ISCs also include an intermediate men’s competition (the Tournament of Champions) to be played in Kitchener and Cambridge, a youth tournament and a skills clinic.

Waterloo Region and area boasts a season piled high with premier fastball events, organizers said, including the recently-completed Legends of Fastball Classic in Woodstock.

New Zealand national team infielder Jarrad Martin knows first-hand how much this sport matters to local fans.

While wearing the uniform of the two-time ISC champion County Materials of Marathon, Wis., last summer, he felt the wrath of local spectators at the Hallman Ball Yards.

“Last year, we (County) weren’t on the best side of the fans at a lot of times. We had to deal with the adversity and the hostile crowds. But the sport has a great following here,” said Martin, 34, an electrician from New Plymouth, New Zealand

Named the 2006 ISCs most valuable player, Martin will make a return trip to Kitchener in August, for the 2007 ISC worlds, as a member of the Broken Bow Gremlins of Albany, N.Y.

Smith, who has repeatedly brought Team Canada to Kitchener for training camps, will also guide Nova Scotia’s under-19 girls squad to Kitchener-Waterloo next month to train.

ISC world tourney organizers said that more than 50,000 fans are expected to watch the nine-day tournaments in Kitchener and Cambridge. About $7 million will be injected into the local economy, they said.

Some 600 volunteers will devote 14,000 hours to hosting the ISC worlds and Tournament of Champions.

“It’s fastball fever. People are going crazy about the game,” said Matheson, the 2007 ISC tourney’s chair.

At last year’s ISC worlds, 47,000 fans attended. The tourney netted a profit of $82,000, shared with seven local non-profit groups.

New Zealand Black Sox vs. Kitchener Hallman Twins

From Al Doran, of Al’s Fastball, on the scene for the New Zealand Black Sox Canadian tour:

The previous posts were done from my Blackberry at the park.

We hope to be on site in Orillia, Sebringville and Kitchener, Thur, Fri, and Sat and will do similar updates to this site, with more detailed updates later when we get home.

Tavistock, ON

The Black Sox vs Kitchener Hallman Twins in Tavistock Ontario.

The evening started off with an emotional presentation to local softball hero, Brian (Chubb) Stere. Stere, who was a walk on try out with the Waterloo Twins 16 years ago was an immediate
hit and after 16 years, the team is retiring their first number in their forty year history.

Larry Lynch, long time coach and friend to Stere made an powerful presentation to Brian in front of an estimated 800 strong crowd here in Tavistock. Stere received a jersey with his number 16
on it and received a standing ovation from his home town fans. Another local softball hero, Dan Yantzi threw out the first pitch to his long time catcher, Brian Stere.

So Cal Bombers vs. Vancouver Grey Sox

Thanks to Cesar Rodriguez for this info:

2007 Vancouver Exhibitions –

[VANCOUVER, B.C.] – We were in Vancouver this weekend, hoping to play two double headers with Vancouver on Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately the Pacific Northwest weather was not kind to us and Saturday was completely rained out. We were able get two good games in on Sunday morning and a shortened practice third game before having to leave.

In the first game, our hitters were very disciplined and while facing Nick Underhill, produced an 8-0 lead until late in the game. With Lucas Mata making his debut for us (and his first weekend of work), we let him finish the game and Vancouver mounted a bit of a comeback to finish at 8-3.

Mata pitched extremely well for his first session and while we allowed him 113 pitches this first game (a lot more than we usually look for in an early outing), we felt the work would be good for him. He tired a bit but certainly showed why he was one of the best in the world.

In the second game, we hit the ball well early and jumped to an early 3-0 lead off of Rick Smith. With Sean Whitten in the circle, we were pretty confident about the lead but Sean struggled a little with his drop ball and we didn’t play as sharply behind him as he needed at that time. Sean came out after 5 (90 pitches) at 3-3 and Tony Peeples relieved. In the 7th, Vancouver scratched out the go ahead run and we took the defeat.

We’d hoped to get a 3rd game in but due to flights and timing, we knew it would be shortened an our lineup would be compromised. We began the game and jumped out to a 5-0 lead off of Derek Mayson with all of our troops in place. Tony Peeples started and gave up a couple of runs and once had reached his pitch count (combined with the first appearance) we gave Mata the ball again (to get his work in), at 5-3. Vancouver brought in Underhill shortly thereafter.

In the 3rd inning we lost 4 players to flights, so with Potskin playing 2nd, Rodriguez SS, Whitten in RF and both Mata and Whitten hitting; we carried on. (We were even using coach Shick to run for the pitchers if they got on base). Vancouver rallied to tie the game and then we took the lead 7-5. In the final (5th) inning, Mata had two out with a runner on 3rd. A wild pitch from a tired Mata scored one for a 7-6 score. Then with a 2-2 count and two out, Doug Allen from Vancouver hit a home run to tie it up. Mata then got the 3rd out and we ended the event with a tie.

All in all, our pitchers got their work in, and while they were not as sharp as they will be, they just need to continue to get innings in order to get there – we know our pitching will be a real strength for us. Our hitters looked good. We scored 9 runs in the first two games against very strong pitchers and we incorporated some new plays and systems. We’re pleased that our work process is on track. We next play in Portland on the 23rd & 24th and will be missing a few players (Lalonde, Devine, Mata, Evely and perhaps Crawford) but expect to be strong contenders and continue our work on preparing for the WT.

Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader was rained out.

So Cal Bomber’s Coach in Vancouver News

Sunday, June 10th, 2007

From the Vancouver Sun

SHICK’S SUMMER SHTICK:

Long-time NHL referee Rob Shick, a Port Alberni native, is staying close to sport in the off-season. Shick is in his first year as an assistant coach with the SoCal Bombers men’s fastpitch team, which will be in Vancouver this weekend for a four-game exhibition series with the Vancouver Grey Sox at South Memorial Park.

The Bombers, 5-1 this season, are currently ranked No. 7 by the International Softball Congress, while the Grey Sox, 11-3, are No. 9. The teams will play twice on Saturday — 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. — and twice on Sunday — 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“Rob not only brings over 25 years of experience in professional sport to the table, but was an accomplished and highly respected ballplayer in Canada in his younger years,” says Bombers head coach Kelly McGiffin, himself a Port Alberni native. “He knows the game and he knows how the game should be played.”

And we suspect he won’t be caught getting in an umpire’s face or pulling up second base in a tantrum.

Other Canadians with the California team include C/OF Chad Ghostkeeper and IF/OF Evan Potskin, both of Prince George. Both play key roles with the Bombers, as do C Darren Box, OF Greg Crawford and pitchers Sean Whitten and Darrell Tilley, all from Alberta.

ISC II #1 Niagara Snappers were leading ISC II#10 Elora Brewers 3-2 in the top of the 5th inning when the rains arrived in Virgil, Ontario.

With little hope of the fields being playable within a reasonable time, the teams agreed to split the $2,800 in prize money.

Pitching for the Niagara Snappers was Dan Duemo with Todd Uhrig on the mound for the Brewers. Uhrig had homered in the bottom of the 4th to draw Elora to within one.

Congratulations to both teams on making it to the final and to the Snappers for putting on another first-class tournament.
