Merchants sold on Wagar
Ontario pitcher shuts down Black Bears with three-hitter

by TED CLARKE and SCOTT STANFIELD Citizen staff
Evan Potskin’s round-trip journey down the basepaths at Spruce City Stadium wasn’t enough for the Prince George Black Bears.

They needed a long-ball merry-go-round to contend with the Jarvis Merchants.

Scott Wagar did not give them that option in a 4-1 Merchants victory at the Canadian Senior Men’s Fastpitch Championship. The 32-year-old from Virgil, Ont., found his way into a zone the Black Bears rarely entered, on his way to a nine-strikeout, three-hit outing.

“He kept mixing it up, throwing a lot of off-speed pitches and keeping us off-balance,” said Potskin, the Black Bears shortstop, who cranked the first pitch he saw in the seventh inning over the left field fence.

Wagar is not an overpowering pitcher, but his deliveries kept the Prince George batters baffled and swinging at air. That’s just the way he planned it.

From our friend in PEI, Pat Healey:

Fawcetts falter late, lose to defending champs at Sr. Canadians

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – Through five innings, it appeared the Charlottetown Razzy’s Facwetts and St. Thomas Centennials were going to need extra innings here Thursday night at the 2006 Canadian Sr. Men’s softball championship. However, the defending champion Centennials had other things in mind scoring five times in the next two innings en route to a perfect 7-0 record with a 8-3 win. The loss dropped Charlottetown’s record to 2-5, and they will face the Vancouver Grey Sox, who many expected to be strong at these nationals, in their first playoff game Saturday at 11:30 a.m. (3:30 p.m. Atlantic) (more…)

Rob O’Brien had an early wake-up call Wednesday.

He had a job to do at Spruce City Stadium — putting the bats of the Saskatoon Aspen Interior Black Sox to sleep.

The 32-year-old St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials pitcher made quick work of the Black Sox at the Canadian Senior Men’s Fastpitch Championship as he faced just 18 batters over five innings in a 9-0 pasting. A master of the riseball, O’Brien rose to the occasion and struck out eight batters while allowing just three hits before the mercy rule kicked in.

ALBERTON — Outfielder Jeff Ellsworth of Alberton was not sounding the effects of sleep deprivation Wednesday afternoon.

“I didn’t sleep last night,” he said. And it was all because of a call he received Tuesday morning notifying him of his selection to Softball Canada’s 2006 senior men’s national team. (more…)

FAWCETTS LOSE HEARTBREAKER IN SEVENTH INNING
By Pat Healey

PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – The Charlottetown Fawcetts bats were strong, but Saskatoon Aspen Interior Black Sox Jason Hill came up big when he had to. With two out and the score tied 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, Hill (2-4) hit a Mike Bishop offering over the centerfield fence into the beer garden to win the thrilling game 6-5 dropping Charlottetown’s record to 2-2 here at the 2006 Canadian Senior Men’s fast pitch championships. Jeff Ellsworth of Alberton led the Fawcetts attack, going 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBI. Ellsworth’s ISC teammate with the Kegel Knights, Duane Clarkson, snapped his recent hitless slump as he went 4-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Also tops for the Fawcetts were Jason MacDonald (1-3, run scored) and Jason Blanchard (1-3). Mike Bishop suffered the loss going five innings in relief of starter Steve Langley, allowing two runs on five hits, walking one and fanning five.
