This Week in Fastball from Dennis Dosman

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

Another great issue of “This Week in Fastball” from our friend in Ontario Canada, Dennis Dosman. This one might be my favorite issue yet. See especially his discussion of the top teams in the ISC rankings, Jarvis, NY Gremlins and Kitchener. (scroll down, after the jump)

Happy Canada Day to everyone…and “Maz”….Happy Fourth!!!!

The big news is the results of the Legends of Fastball Classic at Peter Hallman this past weekend…..

Great to see good friends back at the Ball Yard watching some great fastball

The later date, the ten team format, the addition of the Junior Future of Fastball Division, all made for a very entertaining weekend…busy but entertaining…and fun….

The ISC rankings may take a bit of a rejigging in the next poll, but the fact remains that a lot of great teams were at Peter Hallman Ball Yard for a classic Legends of Fastball Classic.

Everyone at the park knew that the Kitchener Hallman RiverShark Twins were a great team, two ISC World titles the past two years, an Ontario OASA picked up at Hillside in Waterloo last year, and Canadian title won down the road in St Thomas, a couple of nice additions to the roster over the winter,

Everyone at the park wanted to see just how good this Jarvis team was going to be. A solid club last year, good run at the Canadian Senior Men’s last year in St Thomas and then the partnership announced a few weeks ago with Doc Simmon’s Broken Bow Travelers, Would those spiffy uniforms that Doc’s teams are famous for be filled with mojo or would it be talent but no drive

And everyone at the ball park knew that New York Gremlins looked great, they had a lot of quality, including hard hitting local favorite “Red” Levy, Paul Koert, Bill Hillhouse, Frank DeGroat, Landy Rodriguez….a solid team …

Eveyone at the ball park knew that Midland Explorers were going to be building a good club to challenge for the ISC World Championship being held in their ball park in Michigan with a few top quality signings…including KW favorite Craig Crawford.

And everyone at the ball park was wondering who in the world is the Chicago/NewYork Dominicana? Where did they come from…..lots of big names, but is there “any chemistry” Was the Midland tournament win a couple of weeks ago real?

Holoien, Newton turn Twins into contenders for fastpitch nationals

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

From the Victoria Star/Daily Gleaner

The Fredericton Coors Light Twins have officially joined the ranks of contenders by adding Dean Holoien and Bryan Newton to anchor their pitching staff at this summer’s Canadian senior men’s fastpitch nationals in Charlottetown.

If someone argues that Holoien, at 41, is “getting up there” in age, you can counter-point with the fact he was MVP at the ISC world championship as recently as last August. Newton has earned a reputation as a reliable workhorse and top seven or eight pitcher in the country. The addition of Newton was announced earlier.

But Newton alone wasn’t enough. No team can ride one arm all week – taxing weeks (often with rain delays or sweltering heat to contend with) where the eventual champion has to play up to 10 games to win it all.

So, in the ‘Go Big or Stay Home’ category, the Twins are bringing in Holoien – one of the most recognizable names in the game over the last two decades.

Holoien has been a member of four Canadian senior championship teams. In 2004, in fact, he pitched a no-hitter in the gold-medal final as the Saskatoon Aspen Black Sox beat the Vancouver Grey Sox 1-0 in St. Croix, N.S. Oh, yes, he also drove in the game’s only run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Holoien was on the Canadian national team from 1992 to 2009. He was phased out this year as part of a youth movement, but there’s no question he’s still an elite-level pitcher and – just as important at this level – hitter.

He brings the Twins instant credibility and respect. He helps team officials convince potential sponsors “Hey, look at us, we’re serious about taking a run at this. You can be a part of this and benefit from the exposure.”

Alas, Holoien also brings added pressure for Fredericton to produce.

In past nationals, many Fredericton entries were easily dismissed. Teams could afford to save their ace for a bigger opponent, using their third-best pitcher to hand the N.B. reps a loss.

Now Holoien and Newton might have to go head-to-head with the likes of Todd Martin, Sean Whitten and Frank Cox – well-established guns of the game.

So even the one-two punch of Holoien and Newton doesn’t guarantee the Twins success, but at least they’re now part of the contender conversation.

Ballparkradio at the 2010 Legends Fastball Classic

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Earlier today, we hinted that an announcement about Ballparkradio would be coming soon.

We are pleased to announce that Ballparkradio will be broadcasting on Sunday from the 2010 Legends Fastball Classic at Kitchener, Ontario, Canada.

Kyle Smith and Blair Setford will be on the air for two games Sunday, a semi-final and the championship game, set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Eastern, respectively. (10am and 12noon on the west coast). With the number 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6th ranked teams in the world, and many other top teams in this tournament, Sunday’s broadcasts figure to provide some exciting action.

Al’s Fastball is billing this one as the “Feature Tournament of the Week”. In the months leading up to the ISC World Tournament in Midland, Michigan, this one could well be the Feature Tournament of the summer. You won’t want to miss the finale of this one !

The main impediment to broadcasting from this tournametn has been the lack of a internet connection at Peter Hallman Ballyard. (the internet connection used at the ISC World Tournament in 2006 and 2007 is no longer there). Thanks to some legwork by Larry Lynch and other tournament officials, we’ll have the use of a USB wireless broadband connection (aka “internet stick” like the one we tested and used to broadcast the Best of the West tournament earlier this month. Kyle and I completed some preliminary testing this evening, with some additional testing to be done on Saturday. We’ll update the Ballparkradio website, our twitter feed, and notify Al’s Fastball to let you know we’re all systems go for Sunday.
