Indonesian men’s softball team heads to Canada despite financial constraints

Despite not being fully ready financially, the Indonesian senior men’s softball team ensures their participation in the World Men’s Softball Championship in Saskatoon , Saskatchewan , Canada , in order to maintain the country’s image.

“We have collected fund from the local softball community to cover the contingent’s airfare. We are 80 to 90 percent ready, financially, to depart to Canada ,” chairman of the Indonesian Baseball and Softball Association (PERBASASI) Gugun Yudinar told The Jakarta Post on Monday.

PERBASASI requires around Rp 900 million (US$81,818) to cover the expenses of sending the softball men’s team to Saskatoon.

A contingent of 17 players and six officials will depart Wednesday for the July 17-26 world championship. The country secured a place in the event for the first time, after finishing third in the 2006 Asian Championships in Japan behind the hosts and runner-up the Philippines .

If Indonesia is absent from the event, Gugun said, the Asian region would be given a penalty by losing a place in the next championship.

“That happened once to Africa . Thus, we don’t want to disgrace our country,” said Gugun.

He hoped for the additional financial assistance previously promised by the State Ministry for Youth Affairs and Sports.

Indonesia will have its first pitch against Puerto Rico on July 17. Due to merely two weeks of training preparation, Gugun is no longer aiming for a place in the top 10 teams as he previously hoped for.

“The realistic target is getting the experience to play there,” Gugun said.

The world championship is participated by 16 countries, divided into two groups. The Indonesian team is in Group B with Australia , Czech Republic, Argentina , Venezuela, South Africa , Puerto Rico, and Canada , while Group A consists of Cuba, Denmark, New Zealand, USA, Botswana, Great Britain , Japan, and Philippines.

Vancouver, BC

The 8th Annual edition of the Vancouver Challenge Mens FP tournament concluded Sunday evening, and was undoubtedly our most successful event to date. Over the course of 3 days the consistent large crowds of fastpitch enthusiasts were treated to some quality team and individual performances. Mother nature also cooperated throughout the weekend with seasonable summer weather for the first two days and although temperatures were considerably cooler on Sunday, the rain held off until the final out was completed.

The host Vancouver Grey Sox captured the event with a 10 -3 victory in the final game over the Japanese National Team.

Individual Tournament Awards were as follows:

Top Hitter – Hiraku Yokoyama, Team Japan .700 avg
Top Pitcher – Nick Underhill, Vancouver Grey Sox, 3W, 1.21 ERA, 26Ks
MVP – Derek Mayson, Vancouver Grey Sox, 1W, 1 Save, 1.00 ERA, 11Ks .545 batting avg, 4 3B, 7RBIS

Tournament Highlights:

* A very committed and dedicated volunteer group who worked long hours to execute the event. To the many people who staffed the gate, concession area, beverage gardens, groomed the fields etc. sold 50 /50 tickets and did everything possible to make the event happen we extend a special thanks.

* The largest 3 day crowds in the eight year history of the event, reminding us what makes being at the ball park so special on a nice summer’s day.

* A competitive field of teams, who for the most part were evenly matched, including three international national teams (Great Britain, Denmark and Japan) who used the event as tune up for the upcoming ISF World Championship.

* An excellent and cooperative crew of umpires, under the leaderhsip of UIC Bob Henning, whose commitment to the sport was so evident and very much appreciated.

* Sincere thanks to our partners South Hill Sports for co – operating the event.

All game results including round robin and playoff are enclosed below.

The Vancouver Grey Sox now take an 18 day break while the ISF World Championship is completed and will resume action in the month of August with stops at the ASAs in South Bend, Indiana, the ISC World Tournament in Quad Cities and then the Softball Canada National Championship in St. Thomas, Ontario.

Kiwis enjoying success, popularity overseas

It’s rare that any three-time defending world champions can walk down the streets of their hometowns without creating a stir. Yet the New Zealand Black Sox men’s fastball team might be bigger celebrities abroad than at home.

While the national team plays to packed houses in Canada and the U. S., fastball is far off the mainstream radar in New Zealand.

“The softball people at home recognize our players, but they’re the only ones, which is an unfortunate thing we have to deal with at home,” Kiwi team manager Wayne Small said prior to his side’s exhibition doubleheader with the Owen Sound Verge Senior Selects.

“Fastball has been in the decline, much like in Canada. We’re competing against cricket, which is a big national sport in New Zealand, and touch rugby, which is becoming more and more popular. Softball New Zealand is trying to develop new strategies to build the game.”

The New Zealand national team is playing 14 exhibition games in Ontario in preparation for the 2009 International Softball Federation world championship July 17 to 26 in Saskatoon.

The Ontario tour is a necessity for the Kiwis because it’s currently winter in New Zealand.

“We’ve had five of our boys playing offshore in Japan and the States during your ball season, and the rest of the boys have elected to stay at home and train,” said Small.

New Zealand will be challenged in Saskatoon by Canada, the U. S., Australia and Japan.

“Everyone wants to knock you off when you’re at the top but we look at it as our motivation to maintain our world ranking,” said Small. “We’re going there to win it and not defend it. Hopefully about 4:30 (p. m.) on the 26th of July, we’ll have the answer that we’re after.”

The Kiwi side is led by former Major League Baseball prospect Travis Wilson, a second baseman who spent time in the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds organizations.

There’s also first-baseman Jarrad Martin, who is a stalwart with the Broken Bow Gremlins. Centrefielder Thomas Makea and young left-fielder Ben Enoka also help power the offense.

The Kiwis hit five home runs off the Selects in a five-inning 12-2 win in yesterday’s opener.

Wilson led the attack with a two-run homer and five RBIs. Patrick Shannon also had a two-run homer for New Zealand while Donnie Hale, Nathan Nukunuku and Rhys Casley added solo shots.

Marty Grant earned the win while Andy Skelton, Jamie Simpson and Andrew Scott all pitched for Owen Sound. Skelton was two-for-two for Owen Sound with a two-run homer. Game 2 details were unavailable.

SA softball squad heads for Canada

TOMMY Kgomo, coach of the national softball team Simunye, says they intend using the International Softball Federation’s World Series in Saskatoon, Canada, next week to improve their world ranking.

The South Africans are ranked 15th and can move to the 10th spot if they reach the semifinal stage of the showpiece.

The event kicks off on July 17 and the final will be played 11 days later in Saskatoon. In their final preparations for the event, Simunye won two of three friendly matches against Botswana last weekend.

“ We have been playing well in our preparatory matches and I don’t see why we should struggle in Canada,” Kgomo said yesterday. “We have been in this tournament before and we know what will be required of us to deliver.”

Simunye will be led by veteran campaigners such as Tyran Young, Moses “Vasna” Molaba, Greg Barrette and Anthony Carr. – Matome Lebea

Media Release
Re: ISF XII World Men’s Softball Championship

We are only one week away from Day One of the International Softball Federation XII Men’s World Championship. The opening ceremonies are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 17, at what may well be Canada’s premier softball stadium, Bob Van Impe Stadium.

An expected capacity crowd of approximately 7500 of Canada’s most knowledgeable softball fans as well as supporters of the sport from other countries will take in a proud moment in Saskatoon’s sport history. Dignitaries will include Softball Canada President Kevin Quinn, ISF President Don Porter, and special guest Mike Chambers, President of the Canadian Olympic Committee. This is a major boost for softball as the sport is presently in a competition for reinstatement into the 2016 Olympic Games.

Local fans will appreciate the involvement of Canada’s first three members of the ISF Hall of Fame who all hail from Saskatoon: Bob Van Impe, Gene McWillie, and Ed Bitz. Hometown hero Trevor Ethier will return to the diamond just blocks away from where he grew up playing softball to play for Canada, and he will be called upon to give the athletes’ oath.

Following the ceremony, fans will be treated to two great games featuring four of the top seven ranked teams in the world. At 7:00 p.m. local time, second-ranked Canada will take on seventh-ranked Argentina, who is likely to pitch Lucas Mata, one of the best pitchers in the world and presently playing tournaments with the Saskatoon Aspen Interiors. The second game features the two winningest countries in ISF Men’s World Championship history, the United States playing the three-time defending champion New Zealand.

Phillipine National Team Gears up for ISF Worlds

Blu Boys gear up for worlds

Written by Reuben Terrado / Reporter

THE PHILIPPINE men’s softball team is hoping to improve on its ninth-place finish in the 2009 World Men’s Softball Championship set from July 17 to 26 in Saskatoon, Canada.

The RP Blu Boys placed ninth out of 16 teams four years ago in New Zealand.

“The boys will have at least four tune-up matches against the United States, Australia and a local Canadian team that was arranged,” said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) secretary-general Danny Francisco.

“This will also fill the vacuum in the team’s lack of international competition.”

The team is composed of Apolonio Rosales, Orlando Binarao, Jasper Cabrera, Manolito Binarao, Oscar Bradshaw, Isidro Abello, Darius Bacarisas, Ben Maravilles, Emerson Atilano, Anthony Santos, Roger Roxas, Vic Enriquez, Marlon Pagkaliwagan, Leo Barredo and Jorge Marquez and mentored by Isaac Bacarisas.

Rosales, Orlando Binarao, Manolito Binarao, Cabrera, Darius Bacarisas and Roxas were part of the Blu Boys four years ago while Pagkaliwagan, Barredo and Marquez are first-timers.

The team will leave on July 11 to acclimatize and play tune-up matches.

Isaac Bacarisas said the pitching rotation is young but the Blu Boys would make up for it with its hitting power and speed.

Also seeing action are teams from Botswana, Denmark, Great Britain, Czech Republic, South Africa, Australia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, the United States and New Zealand.

Martin making his pitch for elusive softball bauble

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

=”” />

Todd Martin will pitch for Team Canada at the ISF world tournament that gets under way July 17 in Saskatoon.

By John Cudmore

Within every ball player there seems to be a little kid waiting to bust out.

The way Todd Martin sees it, his inner kid has unfinished business before he hangs up the cleats on a stellar international softball career.

The 39-year-old Aurora resident has used his significantly talented throwing arm to pitch his way to several major championships, including an International Softball Congress title with his current team, the Kitchener Rivershark Twins, at the 2008 global showdown in Kimberley, Wis.

But the six-foot, four-inch righthander needs an International Softball Federation title to complete a set of five significant championships near and dear to North American softball players. He’ll get the chance as a member of Team Canada for the ISF world tournament that gets under way July 17 in Saskatoon.

While he won’t say never, the Bracebridge native suggests this may be his last kick at the ISF version of the world championship, since it only comes around every four years.

“I guess I won’t get completely out (of softball) until my body shuts down, but this could be my last with Team Canada,” said Martin, one of four pitchers listed on the Canadian roster. “But I said I’d had enough the last time and Team Canada came calling again. This is only every four years and I’d love to win it. When you’re young, you don’t mind going to the training camps and having some fun, but, at some point, you have to put other things first.”

In most sports at an elite level, young blood is a necessity to keep the line moving. In Canada, the state of the game among young players required to follow in the footsteps of the veterans is faltering. Few members of the Canadian roster check in at under 30.

“There simply are not a lot of young guys to force us older guys out,” Martin said. “That’s why they asked us to come back and help out.

“It’s too bad because the rest of the world is getting very good and playing a lot of it. It’s becoming a worldwide game. That we’re not producing guys is sad. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s a love-of-the-game type of sport.”

Winning in Saskatoon would complete a set of titles that already includes two ISC crowns, a Pan American Games gold in 1999 and American Softball Association and Canadian national titles (two each).

“That it’s being hosted in Canada was a big draw for me to come back,” said Martin, who still chucks for his buddies on the Aurora Shoeless Joe’s entry in the Oshawa City&District Softball League. “I’ve represented Canada all over the world, but it’s pretty special to play for your country in your own country, especially if you get to hear the (Canadian) anthem at the end.”

The pinnacle of his career is the gold captured in the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg. It’s a feeling he would gladly duplicate later this month.

“Standing on the podium in Canada with four or five thousand fans singing along … to win in Canada for Canada is awesome,” Martin said.

“They will fill the stands and it’ll be exciting and we’ll have a chance to win it.”

New Zealand figures to be the team to beat and are three-time defending champs with claims in 1996, 2000 and 2004. Canada is typically considered among the top three or four softball-playing nations.

Canada begins play in its round-robin pool against Argentina. Rounding out the group are the Czech Republic, Venezuela, Australia, South Africa, Puerto Rico and Indonesia.

Martin figures to get three starts in the round-robin and playoff portion, but has one target in mind.

“I want the ball on Sunday against New Zealand. That’s my little kid dream.”

Farewell for softball champ

Monday, June 29th, 2009

SAFE TRAVELS: Among those bidding Marty Grant, back row, middle, farewell were, back row, councillor Aldo Miccio and Jack Fletcher and front, from left Lewis Miccio, Grant’s son Cooper and Hugo Fletcher

Around 30 friends and supporters bid Nelson’s Marty Grant an emotional farewell on Sunday as the veteran Black Sox pitcher left for his fifth world championship softball campaign in Canada.

With three world crowns already under his belt, the 42-year-old Grant is chasing title No 4 in Saskatoon starting on July 17.

An official sendoff from councillor Aldo Miccio, representing Mayor Kerry Marshall, and a rousing Haka Tika Tonu performed by the Nelson kapa haka group Whatukura were part of the brief farewell ceremony at Nelson Airport.

Grant thanked his supporters and training partners Derryn French, Sam Miller, Simon Ashby and Jack Fletcher, and his friends who in a surprise gesture last week presented Grant’s wife Abbie and son Cooper with air tickets to travel to Canada for the championships. Abbie is recovering from successful breast cancer surgery.

Grant’s progress can be followed on his Twitter page or via the international softball federation website link for the champs, which will provide coverage of games and Ballpark Radio.

Editor’s note: “Bon Voyage” might be a more suitable headline; “Farewell” sounds like retirement and Marty is very much on the active player list, earning All World honors at last year’s ISC World Tournament at age 42. The last line of the story is not quite accurate — we’ll be broadcasting the Black Sox games on Ballparkradio at the World Fastball Invitational at Monkton this coming week/end, July 2-5, 2009, but not the ISF Championships which start July 17, 2009. Ballparkradio did submit a proposal to broacast the 2009 ISF World Championships in Saskatoon, but was not selected to do the broadcasting.
