What Time is it in Whitehorse?

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

With twelve different countries participating in the 2008 ISF Junior Men’s World Championships, in a wide range of time zones, we expect many to be asking the question, “What time is it in Whitehorse?”.

Easy for those of us here on the west coast who are in the same time zone as Whitehorse. But for everyone else, we’ve made the time zone conversion a bit easier with our “World Time Zone Clocks” page at our companion site, www.Ballparkradio.com.

(There’s a lot of code on that page, so give it time to load — you’ll find it loads faster after the first time.)

Speaking of Ballparkradio, we’ve been receiving some emails asking when our broadcasts begin. The answer is 12:00 noon next Thursday, June 26, 2008, for Game 52, when the USA Jr. Men take on the reigning world champions, Australia. Kyle and I will be broadcasting 12 games in 3 days.

I think it’s safe to call them the team to beat.

In recent years, Australia has been on a tear at the championships and are currently the three-time defending champions.

The Australians haven’t dropped a single game in the past two world junior events and are, to date, the only team that have been able to win the title on home soil.

This feat came in 2001 in Sydney. Australia first participated in the championships in 1993, which was the fourth time the event was held.

Team USA lost its opening round game by a score of 4-2 to Japan at the 8th ISF Junior Men’s World Fast Pitch Championships in White horse, Yukon

Japan scored a run in the top of the first inning without a hit. USA starter B.J. Hunhoff was called for four illegal pitches before being replaced by Jim Hartman. The US countered in the bottom of the first on Nick Cole’s blast over the center field fence.

Japan took the lead with a run in the third inning and added a run in the fifth on three hits with two outs. The USA closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth as Cole was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on an outfield error.

Japan extended the lead to 4-2 with a six-inning run on a base hit and error on a collision in the USA outfield and another base hit. The USA threatened with two outs in the seventh as Cole was hit by a pitch again and advanced to third by Gentry Mitchell but a popup ended the game.

Hartman allowed eight hits while striking out seven and walking zero. Kojiro Hamada went the distance for Japan allowing three hits while striking out ten, walking three and hitting three USA batters.

Head coach Tim Lyon commented after the game. “It was a tough opening round game. We played well but not well enough to win. We’re looking forward to bouncing back against Denmark on Saturday.”
