From the Grand Rapids Press:

Jenison softball player represents U.S.

GRAND RAPIDS — The centerpiece of Adam LaLonde’s softball summer is now in the record books, and if you can’t rate it an “A”, it most certainly is a “B-plus”.

Jenison’s LaLonde is the starting shortstop for the U.S. national fastpitch softball team.

Three weeks ago the team finished second in the World Cup tournament in Prague, Czechoslovakia.

America’s Challenge

Last week the squad won the America’s Challenge tournament in Oklahoma City.

The men’s America’s Challenge tournament was played at the same time as the women’s America’s Challenge.

The only difference was the women’s event was broadcast live nightly, including Monday night’s championship game against Japan.

The men get only one shot at national TV, and a tape-delayed preliminary game airing Sunday.

“The complex in Oklahoma City is at the Amateur Softball Association headquarters and museum,” LaLonde said. “It’s the same field where the NCAA finals are held. There are four fields, so we were playing pretty much when the women were.”

The finals

The American men beat Japan in the finals in Oklahoma City, reversing the finish from the World Cup in Prague.

In that game, Japan prevailed 2-0, with LaLonde getting the only hit for the U.S.

“We turned it around in Oklahoma City and we mercied them (7-0) in the finals,” he said. “It just all came together.”

The America’s Challenge playoff was the first, and didn’t include world powers New Zeeland, Canada or Australia. Argentina finished third in Oklahoma City.

“They are talking about having it again next year, with most of the big teams there,” LaLonde said. “And it looks like more of our games will be televised.

“Eventually the plan is to have the World Cup played in the United States.”

Taking notice of the men

Thanks to the success of our Olympic teams, and the competitive level of Division I softball that gets a great deal of television coverage, interest in fastpitch softball is growing.

But that’s mostly in the women’s game, where pitchers like Cat Osterman and Jennie Finch are well known, compared to men’s ace Terry Luster from Missouri.

“The men’s and women’s teams are together a lot, so we’ve gotten to know each other and friendships have formed,” LaLonde said. “I think the women’s team has amazing players.

“The real difference is that the game isn’t played in the country like it used to be, there aren’t as many great pitchers.

“Terry is our veteran, but we’re trying to bring along a couple of young guys and get it going again.”

New Zeeland a prime spot

The men’s team played for a full house in Oklahoma City, but to LaLonde, the place to be is New Zeeland.

“They really love the game down there,”‘ he said. “Their seasons are opposite ours, so some of their best players play what is their summer ball during our winter, then they come here for our summer.

“A couple of Americans do the same thing, but you have to be young and single. For a couple of years it would probably be a lot of fun.”

Japan has burst on the softball scene in both men’s and women’s events.

Japan’s pitching improving

“They’ve always been pretty good,” LaLonde said. “But their pitching has come along. They aren’t explosively fast, but they are very disciplined, working the corners. They don’t overpower you; they try to get you to chase their pitch. You have to be patient and wait for something good to hit.”

In the America’s Challenge championship game, LaLonde, who leads off, had a single and three walks.

“My job is to get on and get things going,” he said. “Worked pretty well in the finals.”

USA Tops Japan for ACS Title

Chris DeLarwelle hit .333 with 12 RBI and two home runs in the American Challenge Series

From USAsoftball.com:

USA Men’s National Team takes home inaugural American Challenge Series title

Oklahoma City — USA Softball Men’s National Team won the inaugural KFC American Challenge Series on Sunday by defeating Japan 7-0 in the championship game.

Team USA rode the bat of Chris DeLarwelle (Forestville, Wisc.) to the championship. DeLarwelle went 2-3 with three RBI. For the tournament, DeLarwelle hit .333 with 12 RBI and two home runs.

“I saw that the umpires were giving the pitchers a bit on the outside of the plate,” DeLarwelle said. “So I adjusted and challenged the Japanese pitchers to pitch me on the outside half of the plate.”

DeLarwelle’s adjustment paid off when he blasted a two RBI single down the left-field line in the third inning to start the scoring for Team USA.

DeLarwelle, the MVP for the ISF Men’s World Cup last month in Prague, struck again in the fifth inning with an RBI single to centerfield.

“I had worked on hitting prior to Prague and continued so after I returned from the World Cup,” DeLarwelle said. “I found what worked for me and it helped me to be consistent.”

The win marked a reversal of fortune for Team USA against Japan. The Americans had lost four straight, including two in the ACS, before winning the championship game against them.

“We were trying to find a line-up that worked against Japan,” Coach Peter Turner said. “Plus, the more we play together, the better we get.”

Japan was never able to find a rhythm against pitcher Terry Luster (Bunceton, Mo.). He allowed only two hits in five innings of work.

“Terry just hit his spots and made it easy for me,” USA catcher Frank DeGroat Jr. (Ringwood, N.J.) said. “When a team like Japan has a lot of team speed and likes to bunt, you have to try and change the locations quite frequently.”

After taking the lead off DeLarwelle’s two RBI single in the third, Team USA struck again in the fourth. Sonny Perkins (St. Michaels, Ariz.) hit an RBI single to put them up by three.

Omar Moraga (Tucson, Ariz.) started things off in the fifth inning with an RBI triple. After an RBI single by DeLarwelle, DeGroat knocked in another run with a single. Nate Devine (Merced, Calif.) hit a walk off single that scored DeGroat from second to end the game after five innings due to the international run rule.

Team USA advanced to the championship game by surviving a late rally by Argentina during the play-in game earlier in the day.

Team USA started strong, jumping out to 11-3 lead after four innings, including a grand slam by DeLarwelle. However, Argentina had a six-run rally in the fifth to pull within two.

Argentina captured third place in the inaugural KFC American Challenge Series.

Tape Delay of USA vs. Japan on ESPN2

Thanks to Bernie Lopez, who was our roving reporter and photographer in Prague, CZ for the World Cup for this information.

The ASA has secured a two-hour time slot for men’s fast pitch action featuring Team USA against the Japanese Men’s National Team on ESPN2, Sunday, July 22 at 3:00 pm CST.

Editor’s note: To those of us on the West Coast, that should translate to 1:00pm on July 22 — but be sure to check you local guide or schedule, as they’ve been know to vary among time zones. This appears to be a tape delay of the game between the USA and Japan played at 3pm CST on Saturday during the American Challenge Series taking place in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. For complete schedule of American Challenge Series, click here.

* SPOILER WARNING *
Remember this is a tape delay, so if you don’t want to know who wins it before you watch it, steer clear of all reports after 3pm Saturday. (I intend to). Remember Jimmy Fallon’s “Lobster Hands” in the movie “Fever Pitch”? “La la la la la la la. I can’t hear you” 😉
