Fastpitch More Than Just a Game to Nate Devine

More than just a game

Merced College assistant baseball coach Nate Devine spent two months traveling with the U.S. softball team.

By James Burns
July 27, 2007

Nate Devine pressed his face up against the cold bus window, and with eyes as big as softballs, peered out at a world he’s never known. He was nervous and a little scared, too, unsure of what lay in wait around the next corner. Softball never felt so serious and the police escort to Prague’s downtown ballpark wasn’t helping matters, either.

How would European fans welcome an American softball team? Would they hiss and boo?

Just to be sure, Devine shielded himself by tugging his cap down lowon his brow before trotting out onto the diamond.

Almost instantly, the stands erupted into a chorus of chants and cheers.

That’s odd, Devine thought, almost certain a local celebrity had just walked down the stadium steps behind him.

Then it hit him like a loose fastball — he was the celebrity.

And the police escort?

Merely a formality.

A capacity crowd of nearly 3,000 turned up in June to see Devine and the U.S. men’s softball team compete in the World Cup.

“And the (Czech) national team wasn’t even playing anymore,” the Merced College assistant baseball coach saidin a voice that suggested long-term awe.

“They were cheering for every good play, every big hit and every strikeout. Even trying to do the wave.

“It was like they didn’t even have a favorite team — they just loved the game.”

Devine and the Americans gave them quite a show, too, before eventually falling to Japan in the title game.

The Americans were given a similar response at the American Challenge Series in Oklahoma earlier this month.

The U.S. breezed to the inaugural title, avenging their loss to Japan in the championship game.

Devine was impressive in his first national team appearance on home soil, capping the title run with a walk-off single.

During Sunday’s tape-delayed telecast of a Series round-robin game, ESPN commentators described the 30-year-old Devine as the future of American softball.

“I would be lying if I told you I expected Nate to come through as big as he did,” U.S. coach Pete Turner said, “but I was well aware of his talent.

“I can’t speak enough about what Nate did for us. I think he definitely impressed our selection committee.”

Devine went 16 for 44 in two tournaments with 2 homers, 7 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

“It was sad to see it come to an end. I enjoyed being with the team and being able to see the world,” Devine said. “You get to see just how much the sport means to people.

“It’s been a crazy ride.”

It’s not over yet.

His club team beckons.

Devine will rejoin the Southern California Bombers this weekend in Canada for the Vancouver Challenge, one of North America’s largest and toughest draws.

The Bombers are ranked fourth in the world by the International Softball Congress.

The Challenge will serve as a final tuneup for August’s ISC World Tournament in Ontario, Canada.

Win or lose, it’s been a memorable run for the hard-hitting first baseman, who took up softball as a teenager “because my hometown didn’t offer summer baseball.”

His pocket-sized digital camera shows the wears of his jet-setting summer vacation.

The buttons are worn from use and the memory stick is filled with photos of people, teammates and rare buildings.

Memories frozen in time.

“I was the guy in Team USA gear with the camera, staring up at all the buildings with a huge smile on my face,” Devine said. “I must have taken like 400 pictures.

“If it weren’t for (the national team), I would have never had the chance to see Europe — to go to all these places.”

Prague, the jewel of the Czech Republic with its old-world customs and architecture, was second to none.

He had never seen anything like it before — not in Merced and certainly not in Sonora, where he was raised.

One moment, he was standing at the gates of Prague Castle, and the next, mingling with locals on the cobblestone streets of Wenceslas Square.

Devine signed autographs, played catch with local kids and even passed out equipment.

“Getting a chance to meet people from other countries and promote the sport, that was cool,” Devine said.

“And at the same time, with all the stuff going on in the world right now, it was nice to show that Americans weren’t bad people at all.”

Even off the field.

Santa Rosa Clinches National Berth at Tulare

Tom Dower Goes Off in Championship Game, Leads Team to National Berth

TULARE, CA — Santa Rosa Fastpitch defeated The Silverhawks 18-12 in the “if needed” game to win the 1st Annual Men’s Fastpitch Western Memorial Weekend Challenge held here at Prosperity Park May 26-27. Santa Rosa not only took home the $1,000 first-place money but qualified for the Amateur Softball Association’s Class C National Tournament in Killeen, TX.

Jeff Nystrom hung on to pitch Santa Rosa to victory in the championship game, thanks to a powerful hitting attack led by Most Valuable Player Mark Young and catcher Tom Dower. In the title game, Dower had a home run, two triples and a double, while both he and Young hit over .600 over the weekend.

Thanks to Herb Dower for the latest edition of “The Dower Report”

Editor’s note: If a single, double, triple and homer is “hitting for the cycle”, what do you call Tom Dower’s performance in the championship game — a “motor-cycle”?

Grass Valley Tournament – Northern Cal – April 14-15, 2007

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

From Mike Milligan in Northern California:

Hello Gentlemen,
Nevada County Fastpitch will be holding our first tourney of the year on April 14th and 15th 2007. All games will be held at Les Eva field in Memorial Park in Grass Valley ca. If we get enough teams we will possibly make it a twin cities tourney and use the Colfax field also. If we can get at least eight teams to commit, the first place team will receive a $250.00 gift certificate at A Perfect Game to be used as the coach sees fit. A new bat, uniforms, ball bags, wind breakers or whatever we can get for you, even a trophy if that gets you off! This tourney is open to any and all level teams. “B” level teams will be spotting the “C” teams four runs to start the game. Also the top finishing legitimate “C” team will receive a $100.00 gift certificate or both the $250.00 prize and the $100.00 prize if you win the whole thing. So start working out now “C” teams.

We really would love to have all the Upper level teams as the Girls fastpitch league will be advertising this tournament so the young ladies can come out and observe the game they play at the highest level. It sounds funny but some of them do not even know that men play fastpitch. Other fun stuff: Home Run Derby, Strongest Overhand Throw MPH, Strongest Underhand Throw(MPH), fastest around the bases and a Throwing Accuracy Competition. (Prizes still to be determined.) Skills competition to be held on Saturday night.

The entry fee will be $375.00 due in by Friday April 6th. Hope you all can make it up (or down for team Nevada) for the funest tourney of the year. If you have any questions just lay them on me!!!!

Northern Cal Travel League

Monday, February 5th, 2007

From Bob Chapel, in Montana:

To All Teams:

Subject: New Format & Information for 2007

There were changes made to the ASA code at the National meeting in November that will affect our program. National qualifiers were eliminated and you no longer have to play in Regional tournaments.

Region 14 will still offer a national qualifier and regional tournament, instead of berths there will be travel money awarded to the winner. The region has set the following criteria for attending the Nationals; teams must play in FOUR events. The region has identified three events the national qualifier, the association championship and the regional tournament as being special; therefore, teams must play in one of these to count as one of the four events.

See the attached minutes from the last Classification meeting for the new format.

The tournament series will consist of eight events with a new format since there are no berths to play for.

July 14 & 15 Sonora Bob Chapel 406-690-0664

With relocating to Montana, it will be more difficult to organize the tournaments this year so I need your cooperation by committing at least two weeks prior to my events. With the first two events being in March, I would like to hear from teams by March 2, 2007 for the events in March. You can commit by either calling me at (406) 690-0664 or (406) 896-1086 or emailing me at chapelrm@msn.com. I have been talking to teams from Central CA about playing in our events so you will need to commit early to secure your spot. If you are going to play in several of my five events and wish to pay for them at one time you may do so. We have addressed last years umpire problems and I have been assured that all umpire assignments will be covered this year, especially in Sparks.

Make checks payable to:
