COLFAX — Strong pitching, key hitting and solid defense paved the way over the weekend for the All Phase Land Clearing men’s softball team to walk off with top honors in the 44th annual Colfax Men’s Fast Pitch Classic.

The Grass Valley team parlayed the trio of ingredients to post four straight wins, including a 17-8 decision over the NorCal Gamblers of Sacramento in Sunday afternoon’s championship game.

All Phase spotted the Gamblers leads of 3-0 and 4-3 in the final before parading 10 batters to the plate in a six-run third inning and 11 more in a six-run fourth.

Justin Deme, who led all hitters in the tournament with six home runs, hit a three-run blast in the third inning before teammate Rob Zydonis added a two-run single to spark the fourth-inning rally.

Pete Medrano worked the first four frames for the win before giving way to Will Maddox, who allowed one-run to the Gamblers in the fifth before closing the door for the save.

All Phase began the tournament Friday night with a 15-4 win over Flue Doctor of Grass Valley, then came back on Saturday for an impressive 4-0 win over the Nor Cal Merchants of Stockton as Maddox fired a four-hitter. Medrano, Troy Sidebottom and Curt Campbell each had a pair of hits.

In Sunday’s elimination games, All Phase gained a berth in the final by blanking McCall’s Painting of San Francisco 3-0. Maddox shut down the Bay Area squad on a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts.

Maddox was the recipient of the Doug Hess Memorial Award as the tourney’s outstanding pitcher. Deme garnered the Ed Fontana Memorial Award as the tournament’s most valuable player.

California A’s fall to Michigan again, eliminated from ISC World

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

The California Taylor Farm A’s run at the 2009 ISC World Tournament came to an end late Wednesday evening, with a 7-0 loss to the Midland Explorers from Michigan. It was the second time that Michigan beat the A’s, having sent them to the loser’s bracket in their open game. The first time around, the # 20 ranked A’s nearly upset the # 10 ranked Michigan, taking a 4-1 lead into the 7th inning before Michigan rallied for 4 in the 7th to beat them.

Wednesday night, the game was not nearly as close. Michigan scored three in the first inning, with a home run from ISC veteran Todd Schultz. The game was then suspended due to a torrential downpour. Play finally resume hours later, but the California squad could not must much in the way of offense, with just four hits, one each by veterans Todd Budke and Eddie Martin, and the kids, Marcus Tan and Kevin Castillo. Argentine Sebastian Gervesutti took the loss, finishing 2-2 in the top flite tournament.

Budke and Martin had solid tournaments for the A’s, whose only losses were to higher ranked teams (# 10 Michigan and # 11 Dominican Republic, both of who are still alive in the tournament), while knocking off two higher ranked opponents, #17 Quad City Sox, IA and #14 ranked Dolan & Murphy, IL. It was the first ISC World Tournament for the Salinas squad which finished with a 2-3 record, after an 0-2 start.

The ISC World Tournament heads into its final two days, with the championship game slated for 7pm on Friday. Most of the remaining games in the tournament will be telecast on Ballparkradio.TV, starting with a 3pm CDT broadcast that will kick off a string of eight broadcasts in two days.

Pinocchio on Fire !

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Somebody call Geppetto ! Pinocchio is on fire !

California A’s second baseman Steve Pinocchio was on fire Tuesday in Moline, Illinois, in the A’s game against Dolan & Murphy of Illinois. Steve went 4 for 4, including two home runs, scored three and drove in four, to lead his team to a 10-2 victory.

Todd Budke and Dave Kimura banged out three hits, while Marcus Tan and Eddie Martin each added 2 in the 15 hit assault. Martin had two hits in the prior game and is swinging a hot bat for the A’s. California pitchers Dave Drotzmann and Sebastian Gervesutti combined on a 4 hitter.

The A’s evened their record at 2-2 after dropping their first two, both tough losses, 5-4 to Midland, Michigan and 4-2 to the Dominican Republic.

The Salinas, California squad will now get a rematch against Midland Michigan, the team that sent the A’s to the loser’s bracket, rallying for 4 runs in the 7th inning to beat the A’s in their first game.

Native Softball Classic this weekend

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

by Dave Price, Special to The R-C

Cliff Simpson Jr. takes batting practice in Dresslerville Tuesday night in preparation for this weekend’s softball tournament.

Combine tradition with love for the game, some top-level talent, even a unique twist thrown in for good measure, and you have the ingredients for the Cal-Neva Native Softball Classic this weekend at Stodick Park.

A field of men’s fast-pitch softball teams from Nevada and California, in addition to at least one co-ed entry, is expected to play Saturday and Sunday in an event that has been held annually in Carson Valley since 1967.

Games are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday and conclude Sunday afternoon.

Though known by different names over the years, the tournament has long been a family affair, according to Loren Simpson, who is serving as tournament director for the second year.

Previously, his aunts, Virginia and Lenora Kizer, and before that, his father, Cliff Simpson, were all movers and shakers in putting on what is one of the few men’s fast-pitch tournaments remaining in Northern Nevada.

“This has been a family effort for years, since the beginning, really,” Simpson said. “It’s been a long time. This is our 42nd or 43rd year … it’s now the biggest and longest-running men’s fast-pitch tournament in the area.”

There’s been a surge of interest this year because 12 teams are expected to play in the fast-pitch division this weekend.

That’s opposed to last year, when the response was low enough that a one-pitch limit slow-pitch tournament was set up to bring in more teams.

“This is the most teams we’ve had in a decade, the most since we had nationals here,” Simpson said. “We’re still going to have a slow-pitch division.

I expect five or six teams to come out and play a round robin schedule and have fun.”

On the fast-pitch side, this tournament will serve as a tune-up for teams preparing for upcoming national tournaments. Among those are the North American Fastpitch Association men’s AA and A World Series on Aug. 13-16 in Sioux Falls, S.D., and the NAFA Masters West World Series for men’s 50-, 45-, 40-, 35-and-over, as well as women’s 35-and-over teams on Sept. 18-20 at Centennial Park in Carson City.

Proceeds from this weekend’s tournament will help cover entry fees for Dresslerville Athletic Club teams that plan to play in Carson City next month and for teams to play in tournaments next year, according to Simpson.

Three or four local teams are tentatively set to play this weekend, two of those led by longtime fixtures in Northern Nevada’s fast-pitch softball community, Junior and Craig Kizer.

“Junior still has great movement on the ball,” Simpson said of the long-time ace pitcher and well-known pitching coach.

Simpson, 43, said he may even try to pitch some himself.

“I’ve always loved to play. If I’m healed up from my injury, I’ll throw some,” he said, adding with a laugh. “I don’t have great speed or great movement on the ball like Junior. It’s all about placement; I need every edge I can get.”

Simpson hopes he can delegate most of the pitching load for his Cal-Neva squad to Arizona ace Sonny Perkins, who in 2007 was a member of USA men’s national team that finished second at the ISF Men’s World Cup in Prague and in 2005 was named designated hitter on the ISC All-World team.

“He’s pretty well known in our fast-pitch circle,” Simpson said of Perkins.

As for the unique twist, Craig Kizer has entered Red Storm, which consists of players from a team that won the NSA girls 18-and-under state tournament in Carson City last month. The state championship team included Carson City’s Cassie Vondrak and Fernley’s Sevreana Johnson, who have committed to play for Western Nevada College, and Carson City’s Katie McEwan, who is set to play for Santa Barbara City College.

“It’ll be a co-ed team … I’ll probably even play some myself, just to help direct them a little from the infield,” Kizer said. “Mostly, it’s to let the girls see some quality pitching.”

And to have some fun, he added.

“That’s what the game’s all about, having fun,” Kizer said. “A lot of those guys out there, we’ve been playing together and against each other for years.”

Simpson echoed that.

“It takes a lot of work. Is it worth the time? Oh, yeah, it’s good to see that calibre of pitching. We just love the game and we want to see it keep going.”

Chas Lowry of the Artichoke Joe’s Fireballs makes a play at shortstop in action from last season’s Colfax Recreation Men’s Fast Pitch Softball Classic. The field is starting to round into shape for this year’s 44th annual event, planned for Aug. 21-23.

The field is starting to take shape for the upcoming 44th Colfax Recreation Association’s Men’s Softball Classic, which is slated for Aug. 21-23 at the Living War Memorial Park in Colfax.

A line-up of eight men’s fast pitch teams are expected to fill the tourney brackets which will be pool play the first two days of the tournament followed by an elimination round on Sunday.

Confirming entries as if this week were the NorCal Gamblers from Sacramento, Sonoma Valley, Les Eva All-Stars of Grass Valley, All Phase Land Clearing of Grass Valley, Nor Cal Merchants of Stockton, Perfect Game from Grass Valley and the Pastime Club Fireballs of Colfax.

The longtime running tournament began in 1966 with four teams playing a one-day event.

At its peak in the early 1980s, the tournament was once played over a six-day period and included as many as 22 teams.

The Colfax Fireballs with 13 tournament championships lead the title winners in the event. Other multiple winners include Sutherland Union Oil (4), Reno Raiders (3), Ball Stars (3), Neilsen Gamblers (2), Italian AC (2), and J&P Sportsmen (2).

Salinas player headed to men’s softball tournament

Last summer, it was a Salinas woman competing on softball’s biggest stage the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games.

This summer, it’s a Salinas man taking part in North America’s largest fastpitch softball tournament.

While 39-year-old Ron Guzman doesn’t hold the distinction of being one of the world’s fastest softball pitchers like Monica Abbott does, he does carry that same passion for the sport.

For the past 16 years, Guzman has taken long weekend trips around the state and country to play competitive softball.

“It takes a lot out of you,” he said.

But playing in tournaments such as the International Softball Congress Men’s Fastball Tournament, Aug. 14-22, in Moline, Ill., makes it all worthwhile, he said.

Guzman and the Taylor Farms California Athletics are one of 24 teams to qualify for the ISC tournament.

The tournament includes players from across the United States, Canada, Argentina, New Zealand, Australia, Czech Republic, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Denmark and the Philippines will be competing. More than 1,200 players and 4,000 fans daily are expected to take part in the event.

Guzman, who works for Taylor Farms, said the company has been the majority sponsor of the men’s fastpitch softball team since 2001.

Guzman said three-fourths of the team used to consist of players from Salinas. But after winning a national championship in 2002, the tournaments got tougher and a new caliber of players was needed.

The 2009 Taylor Farms team is primarily made up of Northern and Central California players ranging in age from 22 to 39. Some of those players came over after other softball organizations folded. Guzman, the team’s manager and first baseman, said about half of this year’s roster helped Taylor Farms win the ISC World Tournament of Champions in Appleton, Wisc., last year. That win automatically qualified the team for this year’s world tournament.

Taylor Farms opens the tournament on Aug. 15 against the Midland Explorers of Midland, Mich.

Team USA defeated Maccabi Canada Masters 9-1 in the Gold Medal Game. Dave Blackburn got the starting pitching assignment for team USA, and David Strauss got the starting assignment for Canada. It was Blackburn’s 4th World Maccabiah Games Gold Medal, a record for Softball players.

Maccabi USA was coached by Southern Californian and former Vista Bomber and Long Beach Painter catcher Kenny Schwartz. Schwartz was assisted by Barry Schoenbrun, who has successfully organized and run the Los Angeles Synagogue Softball League for 14 seasons.

Maccabi Canada Masters were coached by ISC Hall of Famer Larry Lynch (you don’t have to be Jewish to coach in the games) who was making his first trip to Israel.

Other Californians on the Maccabi USA Master’s team were:

Larry Silfen (SCIFL, San Diego Prime Time)
Mark Weinstock (Burbank, Cowboys)
Larry Lorin (Burbank, Dominators)

Michael Feldman (SCIFL, San Diego Prime Time)
Corey Angel (Burbank, Yankees)

Two time ISC All World outfielder Steve Schucker was named MVP and the leading hitter of the 18th Maccabiah Games Master’s Fastpitch Softball Tournament. Schucker sported a .706 Batting Average, and a big 2-Run Home Run in the first inning of the Gold Medal Game. Lead off man, and shortstop Jeremy Spear also provided great offensive spark for team USA throughout the Tournament. Spear is well known in Fastball circles as the film maker whose award winning documentary film “Fastpitch”, introduced many people to the pageantry of the ISC World Tournament.

At the Softball Awards Ceremony, Dave Blackburn was inducted in the International Player Category to the Israel Softball Hall of Fame, along with Pitchers Mark Bendahan of Canada, and Ricky Landau of Venezuela.

In the Men’s Open (no age restriction) fastpitch Tournament, Maccabi Canada edged Maccabi USA 2-1 in a hard fought Gold Medal Game, leaving the USA with a silver medal. Maccabi Canada’s Tom Berube, got 14 K’s in the pitching victory over Maccabi USA’s young up and coming pitcher Jason Gluckman, who threw the best game of his short pitching career, in almost stopping the Canadians. Maccabi Canada’s Mike Smulevitch’s RBI base hit in the bottom of the 7th inning spelled the difference, and delivered Maccabi Canada the Open Softball Gold Medal.

Maccabi USA’s Josh Persell (SCIFL, Long beach Black Sox) was the leading hitter of the Open Tournament. Besides Gluckman and Persell, other Californians on Maccabi USA included:

Daniel Cosgrove (Burbank Dominators)
Andrew Kirsh (Burbank Dominators)
Dan Winters (Burbank Dominators)
Dan Winnick (Bay Area Pirates)

Over 8,000 Jewish athletes, competing in 32 sports, from over 60 countries gathered for two weeks in Israel, making the 18th World Maccabiah Games the 3rd Largest Sporting Event in the world, next to the Olympics, and the World University Games. Maccabi Canada’s Masters Softball Second Baseman Lorne Swartz was given the honor of leading the entire Canadian delegation by carrying the Canadian Flag into Ramat Gan Stadium for the Opening Ceremonies in front of 55,000 spectators.

Maccabi USA and Beijing Olympics swimming phenom Jason Lezak was given the honor of lighting the Maccabiah torch at the festive 18th Maccabiah Games Opening Ceremonies.

Player’s Eye View – NorCal Travel League – Stockton

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Here is another edition of “Player’s Eye View” , from our friend Kevin Nishinaga, writing about the recent Northern California travel league weekend. It’s a personal diary of sorts, so should be read in that context. Nonetheless, I thought players and fans would enjoy it.

Here’s an excerpt:

Game 2 for Saturday was against taylor farms, the team that won the best of the west tourney two weeks ago. They scored 8 in the top of the first, on two homeruns, two balls off the fence, another hit or two, and one error. I had a swinging bunt single to lead off our half of the first, but got thrown out trying to steal second. I think everybody but the umpire thought I was safe. I think the ump didn’t get a good look because the area around second was sooo powdery that when I hit the dirt there was huge dust cloud. I got a faceful of dirt like I’ve never had before. I made a few plays at short, but also mishandled a slow roller for an error that turned into a run. Later in the game I twice faced a pitcher who tried out for team USA this year. That guy threw really hard and I struck out the first time, grounded to third the second time. We lost 11-3, and I later found out that at least three of the guys they had there play for team USA — Stephen Pinocchio, Nate Devine, and Chase Turner? (http://www.usasoftball.com/folders.asp?uid=4604). I think in the one game our pitcher gave up 3 homeruns and at least 5 balls that either hit the fence or one-hopped it. And the fences there are pretty deep, ~300 ft. I was 1 for 3 in game 2.

Editor’s note: Kevin, add Marcus Tan to that list of Team USA players on the California A’s. They will be playing at the ISC World Tournament in August. No shortage of talent on that club.

Thanks also to Kevin for some additional scores, for his “Fat City” team:

Fat City 9, Rude Pac 5
Taylor Farms 11, Fat City 3
Rockers 8, Fat City 0

Fat City 12, Rez Dawgs 5
Fat City 10, Funky Monkey 3
Fat City 10, Nielsen Gamblers 8

Fat City competed against “B” teams on Saturday and wound up winning the “C” division.
