TV & Internet streaming for Maccabiah Games

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Editor’s Note: We share the following from our good friend David Blackburn.

I thought you would like to see this important news release on live TV broadcasts and live Internet streaming of the 18th World Maccabiah Games in Israel .

In mid-July 2009, over 8,000 Jewish athletes from over 60 countries worldwide will be competing in over 30 sports, which will make these games the world’s 3rd largest sporting event.

I will be playing on the Maccabi USA Master’s (Over 35) fastpitch Softball team, and participating in my 6th World Maccabiah Games Softball Tournament.

I hope you all get a chance to tune into Israel for the festivities, and the competitions. The Opening Ceremonies will be streamed live from Ramat Gan Stadium.

A daily wrap-up studio show of games highlights will also be broadcast each day during the games.

In the middle of the JLTV homepage, www.jltv.tv, there is a section titled JLTV Live Stream. You will need to install a simple application called RayV but this offers the highest quality web streaming available.

The Opening Ceremony is being held on Monday, July 13th and coverage of the Maccabiah Games will continue through July 24th. Between the end of July and the end of September, JLTV will continue to run retrospective coverage of the 18th Maccabiah Games.

To date, the World’s Jewish Television Channel has produced 74 historical short-features of past Games from 1932 to 2005 in our Maccabiah Moments program. In addition, the network is producing 63 Maccabiah Nation’s program features, highlighting the countries represented in the Games, focusing on general information and Jewish community life.

To follow all of the 3 Maccabi USA softball team (Masters, Open, and Women’s) schedules and results, the Web Site for Maccabi USA in all sports is: www.maccabiusa.com

Phillipine National Team Gears up for ISF Worlds

Blu Boys gear up for worlds

Written by Reuben Terrado / Reporter

THE PHILIPPINE men’s softball team is hoping to improve on its ninth-place finish in the 2009 World Men’s Softball Championship set from July 17 to 26 in Saskatoon, Canada.

The RP Blu Boys placed ninth out of 16 teams four years ago in New Zealand.

“The boys will have at least four tune-up matches against the United States, Australia and a local Canadian team that was arranged,” said Amateur Softball Association of the Philippines (Asaphil) secretary-general Danny Francisco.

“This will also fill the vacuum in the team’s lack of international competition.”

The team is composed of Apolonio Rosales, Orlando Binarao, Jasper Cabrera, Manolito Binarao, Oscar Bradshaw, Isidro Abello, Darius Bacarisas, Ben Maravilles, Emerson Atilano, Anthony Santos, Roger Roxas, Vic Enriquez, Marlon Pagkaliwagan, Leo Barredo and Jorge Marquez and mentored by Isaac Bacarisas.

Rosales, Orlando Binarao, Manolito Binarao, Cabrera, Darius Bacarisas and Roxas were part of the Blu Boys four years ago while Pagkaliwagan, Barredo and Marquez are first-timers.

The team will leave on July 11 to acclimatize and play tune-up matches.

Isaac Bacarisas said the pitching rotation is young but the Blu Boys would make up for it with its hitting power and speed.

Also seeing action are teams from Botswana, Denmark, Great Britain, Czech Republic, South Africa, Australia, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, the United States and New Zealand.

Younger Blackburn makes his pitch for greatness

When fastpitch softball legend Ernie Blackburn rocked back and delivered, it was like staring into the face of an F-4 tornado. His heat had three speeds: mach 1, 2 and “Oh, my God. If he hits me, it’ll leave a hole!”

In my college days, I faced Blackburn a few times while playing in summer leagues. A foul tip was a moral victory, a deep fly reason to brag, and any kind of hit led to a souvenir ball with his autograph.

At 6 feet, 3 inches tall and 300 pounds, the 1949 Hammond grad was a frightening figure up on that hill, like Godzilla standing in Tokyo Harbor, so it was no surprise most opponents tried bunting on him.

Ernie passed away in April 20, 1997, due to complications from Parkinson’s Syndrome, and Region sports fans shed a tear that day. He was 67.

And now we have another fastpitch star in the spotlight, not far from the family tree.

Calumet City native Dave Blackburn, Ernie’s son, is heading to Israel for the 18th World Maccabiah Games featuring more than 8,000 athletes from 60 countries. This marks his sixth trip with the Macabbi USA Men’s Fastpitch Softball team, for whom he was the winning pitcher in the gold medal games of the 12th, 13th and 17th World Maccabiah fastpitch tournaments.

His six appearances are a record for American athletes.

Ernie would be very proud.

This international Jewish athletic event, similar to the Olympics, is held every four years. In softball, there is a Masters Division, in which Dave will compete, and an Open Division with no age restrictions.

“My dad was a tremendous influence,” he said. “I grew up traveling with him and the family, watching him play ball and getting a chance to be exposed to a high level of the sport. He never pushed me into it, but I really loved the game and just couldn’t get enough of it as a kid.”

He still can’t, at age 49, already having thrown 70 no-hitters and pitching nearly 1,700 games since making his debut at Hammond’s Riverside Park — alongside Ernie — in 1976.

The father-son duo played briefly together for Hammond-based Cataldi’s Restaurant/Bar in 1977 and Bob The Tarp Man in ’81.

In 1987, Ernie Blackburn was inducted into the Lake County Softball Hall of Fame. Two years later, the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame welcomed him in. Must’ve been his 99 no-hitters during a 42-year career and that 1973 state championship with Hammond’s Cobra Industries.

Old-timers still talk about the day he threw three no-hitters and one one-hitter in three different cities. America had The King and His Court. We were blessed with Ernie Blackburn, one-time Chicago Golden Gloves heavyweight champ.

“There was nothing like watching the attention and admiration my dad got when he pitched,” said Dave, whose 6-3, 275-pound frame reminds many of Ernie. “The (fastpitch) game solely evolves around the pitcher and that was another one of the hooks that drew me to pitching.”

Dave lives in Los Angeles now, where he works for a company that creates motion capture systems for Hollywood’s animation studios. He still finds times to pitch in night leagues around the Burbank and Los Angeles areas.

“I got no plans to quit in the future but I’m also a realist and know this won’t go on forever,” Dave said.

Not to put added pressure on him, but the United States got its butt kicked at the 17th World Maccabiah Games with a distant-second 71 gold medals to 227 for host Israel.

Time to bring it, like Ernie did.

Farewell for softball champ

Monday, June 29th, 2009

SAFE TRAVELS: Among those bidding Marty Grant, back row, middle, farewell were, back row, councillor Aldo Miccio and Jack Fletcher and front, from left Lewis Miccio, Grant’s son Cooper and Hugo Fletcher

Around 30 friends and supporters bid Nelson’s Marty Grant an emotional farewell on Sunday as the veteran Black Sox pitcher left for his fifth world championship softball campaign in Canada.

With three world crowns already under his belt, the 42-year-old Grant is chasing title No 4 in Saskatoon starting on July 17.

An official sendoff from councillor Aldo Miccio, representing Mayor Kerry Marshall, and a rousing Haka Tika Tonu performed by the Nelson kapa haka group Whatukura were part of the brief farewell ceremony at Nelson Airport.

Grant thanked his supporters and training partners Derryn French, Sam Miller, Simon Ashby and Jack Fletcher, and his friends who in a surprise gesture last week presented Grant’s wife Abbie and son Cooper with air tickets to travel to Canada for the championships. Abbie is recovering from successful breast cancer surgery.

Grant’s progress can be followed on his Twitter page or via the international softball federation website link for the champs, which will provide coverage of games and Ballpark Radio.

Editor’s note: “Bon Voyage” might be a more suitable headline; “Farewell” sounds like retirement and Marty is very much on the active player list, earning All World honors at last year’s ISC World Tournament at age 42. The last line of the story is not quite accurate — we’ll be broadcasting the Black Sox games on Ballparkradio at the World Fastball Invitational at Monkton this coming week/end, July 2-5, 2009, but not the ISF Championships which start July 17, 2009. Ballparkradio did submit a proposal to broacast the 2009 ISF World Championships in Saskatoon, but was not selected to do the broadcasting.

Salem welcomes USA fast pitch softball team

By JOHN APPICELLO, WSLS10 Sports Anchor

Our older viewers will remember the “king and his court” touring the nation back when men’s fast pitch softball was all the rage.

After falling from the limelight, it’s enjoying a bit of a renaissance.

Team USA is in Salem this weekend. The red white and blue squad is coming together after a three and a half week break, and this is their last stop before the World Cup competition in Canada.

Because these men go back and forth to their regular jobs, they relish the chance to compete at the sport they love.

Friday night against a group of Salem stars, Team USA won 9-2. Then they promptly dispatched a ranked team from Pennsylvania, Keating Fitness, 12-2.

Coach Peter Turner explained that men’s fast pitch used to get the attention, but now the women’s game has taken over, and the roles are reversed. Because his team doesn’t get as many opportunities, they relish the ones they get—even if they are little ones.

Saturday, June 27 11am – Salem Local All-Stars vs. Keatings Fitness
6pm – Team USA vs. Salem Local All-Stars
8pm – Team USA vs. Keatings Fitness Center
General Admission – $5 person per day
