Looks like the finals were played over the weekend, so we’ll keep an eye out for the update.

Softball says no to joint 2016 bid with baseball

By FREDERIC J. FROMMER, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Softball chose to go its own way for the Olympics, rejecting a proposal from baseball for a joint bid to get reinstated for the 2016 Summer Games.

The president of the International Softball Federation, Don Porter, made the announcement Friday.

“We have offered the IOC a doping-free, universal team sport that reflects the values of Olympism all over the world,” Porter said in a statement.

Porter met Thursday with Harvey Schiller, the president of the International Baseball Federation in Orlando, Fla. Schiller said he would move forward with baseball’s bid to get back to the Olympics.

The IOC voted to drop baseball and softball in 2005, and softball officials have said their sport was hurt by baseball’s doping scandals. Since softball was added to the Olympics in 1996, the U.S. won three straight golds before losing to Japan in Beijing.

The two sports are among seven competing for two openings for new sports at the 2016 Olympics. Baseball officials had argued that a combined bid would enhance the chances of both sports. The IOC will vote in October on which sports to add.

Porter said although softball’s bid is for a women’s sport, his group has offered the IOC an option of adding men’s softball. In a telephone interview, Porter said he thought combining with baseball would hurt that effort.

“We’re an independent sport, and we want to continue that way,” Porter said. “This is no disrespect in any way to baseball. Baseball’s a great sport.”

Editor’s Note: At the risk of hyperbole, this story might be the biggest news in the world of men’s fastpitch in the past couple decades. The proposal by Porter and the ISF has the potential to put men’s fastpitch onto the world stage, where many players and fans have said it belongs, and give it parity in worldwide competition. For many years, the argument against allowing men’s fastpitch softball the honor of Olympic competition along with women has been “well, the men have baseball”.

This decision by Mr. Porter and the ISF is clearly a move in a different direction, signaling an effort to give the sport of fastpitch softball it’s own identity, and one that stands on its own two feet, on a foundation of support for men’s and women’s fastpitch.

The ISF’s move — one we obviously support — has huge implications for the sport of men’s fastpitch. We urge our readers to voice their support of the decision, and decision to push for Olympic competition in men and women’s fastpitch softball.

I guess you could say that Porter and the ISF has provided a dramatic answer to the question posed here last weekend “Why aren’t mens sports groups lobbying for Men’s Softball at the Olympics?”

2009 AAU Int’l Tournament Program

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Courtesy of the folks at the AAU (www.aausports.org), I am pleased to post a full color PDF copy of the 32-page program sold at the 2009 AAU International tournament this year. This year was the tenth year that the AAU has held the tournament, which started in 2000 with just 8 teams, and has grown to 40 teams this year (with 15 more wanting to get in). The program includes this year’s schedule of games, all 40 rosters, and lots of color photos taken by Maddy over the past six years.

Thanks to Melanie Aguila of the AAU, who prepared the program, and to tournament Director Alex Linares for permission to post it her for you.

We note some updates to this Spanish language fastpitch news site, which we mentioned in October.

Beautifully done site.

I see the site is linked up to the coverage of the 2009 ISF World Championships. We heard from a number of Spanish speaking players at the AAU tournament in Orlando that they are looking forward to following the tournament, which includes a number of Spanish speaking countries, including Argentina, Venezuela, Puerto Rico and Mexico. During the Ballparkradio broadcasts of the 2008 ISF Junior Worlds, we received a number of emails from folks listening in Argentina and Mexico. One clever fellow in Argentina opened a chat room and was translating our play-by-play to his Spanish speaking friends that did not speak English.

www.softballnewsla.com will be a great place for Spanish speaking players and fans to follow the games in July.

Fastpitchwest has a page in Spanish to assist Spanish speaking players and fans to the game. Click here.

En espanol, for our Spanish speaking friends, translation courtesy of our friend Guido Silbert, who is attending school presently in Spain.

Estamos orgullosos de compartir un link a un nuevo sitio de fastpitch en español:

http://www.softballnewsla.com/blog/

YouTube Video of Rob O’Brien’s HR in AAU Title Game

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Update: Tuesday, January 27, 2009:

Here is a link to view the high quality video.

Update: Wednesday, January 28, 2009:

Several readers have pointed out that it seems that whenever I point the video camera, someone goes yard. (Holoien, Martinez, and now O’Brien), not to mention Budke’s triple. Coincidence, I imagine, but there is a line developing for hitters asking me to be at their next game with the video camera (with a corresponding list of pitchers telling me to “stay away”. ) If this keeps up, I’ll have to do them on a reservation basis 🙂

(Video by Jim Flanagan)

This video was shot during the 2009 AAU International Tournament title game between the Chicago/NY Dominicana team from the Dominican Republic, and the Midwest Stampede, of Iowa. Most valuable pitcher Rob O’Brien is at the plate, his team leading 3-0. He hit a three run homer, breaking the game open, and staking his team to a 6-0 lead. They would go on the win the game, 8-0, and capture the 2009 AAU International Tournament crown. The Dominican Republic won the very first AAU title, back in 2000 when there were just eight teams. This year’s field of teams grew to a record forty (40).

The video was shot with a HD “Flip video” camera, that is about the size of a small iPod. The quality of this video at YouTube is very average, but the quality of the original is remarkable. YouTube had added a “view high quality” setting, which I was using on my Fastpitchwest channel at YouTube, but that option does not appear to be available this evening. I am trying to adjust it for better quality, but in the meantime, if you wish to see the original, email me, at jim (at) fastpitchwest (dot) com, and I’ll email you a link that you can view it at.
