NPSA Fast Pitch Championships Begin Tonight

(click banner for original news story)

[BAHAMAS] – The semi final round of the playoffs in the New Providence Softball Association resulted in some very good play all around and now the best two men and women’s teams will play for the ultimate league title.

Tuesday night the last semi-final series came to an end when the New Breed beat the Kings Real Estate Pros 9-3 in game four of their best-of-five series.

The victory advanced the New Breed to the championship series against their most hated rivals, D’ Truckers who are the defending champions.

After struggling during the final two weeks of the regular season, the New Breed found themselves in a battle for the meaningless second spot in the men’s division with the Pros, but on Tuesday they seemed to have regained their focus and easily did away with the Pro. Now the New Breed looks poised to dethrone the Truckers, which is much easier said than done. .

In game four on Tuesday the New Breed saw the Pros jump out to the early 3-1 lead after the first inning, but New Breed pitcher Leonard LaFrance got stingy and allowed just four hits the remainder of the game.

His offense gave him all the support he needed. They pulled to within one run after two innings then exploded for three runs in each of the fourth and fifth inning before adding another run in the top of the sixth.

New Breed batter Garfield Bethel was 3-for-4 off losing pitcher Cardinal Gilbert. He hit the only home run of the game. Marcellus Hall was 2-for-3 in the win.

The Truckers swept the Defense Force Commodores in the second half of the men’s semi-finals.

In the past few seasons, particularly when the New Breed was developing their team to beat the Truckers, the two sides have had a number of physical altercations that have intensified their rivalry. They will play in the feature game tonight at 8:30pm.

The action will begin with game one of the women’s championship series between the Proper care Pool Lady Sharks and the fourth seeded Sigma Brackettes starting at 7pm at the Baillou Hills Sports Complex.

ISC Names Potolicchio As South American Player Rep

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

From Ken Hackmeister, Executive Director of the ISC:

At the recent ISC Board of Directors meeting in Kimberly, the body approved naming a South American Player Rep. This new position replaces the former At-Large Player Rep position held by Michael White. With Michael retired from the game, he is no longer eligible to be a Player Rep.

We thank Michael’s years of service as an ISC Player Rep where he served professionally and productively. It was Michael’s concept that led to the approval of the ISC’s PRAWN program.

Michael committed his continued service to the ISC if and when his input and talents are needed. He was very gracious about the change.

Juan Potolicchio, a 26 year old pitcher from Argentina has been named to the new position of South American Player Rep. With the increasing number of South American’s coming to the US and Canada to play ISC ball, it was felt they deserved a formal voice on the ISC Player Rep Committee.

Juan has been playing fastball since age 14. He is single and is currently studying Industrial Engineering and working in Industrial Resource Safety. He has been playing in North America for the past 5-years, most recently with Dolan & Murphy of Aurora, IL.

He is a highly intelligent person as evidenced by his Mensa membership. He reads, writes and speaks fluent English.

Please join us in welcoming Juan as a new ISC Player Rep.

NB select softball squad tuning up for 2009 North American Championships

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

From the Miramichi Leader:

SOFTBALL— Rejean Legere has a task ahead of him. He’s the head coach of the New Brunswick midget fast pitch softball team. He has 35-40 midget aged players registered and over the course of the next year it will be his task to bring that number down to 17 who will represent New Brunswick on a new international stage.

The squad is preparing for the North American Men’s Under-19 Fast Pitch Championships that will be held July 20, 2009 in Summerside, P.E.I. The tournament was created by Softball Canada in response to boys softball being cut from the Canada Games program.

“It was unfortunate that the boys program was cut,” said Legere. “However this tournament looks like it will be an even bigger venue to showcase elite midget level fast pitch softball.”

The event will feature a team from every Canadian province with the exception of Yukon and the Northwest Territories, as well as three or four U.S.-based teams and two or three teams from Mexico.

Playing within the Miramichi Tim Horton’s Men’s Fast Pitch League he hopes to give the players every opportunity to showcase why they deserve a spot on the final New Brunswick roster. The league consisting of older men’s teams has proven to be a tough challenge for the midget aged squad. The calibre of pitching they see on a regular basis from the likes of Jimmy Keenan, Trevor Ryan, and Brandon Gorman will give them a taste of what they can expect from top teams they will face.

As Softball New Brunswick looks to develop and bring back their programs to the glory of past years the players today are in need of competition and Legere said he is thankful he has a league at his disposal to get some innings in.

“Without the Miramichi Tim Horton’s League they’re be no one and no where for us to play,” Legere admitted. “The support from the league and the people of Miramichi has been very promising and we look forward to working with them over the the next few years as we develop this team.”

Part of that development will see the squad participate in the 2008 Midget Eastern Canadian Championships the Nelson Softball Association will host later this fall from Aug. 21-24. There are a number of local Miramichi boys looking for a spot on the squad and participating in this tournament. Follow the team and look for future articles highlighting their progress and details of of their development as this national event draws closer.

Argentinian Men’s National Team Takes on Midland Explorers

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

The Argentinian men’s national fastpitch softball team pays a visit to Mid-Michigan and the Midland Explorers
Posted by Greg Mancina | The Saginaw News July 19, 2008 21:42PM

MIDLAND — Julio Gamarci is a 34-year-old lawyer from Argentina who is spending his vacation without a cell phone, an IPod, a pager or a computer.

David A. Sommers | The Saginaw NewsArgentina National team pitcher Pablo Segui winds up during a game against the Midland Explorers.

“Even if the Pope is calling me, I’m out,” said Gamarci, a catcher for the Argentinian national men’s fastpitch softball team.

The South Americans have spent most of the month of July making a swing through the midwest and Ontario, Canada, playing 16 games in tournaments and against world-class teams.

Today, the blue-and-white clad Argentinians play their last game of the trip, a nine-inning contest against the Midland Explorers at 10 a.m. in Midland’s Currie Stadium.

On Friday, the national team beat a team in Munger 11-2 in front of more than 700 fans, who were as impressed with their visitors as the Argentinians were with their counterparts.

“They were real, real nice guests,” said Del Benson, who put together the game in Munger and also is a coach for the Explorers. “You talk about building relationships, they represented their country very well.”

“It was remarkable how they made us feel,” Gamarci said. “It was like family.”

David A. Sommers | The Saginaw NewsMidland Explorers pitcher Grand Patterson delivers during a game against the Argentina National team.

The reception was just as warm, but not quite as raucous, on Saturday, when Argentina and Midland split a pair of 6-1 decisions at Currie Stadium. However, fewer than 50 fans showed up to watch.

“They’re good, especially with their pitching,” said Explorers first baseman Kyle Beane, who worked with Gamarci to bring the South American team to Midland. “That’s probably a top six or seven team in the world.”

While the Explorers prepare for some upcoming national and world tournaments, Argentina was getting in some work during their country’s winter months. Gamarci said about a half dozen of their pitchers actually play on club teams in the United States.

The team will play later this year and then get serious about preparations for the International Softball Federation World Championships in 2009.

“The sport is small in Argentina but making these trips helps develop the program,” said Gamarci, one of a few South Americans fluent in English.

“The Explorers are always good, that’s why we come here. We know they’ll show up with a good level. … That’s the idea, it’s not always to win or lose, it’s the process.”

Gamarci said he and his teammates try to learn as much about the game as possible so the Argentina team can improve on its past performances. They were eighth in the last world championships three years ago, while fifth is their best showing, coming at the 1992 tournament in Manilla, Phillipines.

“Now, we’re trying to get ourselves on the podium,” Gamarci said.

Grant Patterson gave Argentina a little lesson in the first game, allowing one run on two hits with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. Dan Skillings had three hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.

Jose Guerrinieri then allowed one run on four hits with eight strikeouts for Argentina, while Gustavo Guerrinieri had two home runs and three RBIs.

Argentina leaves mid-Michigan today for Chicago, where they will catch a flight home on Friday.

“We got to see a lot of sights and play a lot of ball,” Gamarci said. “This has been great.”

Argentina men’s fastpitch team no small potatoes in Munger

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

Saturday, July 12, 2008
By Mike Spencer
mspencer@bc-times.com

The Argentina nationals will invade Munger on Friday night, one week ahead of the 54th annual Potato Festival.

”Yes, the town is abuzz about the Argentines coming, but nothing compares to the tater festival,” said Munger’s Del Benson, player/manager of the Munger Firemen who will host the Argentina men’s national softball team in an exhibition game.

The first pitch is set for 7 p.m. at the Munger field. Admission is free.

”We’re all pretty excited,” Benson said. ”I think the guys on this team realize this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for them.”

The 18-member Argentina national team will be in the midst of a Michigan and Southern Ontario exhibition tour when it stops in Munger. The team will also take on the Midland Explorers, managed by Auburn’s Clint Beane and assistant coach Benson, on July 19 and 20 in Midland.

”This is a great opportunity to meet people and make new friends,” said Julio Gamarci, catcher and team captain. ”After all, this is an amateur sport and the most important thing is to grow as persons and get to know different cultures, learn about them and improve in everything that you can.”

The series of games are a tune-up for Argentina which will compete in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan later this month in the International Softball Federation World Championships.

Editor’s note: The ISF World Championships are in 2009, not later this month.

”I don’t know how they’re doing and haven’t seen them play this summer, but I recognize some of the players who have played against the Explorers in the past,” Benson said. ”They’ll have some pretty good pitching and they’ll have good fielding.”

The Munger Fireman may not pose a big threat to the Argentina ballclub. But Benson’s young squad, which is 7-6 in the Thumb fastpitch league, is eager to face them.

”We’re sometimes pretty good and sometimes we struggle,” Benson said. ”We’re young. We’ve made some great strides the last couple of season and it’s been pretty rewarding.

”We’re going to play to win, but I’m looking at this as a real good opportunity for a younger players and the fastpitch fans in the area.”

Lapeer’s Kyle Beane, who pitches for the Firemen and plays infield for the Explorers, helped arrange the game in Munger because they were already scheduled to play the Explorers.

”I think it’s going to be one of the more unique experiences that Munger softball has had the opportunity to participate in,” Beane said. ”A lot of the guys on our team are fairly young in terms of their exposure to chances like this, and I’m excited that they get to play against an international team like Argentina.

”From what it sounds like, the entire community is excited about it. We’re hoping for a great crowd and a full ballpark. I have a feeling that it’s going to be a night that our team and fans won’t soon forget.”

In addition to Beane on the mound, the Firemen also have Munger’s Craig Histed (first baseman) and Brady Jacobs ready to pitch in.

”Kyle’s been monkeying around on the mound the last five or six years and he’s taken it fairly serious and he does a nice job,” Benson said. ”We started Brady out when he was 16 and he’s coming into his own after a couple of seasons.

”Craig’s got his feet wet on the mound, too, and he and Kyle usually pitch the league doubleheaders.”

Munger field is one of three used in the Thumb Fastpitch League. It is located on the festival grounds, just south of M-138 off Finn Road.

”For a good seat, you might want to come early,” said Benson, who plans to have a pre-game ceremony including introductions. ”We’re going to a public address announcer and some refreshments.

”We’re going to try and make it fun night.”

There will be seating behind home plate and some bleachers along the sidelines. Fans can also bring their own chairs.

Argentina, which is competing in Boys of Summer tournament in Denmark, Wis., will be armed with five pitchers for the tour.

They include Alberto Guerrinieri, Maximiliano Montero, Juan Potolicchio, Francisco Sabate and Pablo Sequi.

”Your summer is our winter, so this tour is our first games since last July,” said Gamarci. ”This is a great opportunity to stay on course.

”We are going to throw all our pitchers. We don’t have the complete staff, but the guys that are throwing will be competitive.”

Offensively, Gamarci, first baseman/catcher Bruno Motroni and outfielder Gustavo Guerrinieri are among the team’s top weapons.

The Midland Explorers will battle Argentina in doubleheaders July 19 (4:30 p.m.) and July 20 (10 a.m.) at Currie Stadium.

”I think it’s great,” said Clint Beane, preparing his club for some high-caliber competition. ”We’ve played some national teams in the past (Czechoslavakia and Denmark) but not Argentina.”

The Explorers, off to a 14-6 start, will use the exhibition games to get ready for the Amateur Softball Association and International Softball Congress championships. The ASA Major Nationals are July 31-Aug. 1 at Stevens Point, Wis. and the ISC World Tournament is Aug. 10-16 at Kimberly, Wis.

”We’re doing pretty good,” Clint Beane said. ”I like our chances of climbing up the ladder in the two big tournaments.”

The Explorers, ranked 10th in the World, also play doubleheaders today and tomorrow in Kitchener, Ontario, before traveling to Ashland, Ohio, on July 25-27.

The Explorers new additions – centerfielder Brad Ezekiel and leftfielder/pitcher Dan Skillings – have been a pleasant surprise for coach Beane. Ezekiel hails from Harbour Main, N.L. and Skillings is from Tavistock, Ontario.

Coach Beane also relies heavily on veterans Steve Horning (second base, Canton), Todd Schultz (shortstop, Williamston) and his son, Kyle Beane (first base). All have been with the Explorers for more than a decade.

”They are the old standbys,” coach Beane said.

Other area players on the Explorers are Todd Moore (outfielder, Clio) Steve Roberts (designated-hitter/catcher, Reese) and Ed Ketelhut (third baseman, Belleville).

The Explorers rely on Canadians on the mound, with veteran Grant Patterson, Toronto, Ontario, Brian Urquhart, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia and Mike Joseph, Ohsweken, Ontario.

Former Olympian Doug Gillis is no longer with the team.

”Life goes on,” coach Beane said. ”I think Doug got what he wanted … to pitch more.

”But Grant’s done a great job as our No. 1.”
