New Email Address for NAFA

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

Notice to NAFA Teams, Managers, etc.

Effective immediately, NAFA has a new general email address:
nafa2007 (at) nafafastpitch.com

The change was necessitated by the not so bright folks at AOL. They can’t distinguish between spam emails and ones that are sent to members of an organization. NAFA was sending out game times to managers for the NAFA Masters World Series, and AOL decided to shut down the email box, calling it “spam”. Nice, huh? Little wonder that there are legions who have a strong dislike for AOL.

Anyway, be sure to update your email address book.

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

I am taking a 50+ team to the NAFA Masters, Western Region World Series in two weeks, Sept 15-16, 2007 at Carson City, NV. I have a couple of roster spots open. If you’re interested, email me, jim (at) fastpitchwest.com (Remember that NAFA rules permit each team to have three non-pitchers who are 47, 48 or 49 years old)

Update: One slot filled.

Quick note to let the Western Region Masters teams know that the schedule is due up soon — watch here at the Morning Brief and at the NAFA website.

For those requesting directions to the field, here they are:
To print this blog post, click the title (to put it on a single page), then print.

Here is the Google Map as well, click links for larger map or driving directions. The directions above are from NAFA and may be more reliable, but the map will help you see where it is located in relation to the airport and hotels. Click the “view larger map” link at the bottom, and you can see the fields.

Some simplified directions from our friend JRW who is familiar with the complex:

Centennial Park is North and East of Carson City. The 4 fields are at the top of the hill on Heritage Way, not the fields next to the highway.

Coming from Reno – Take Arrowhead Drive East to the turn-off, then North on Centennial Park Drive to the Ball Park, CORRECTION ! It appears from the Google Map that the 395 By-Pass has now been constructed. Coming from Reno, use that By-Pass to reach Hiway 50 which is the eastbound road to the Ball-Park.

Here’s a map of the route from the Reno airport to the ballpark:

We are also providing directions from NAFA (below the jump) which are a bit more complicated — use either or both as you see fit. We have NOT been to Carson City and cannot vouch for either set.

2007 NAFA Masters EAST Start Times, Rockford, Illinois

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

Below are the official start times for the 2007 NAFA Masters East Men’s Fastpitch World Series in Rockford, Illinois at the Sportscore 1 Complex to be held September 8(Saturday)-9(Sun). They have been posted on our website at www.Nafafastpitch.com and on Al Doran’s site and on Jim Flanagan’s www.fastpitchwest.com. The Carson City start times will be posted on Thursday this week.

There will be no parking fee this weekend but there will be a spectator admission fee of $5 per day for all non-uniformed males and females. Each team will be allowed entry for all players in uniform, 2 coaches and one scorekeeper.

Coaches please confirm that you have received your start time by emailing us at Nafafastpitch@aol.com AND INCLUDE your cell phone number where we can get you at all times of the tournament and your motel where you are staying should we need to contact you for any reason. The Tourney emergency and rain info line should that necessary is 888-852-1115.

Remember each team is allowed three players 3 years too young that cannot pitch. All pitchers and other players must be turning the legal age in this calendar year. As of this time we have no geographic restrictions and no classification restrictions. You will be allowed to use only the players that are on your roster. The masters roster for 2007 can have 30 players on each roster so make sure you add enough players to your roster from other teams that are playing in this event in higher age brackets to cover yourself so that you don’t have to forfeit.

Many players are playing in multiple age divisions and on Saturday their are very few age division conflicts but on Sunday there will be due to the large size of this years event so you have to have enough players to play when your game is scheduled as don’t plan to hold any games up to wait for individual players who are playing in multiple divisions.

Print out the NAFA Official roster from our website and bring it with you to the tournament and hand it to the tournament director 60 minutes prior to your first game with Loren Lathrop at the registration tent.

There will be a homerun contest Friday night at 7pm and the coaches and umpire meeting will take place at that time also. If you want to check your players in on Friday night you may do so at the Complex.

If you have an emergency during the event call Benjie’s cell phone at 503-559-5398.

We will be checking in each team’s players at each complex 60 minutes prior to your first game to assure all players are legal age. Loren Lathrop will oversee the rosters and be the tournament director for fields 1-4 and Mike Watson will be the tournament director for fields 5-8 at Sportscore and check in those teams starting there. Any player coming late needs only to check in with Mike or Loren once they arrive.

The 2007 Masters World Series Tournament Rules are included in this email.

We will have our annual Masters team survey for your to complete before you leave the park on Saturday. Please let us know if you want to keep this event in Rockford and Carson City or what cities you would like to go to.

Other key elements of this event are listed below. Check the website every day for updates changes and additions to the NAFA World Series including the completed brackets once all teams have confirmed their start time. NO pets allowed and NO coolers allowed at the complex.

They sell alcohol at the complexes so no outside alcohol is allowed at the parks.

The following list is an OFFICIAL start time list with TENTATIVE opponents. The Sunday Single Elimination brackets will be posted online once all teams have confirmed their start times and the brackets have been sent to the webmaster. Check back daily. Your opponent may change but your game time will not be prior to what is posted below(without your approval) although it could be later.

Game balls will be provided.

We will have radar guns onsite to track pitching speeds for all divisions of play documented and available for you to see.

The Championship game will be Sunday at 3pm for 40,45 and at 4:45 for the 35-over and possibly at 4:45 for the 50-over if no one is flying out earlier than that.

Schedules After the jump.

Golden State Renaissance

Editor’s note: We’ve reposted this a third time, with the addition some additional high finishers in the ASA Nationals this weekend.

California teams are enjoying a resurgence of success at the national level in 2007 post season play:

1st: Rude Pac, NAFA A-Major Champions, Des Moines, SCIFL

2nd: So Cal Bombers, Palm Springs, runner-up at ISC World Tournament
2nd: Bakersfield Lumberkings, runner-up at ISC II Tournament of Champions

3rd: A-1/Taylor Farms, Castro Valley, CA, at ISC II Tournament of Champions
3rd: River City Rockers, Sacramento, CA at NAFA “AA” World Series;
River City Rockers, Sacramento, CA at the ASA “B” Nationals; and
Italian Athletic Club, Stockton, CA, at the ASA “A” Nationals
4th: Santa Rosa Fastpitch, at the ASA “C” Nationals

Judging from my email bag, the post season successes have renewed fan interest in California fastpitch as well. Waking up on the final day of the ISC World Tournament and ISC II Tournament of Champions, and seeing all three California teams (Bombers in ISC, Lumberkings & A-1/Taylor in ISCII) still in the hunt and then later in the day, a California team in each final was something to see.

This comment appeared in a story reflecting on the 2007 ISC and ISC II tournaments, by Dave Birnie, from Ontario Canada:

What’s up with California teams ? Although they didn’t win a title they had the SoCal Bombers in the ISC Final and the California Lumber Kings in the ISC II Final with another Cali team in the ISC II Semi Final, the A1 Taylor Farms. California well represented in 2007 !
