A lucky few will cap that off with a trip to Midland to see the ISC World tournament. Japan heads list of impressive NAFA 23-Under’s heading to Des Moines

“This summer (2005) we had very rewarding experiences in the northern part of the United States, the home of softball. Playing on that stage and enjoying it thoroughly was like the fulfillment of a dream…” – Yuma Arai, captain, School of Human Sciences, (Waseda University) fourth year

DES MOINES, IOWA- With 14 teams committed to date, the North American Fastpitch Association (NAFA) Age-23 Under Tournament is shaping up as an outstanding tournament for young men’s teams.

And the team at the top of the list should be a crowd attraction.

According to news reports coming from NAFA headquarters, Waseda University in Japan is sending a young men’s team to Des Moines to compete in the 23-Under World Series championship.

Now this has to be considered a big boost for the 23-Under division – and the NAFA World Series in general – and an incentive for other U.S. and international teams to possibly enter as well.

The 14 teams committed outpaces last year’s 10, a 29-percent increase. Men’s fastpitch dying? Not if these numbers keep going up.

Show this list to other young fastballers (and baseball players) and it’s sure to light a fire under their competitive spirit.

For more information about the Age 23-Under Division and other NAFA men’s fastpitch divisions, visit the NAFA website at: NAFA FASTPITCH

Las Vegas Road Trip III – April 9-11, 2010

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

(Click logo for official SCIFL website)

LAS VEGAS ROAD TRIP III

Happy Holidays, NAFA and SCIFL are announcing the third edition of the “Las Vegas Road Trip” men’s fast pitch tournament. The date of this tournament will be April 9th, 10th and 11th. Games will start on Friday afternoon at Sunset Park after 1:00 PM with the hope of having the games completed by 8:00PM Friday night and 9:00 PM on Saturday night. This is to allow the players and their families to enjoy Las Vegas. Championship games will be scheduled for 3:00 PM on Sunday.

Temperatures in Sin City the past two years have been very favorable, with temperatures being in the low 80’s. This will be a NAFA sanctioned event with the participating teams separated in the following divisions:

A
A-Major/AA (depending on amount of teams)
AA/AA-Major (depending on the amount of teams)

The splits in the higher classifications will be based on the amount of teams that enter. It is anticipated that 36 teams can be accommodated for this event and confirmation into the tournament will be based on the entry fee and roster being received. Last year there were about six teams that were not able to get in as the tournament filled up by mid-February. Please do not delay in getting back to me if your team will be entering into the event. Once the tournament is full, teams providing their entry fee will be placed on a waiting list and entered if any teams drop out or if additional fields are available.

The entry fee for the tournament is $400 and the NAFA 3-game guarantee bracket will be used for all divisions. It is open to all fast pitch teams and if your team has not yet paid their NAFA registration fee, there will be an additional $20 fee which will be forwarded to your State Director. With a minimum of eight (8) teams in a division, the winner will have their 2009 NAFA World Series entry fee paid for the division they played in. Also, to help keep tournament costs down, if your team books at least five (5) rooms and stays at our host hotel, Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, you will receive $25 back on your entry fee. Booking will need to be done using the 800 number and code provided in this message, rooms booked any other way cannot be confirmed through the hotel and are not used toward our count.

Team interested in playing should contact Robert Hernandez at rmh323 (at) roadrunner.com or 714-392-1387. All teams will need to submit a roster listing all their players with their entry fee. Checks can be made out to “SCIFL” and forwarded to Robert Hernandez, P.O. Box 1891, Anaheim, CA 92815-1891. Teams will be entered into the event in order of receipt of entry fees.

The host hotel for the tournament once again will be Arizona Charlie’s Boulder, providing rooms for the third year in a row. We have negotiated a very reasonable rate for the teams if you use the 800 number to book. The hotel is nice for the teams as the rooms are set up in a dorm type setting and being able to talk or hang out with each other is very easy. Arizona Charlie’s Boulder offers a casino, buffet and sit down dining along with live music in the downtown bar/lounge. Please help the tournament by booking with Arizona Charlie’s using their 800 number to receive the special rate. The number is 800-362-4040 and the reference code is C-SCIFL or mention So Cal Independent Fast Pitch League.

Arizona Charlie’s Boulder

www.arizonacharliesboulder.com
4575 Boulder Hwy, Las Vegas, NV
800-362-4040 ad reference “C-SCIFL” or So Cal Independent Fast Pitch League as the group name

Room rates:
Fri/Sat – $44 per night plus taxes for either a standard room or suite
Thur & Sun – $29 per night plus taxes for a standard room or suite
Please note that the suites will be available on a first come first served basis

These rates are by far the best that we received for similar type hotels during this time frame, most were well in the $100+ range per night. Rooms will be included in the block until March 9, 2010 so please do not delay in reserving your room. We will not be negotiating with another hotel, so once the hotel is booked or the cut off date has passed you will need to make your own accommodation’s. Last year there were a number of teams that waited until the last couple of weeks to book their rooms and the hotel did not have any more to give. At the time of booking you will be charged first night of your stay with the reminder of days being charged upon check-in. Roll-outs are available for an additional $10 per night.

Arizona Charlie’s Boulder is located 7 miles from the parks but the money saved on the rooms will be a plus for teams compared to some of the other quotes that have been received. Teams can also save at the buffet by joining the casino player program when they arrive to check in.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions regarding this tournament. I look forward to seeing you in Las Vegas.

NAFA Masters West Results

NAFA MASTER’S WEST WORLD SERIES
(Carson City, NV.) September 21, 2009
Perfect weather again for the West Masters and the Final Event of the Year will be the Las Vegas Battle of the East and West October 17-18. Any team that participated in the East or West Masters may attend. It is a 4-game guaranteed event starting at 9am Saturday with the final at 3pm on Sunday. Saturday night the East Champ will play the West Champ in each age group.

Special thanks to Carson City Staff Joel & Jeremiah and their concessions and field prep staff. Thanks to KC for doing a great job with the scorekeepers, Sylvia Isaac on stats, Bob Chapel for doing an excellent job as Tournament Director, Carley Parish as UIC and thanks to Pat Bucknell and Dewey Yoke for supervising the games down at Field 1, Kris Russom with souvenirs and Melissa and Mikel who handled the gates.

Final Order of Finish and All World Selections are below as we are having some issues with our website getting the info loaded.

Congratulations to the Champions of this year’s West event:
35 & over – CR Rockers, Portland in a slugfest over Taylor Farms/IAC
40 & over – Cal State Builders in a battle over Long Beach Black Sox, (Utah was upset by the Black Sox in semis)
45 & over – QMax from Calgary, Canada over Santa Barbara Fog
50 & over – Bay Area Merchants over Texas Stars/Si Senor-AZ (Texas Stars knocked off Ohio Battery in the Semis)

For the complete brackets and All-World Teams, please see the results on our web site at www.nafafastpitch.com .

The teams voted overwhelmingly to return to Carson City for the West Masters next year on the same weekend September 17-19 in 2010, two weekends after Labor Day. They also voted to keep the same four-game guarantee format with one round robin Friday night game at 5PM or later, two more round robin games on Saturday that seed all teams into a single elimination on Sunday. The championship games will be scheduled at 4:45PM or earlier and preferably at 3PM.

The teams in the 35 asked us to drop the age limit from 35 to 30 for next year and we will do that but will probably make everyone be 30 in the calendar year, no three year grace period, like we do with the 55 division. The teams wished to continue using the NAFA ball but nearly 50% want to change to a yellow ball for visibility, especially for night games which was consistent with the input we got from the East Teams. Almost half the people wanted to allow the courtesy runner be the last out like the present. They would also like a player not in the game to be able to be a designated runner once per inning. I will give other players and coaches the chance to fill out the survey for another week and post the rest of the survey results as soon as possible.

To the teams that have made NAFA the first choice in Masters play, we thank you for your support. 60 master’s teams from the U.S. and Canada are participating this year in the East and West and the growth is surely due to your participation and your willingness to give input to our NAFA Directors who guide your program and it is truly the “Players Program”.

Teams in the West pleaded for some rule to make the games stay on time which would be a time limit or an inning limit for next year. The awards, fields, field preps, ball, format, , supervision, the friendliness, openness & willingness to make things right, along with the camaraderie between the teams in the Masters program is unmatched anywhere. Overall the umpiring was very good and consistent (of course we all wanted that one call that went against us to be corrected).

From the 31 year old who is turning 32 this calendar year to the 71 year olds(there are 7 of them), the NAFA Masters program is supremely successful because of you the players. We wrote down pitching velocities for most pitchers and the new player photo ID check went well and was well received and appreciated by all coaches.
Every event is not without hiccups and we had a couple dealing with a few pitching plates and long games, but we made every attempt to make them right when they were brought to our attention.

Thanks to each and every player, coach and spectator for making this an event to remember.
