Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

NAFA and SCIFL present the “Las Vegas Road Trip” Men’s fast pitch tournament the weekend of April 5th and 6th. This will be a NAFA sanctioned event with the participating teams separated in the following divisions:

A
A-Major/AA (depending on amount of teams)
AA/AA-Major (depending on the amount of teams)

The splits in the higher classifications will be based on the amount of teams that enter. It is anticipated that 18 teams can be accommodated for this event and confirmation into the tournament will be based on the entry fee and roster being received. The entry fee for this tournament will be $375 and at the present time we will be using the NAFA 3-game guarantee bracket for all divisions. It is open to all NAFA registered teams. With a minimum of eight (8) teams in a division, the winner will have their 2008 NAFA World Series entry fee paid.

Tournament Directors for the event will be Robert Hernandez and Bob Chapel. UIC will be Clyde Bennett. Statistician will be Jan Tokorcheck. Game and player statistics will be posted on
www.scifastpitch.com . The tournament will be played at Hollywood and Shadow Rock Parks. Game times will be available once the tournament is filled or the Tuesday prior to the event.

Team interested in playing should contact Robert Hernandez at rmh323@roadrunner.com or 714-392-1387. All teams will need to submit a signed roster from their State Director with their entry fee. NAFA WoodBat Spring National

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

[Denver, Colorado] – NAFA would like to announce the addition of the NAFA WoodBat Spring National to be held in Las Cruces over the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. Due to the tremendous success that the WoodBat National has had the past two years, NAFA felt that a Spring National tournament was the next logical step. In addition, we feel that the Southwest US is a perfect environment for the tournament due to climate as well as teams.

This tournament will be a mirror image of the Fall National in Colorado. All pitchers need to be on the NAFA AAA or lower list. We are extremely excited about the opportunity to bring a national tournament to the Las Cruces/El Paso fastpitch community.

NAFA will be releasing more information on this tournament over the next several weeks via the internet as well as at nafafastpitch.com. You may also contact myself at wyofastpitch@wyoming.com or at 303-475-8142.

Thank You,

Dave Parker

Maddy’s Slideshow – 2007 NAFA Masters West at Carson City, Nevada

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

Below is Maddy’s slideshow of the 2007 NAFA Masters West tournament, for all four divisions, 35+, 40+, 45+ and 50+., at Carson City, Nevada.

The fellow in pic 2 is the ageless Mike Trotter, who wore uniform number 68 — his age — while pitching for Northwest Old Growth in the 50+ division. Mike threw well, again, and is an inspiration to all of us who dream of playing for many more years. Not long ago, the radar gun said big Mike was throwing faster than his age. May we all age so gracefully.

If it seems like there are a lot of pics of those “Deadwood guys”, you’re probably right. Pic 3 is Deadwood player-manager Steve Miner getting the third place trophy from Benjie with some other guy hanging around. We even slippped a photo of Maddy into the mix, can you spot it?

The western looking town in some of the photos is Virginia City, just down the road from Carson City, Nevada, which is just down the road from Reno. It was my first time to Carson City, but I thought it made a great venue. Easy to get to (Reno airport 20-30 minutes away), with major highways leading right into town. Plenty of restaurants and hotels right near the field, not to mention casinos for those inclined, and a picturesque setting at the ballpark, a mere 10 minutes from the hotels. Hard to beat. (Also the best beer stand of 2007, with microbrews and others $2-$3 for a giant cup.)

Remember that you can control the speed of the slideshow, by mousing over the pics. The speed control is at the upper right. Just move that little slider if you want to speed them up. If you want to “hide” the little thumbnails, just move your cursor off of the slideshow. Yes, the thumbnails are really small, due to the number of photos, more than 300.

If for any reason you get a “no photos found” message, just click refresh on your browser.

LB Deadwood Third at NAFA Masters West 50+

Monday, September 17th, 2007

The two Dans, Zupp and Regas Named to All World Series Team

The (editor’s) Long Beach Deadwood Masters 50+ team suffered its first loss Sunday afternoon at the hands of the eventual champions, Seattle Fasptitch, finishing third at the 2007 NAFA Masters West tournament, with a 2-1 record. The ‘Wood won both of its qualifying round games on Saturday and top seed for Sunday’s playoff round, but defensive miscues led to its demise on Sunday.

(Kneeling, left to right: Bernie Lopez, Paul Castillo, Jim Flanagan, Mike Encinas, Joe Crawford, and Dan Zupp; Standing, left to right, Steve Miner, Len McIver, Barry Woolery, Dan Regas, Dale Zeller, and Dean Bettencourt) Not shown: Joe Salcido

Pitcher Dan Zupp, and second baseman Dan Regas were named by NAFA to the All World Series teams for the 50+ divison. Zupp pitched in all three games for the ‘Wood, including a 1-0 complete game shutout to open the tournament, while Regas led the team’s offense, hitting in the third spot in the batting order, with a 4-for-5 performance in game 2, including a triple, double and two singles. Also turning in good performances for Deadwood were first baseman Dean Bettencourt (5-11), Bernie Lopez (4-10), including a bases clearing two-out double to break open game two against Nevada Power, and Mike Encinas (4 for 12, including a pair of doubles.)

Following its win over LB Deadwood in the semi-finals, Seattle Fastpitch went on to defeat the Texas Stars, 15-11 for the 50+ championship. Congratulations to Charlie Bendock and his Seattle crew.

The Texas Stars had a couple of wild ones Sunday, including an 18-16 semi-final win over the Bay Area Angels. Texas appeared to have the game put away early, with a run-rule in the offing, only to have the Bay Area Angels storm back to tie the game at 14. In Saturday’s qualifying round, Texas and Bay Area played to a 10-10 tie. Bay Area finished in a third place tie with LB Deadwood.
