Heading bat to basics helps ACT turn tables
BY PAUL NEWMAN

The ACT finally found form to score its first win of the Australian under-19 men’s fastpitch softball championships at Hawker yesterday.

The defending champion made a horror start to the tournament losing its first five matches on the tournament’s opening two days.

But a 45-minute batting drill before yesterday’s match against Queensland sparked the team into some much-needed form.

Queensland had thumped ACT 11-1 on day two, but yesterday the home side turned the tables to score a 7-3 victory.

”Finally we clicked,” coach Wayne Duroux said.

”Poor execution with the bat had let us down but after a 45-minute batting session we turned that around.”

Pitcher Matt Kraeh was just as effective with the bat. He hit a triple and a single, as well as keeping the Queensland runs to a minimum.

But in its second match yesterday the ACT found it tough going against Western Australia. It was behind 8-2, before scoring four runs in the sixth inning and eventually going down 8-6.

Relief pitcher Brendan Robinson helped slow the WA run flow as well as hitting two singles with the bat.

Despite sitting at the bottom of the table the ACT still hopes to contest the final on Saturday, but must beat Victoria and WA today to stay in contention.

Meanwhile, in the under-19 women’s tournament in Victoria, the ACT scored a 13-3 win over Tasmania yesterday before losing to NSW 5-0.

AT A GLANCEUnder-19 men: ACT 11 bt QUEENSLAND 1; WA 4 bt VICTORIA 3; WA 8 bt ACT 6; NSW 10 bt VICTORIA 0; NSW 11 bt QUEENSLAND 1.

Selects get second crack at Jr. Nationals

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

By BILL WALKER, SUN TIMES SPORTS EDITOR

[Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada] – The dust didn’t get much time to settle on the 2008 Canadian Junior Men’s Fastball Championship in Owen Sound when Softball Canada announced the event would return for a second consecutive year.

Owen Sound Volkswagen Selects president Bill Simpson said Friday that the 2009 Canadian Junior Men’s Fastball Championships will run from Aug. 2 to 9 at Duncan McLellan Park.

The Scenic City submitted the only bid for the event.

“I like to think (we were selected) because of the good job we did but in a roundabout way all of the details they send you to hold a tournament scared away the other bids,” Simpson said.

“Having seen everything you have to do and read, I know now why it scares people away.”

The 2008 organizing committee is just completing its final report for that tournament. Simpson plans to meet with tournament chair Maxine Parker about the 2009 tournament.

“We’re going to go through the good, the bad and the ugly of what we did (in 2008) and how we can do it better (in 2009),” said Simpson. “We don’t have an opportunity to change very much because Softball Canada basically says what’s what.”

The 2008 tournament failed to turn a profit after heavy rains wreaked havoc with the schedule late in the week. Simpson is hoping better weather next summer will help the tournament make a little money.

The Selects will once again serve as host for the tournament. The squad finished third in August when it simply ran out of steam on the final day.

The tournament was won by the Scarborough Wolverines, who defeated Elmira in the final.

While such players as ace pitcher Andrew Scott have moved up to the city’s senior team due to age, Simpson said the Selects should not have a problem finding replacements for the veterans because joining Owen Sound means an automatic trip to the Canadians.

Guido Silbert Pitches Young Bucks to National Title

Monday, August 18th, 2008

From David Blackburn:

Guido Silbert pitched the Young Bucks of Santa Barbara, CA to the under 23 North American Championships earlier today.

He got the win in the Championship Game for coach Clyde Bennett. I feel especially happy because I connected Guido with my old Santa Barbara coach Clyde Bennett, after we played in Argentina in Dec / Jan. Clyde put Guido up for the summer, and it paid off in a championship.

Editor’s note: Guido was the winning pitcher for Argentina’s 19u Junior Men’s historic win over New Zealand, the first time Argentina had ever beaten New Zealand. That game concluded on a game-ending triple play ! Giudo also pitched in his team’s win over Team USA Juniors in the same tournament, held in June 2008 in Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada.

Support Youth Fastpitch

Friday, July 25th, 2008

A note from Clyde Bennett, manager of the Santa Barbara Young Bucks:

Most of you know what I have been doing with the Young Bucks (23 and under). Many of you have complimented us on our accomplishments over the last four years.

We need help! We are going to represent the SCIFL in two divisions (23 and A major) at NAFA in Mankato Minn. The entry fee is over $800 plus the air fare, vans and rooms.

I can not do this alone and the kids have very little money. If you can help with any tax deductible contribution to Young Bucks Softball Club. Send it to me at 6600 Stagecoach Rd. Santa Barbara, Ca 93105.

Thanks

Clyde

NB select softball squad tuning up for 2009 North American Championships

SOFTBALL— Rejean Legere has a task ahead of him. He’s the head coach of the New Brunswick midget fast pitch softball team. He has 35-40 midget aged players registered and over the course of the next year it will be his task to bring that number down to 17 who will represent New Brunswick on a new international stage.

The squad is preparing for the North American Men’s Under-19 Fast Pitch Championships that will be held July 20, 2009 in Summerside, P.E.I. The tournament was created by Softball Canada in response to boys softball being cut from the Canada Games program.

“It was unfortunate that the boys program was cut,” said Legere. “However this tournament looks like it will be an even bigger venue to showcase elite midget level fast pitch softball.”

The event will feature a team from every Canadian province with the exception of Yukon and the Northwest Territories, as well as three or four U.S.-based teams and two or three teams from Mexico.

Playing within the Miramichi Tim Horton’s Men’s Fast Pitch League he hopes to give the players every opportunity to showcase why they deserve a spot on the final New Brunswick roster. The league consisting of older men’s teams has proven to be a tough challenge for the midget aged squad. The calibre of pitching they see on a regular basis from the likes of Jimmy Keenan, Trevor Ryan, and Brandon Gorman will give them a taste of what they can expect from top teams they will face.

As Softball New Brunswick looks to develop and bring back their programs to the glory of past years the players today are in need of competition and Legere said he is thankful he has a league at his disposal to get some innings in.

“Without the Miramichi Tim Horton’s League they’re be no one and no where for us to play,” Legere admitted. “The support from the league and the people of Miramichi has been very promising and we look forward to working with them over the the next few years as we develop this team.”

Part of that development will see the squad participate in the 2008 Midget Eastern Canadian Championships the Nelson Softball Association will host later this fall from Aug. 21-24. There are a number of local Miramichi boys looking for a spot on the squad and participating in this tournament. Follow the team and look for future articles highlighting their progress and details of of their development as this national event draws closer.

Reder gets chance to play with USA Jr. Men

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

July 4, 2008
By Paul Johnson Special to the Beacon News

It’s been quite a whirlwind for recent Marmion graduate Robert Reder in the world of fastpitch softball.

His grandfather, Bob, and father, Robin, are a part of the long-time tradition of the sport in Aurora. And after an appearance with Team USA at the International Softball Federation Junior Men’s World Fast Pitch Championship, Robert has joined that tradition as well.

Reder caught every other game for Team USA — which finished 5-6 at the tournament — which was held at Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada, from June 20-29.

Two years ago, Robert Reder was discovered subbing for his father’s team and suddenly found himself playing for the 19U national team.

“I was surprised I made the team,” Reder said. “Usually there is a national tournament that the kids play in, and I never went to one. I just filled in for a team and someone there knew (national team coach Tim Lyon) and told him about me. It was really cool.”

Twelve countries were represented at the tournament, which was won by Australia. For Reder, it was the first time that he had ever left the country and had the chance to interact with so many people from such diverse backgrounds, one of the highlights of the trip.

“I hung out with a lot of kids from New Zealand and Argentina,” Reder said. “Argentina had a couple of translators with them. It was kind of funny. The New Zealanders have that cool accent, and they were all big boys. It was fun off the field getting to know everyone. They’re just teenagers like us.”

Prior to heading up to the Yukon Territory, the team played some games in Utah to prepare for the world championships. From Salt Lake City, the team flew 2½ hours to Vancouver and had a layover before flying another 2½ hours to Whitehorse.

“The travel was kind of frustrating,” Reder said. “It took a whole day to get up there. The airport in Whitehorse is a lot smaller than Chicago. That was weird. And I didn’t expect it to be that much colder up there. It was about 60 the whole time.”

Reder will still play softball “here and there, whenever I can” the rest of the summer. He has not closed the door on his baseball career either. He is headed to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in the fall and will try to walk on to the baseball team.

But softball is suddenly on Reder’s radar for years to come.

“I still like baseball,” Reder said. “I don’t really have a preference. After college, hopefully I get to play baseball, but after that, I’m sure I’ll be coming back and playing for my dad’s team (Dolan & Murphy). It’s a family thing.”
