The Decatur Pride welcomes back an old friend to Borg-Warner Field

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

In the glory days of Decatur Pride Softball, there was no better voice for the Pride than the Decatur Herald and Review and sportswriters Bob Fallstrom and Mark Tupper. Not only did the Herald and Review provide great year round coverage, they were also the primary sponsor of the Shootout, which over time became one of the nation’s premier tournaments.

With the rebirth of the Pride in 2009, it was only logical that Decatur would once again look to host a quality tournament on the same weekend in which the Shootout was always so successful, Fathers Day Weekend. And when approached with the idea by members of the Decatur Pride Board, the Herald and Review enthusiastically supported the opportunity to again sponsor this event.

With that said, we are pleased to announce that this year’s June 18th-20th event will be known as the “Herald and Review Decatur Pride Shootout”. Teams entered this year include the Pride, Aurora Dolan & Murphy (IL), The Bar of Appleton (WI), Marshall Lightning (MI), Kelso Fast Pitch (MO), Belleville Stallions (IL), Pete’s Blues (IL), and Villa Grove Log Cabin (IL). Play will begin on Friday night at 7pm at Borg Warner Field with 2 games on the schedule. Play will resume at Noon on Saturday with games on 2 diamonds with the last game of the day starting at 8pm. Championship play will consist of all 8 teams advancing to a seeded single elimination bracket on Sunday.

The Decatur Pride would like to thank Herald and Review Publisher Todd Nelson, Executive Sports Editor Mark Tupper, Sports Editor Mike Albright, Bob Fallstrom, and Michelle Morthland for their willingness to rejoin the Pride in promoting this event and men’s fast pitch softball in the Decatur and Central Illinois area.

20th Annual Best of The West – Schedule and Team Profiles

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

[Santa Barbara, CA] – Ten strong ball clubs will converge on the central California coastal resort city of Santa Barbara for the 20th Annual “Best of The West” Men’s Fastpitch Softball Tournament.

The longest running Open Tournament held in California returns to the 3 field softball complex at Elings Park on June 5 – 6. Each team will play a 3 game modified Round Robin schedule on Saturday June 5, and all 10 teams will qualify for a single elimination playoff bracket on Sunday June 6.

Two berths in the 2010 ISC World Tournament will be handed out to the top two finishing ISC Western Region ball clubs, using only their 2010 ISC submitted rosters. Six of the ten teams have turned in official ISC Rosters, and those six teams will be battling for the two berths.

“This is probably the most talented gathering of teams that we have fielded in our 20 years of running this Tournament,” said Dave Blackburn, Best of The West Tournament Director. “We will be showcasing the skills of lots of former ISC All-World players, and some who are even probable future ISC Hall of Fame inductees.”

The field will be lead by the defending “Best of The West” Champions and ISC #5 ranked California Athletics of Salinas. The A’s feature flame throwing Canadian National Team pitcher Sean Whitten, a 2nd team ISC All-World selection in 2009. USA National Team pitcher Travis Price joins Whitten on the A’s staff. Hard hitting Canadian Catcher/DH/1B Darren Box is also a 3 time ISC All-World selection (01, 02, 03), as well as being named ISC World Tournament MVP (01). Five time ISC All-World selection Todd Budke, who lead the 2009 ISC World Tournament in batting average (.583), is also on the California A’s ISC roster, and is a deep threat against any pitcher.

The Italian Athletic Club (IAC) team out of Stockton, CA will also be very tough, coming off a first place finish in the recently completed Bakersfield Silverhawks Invitational Tournament. They feature young up and coming Canadian pitching star Tyson Barkman. Veteran hurler Matt Barnes backs up Barkman in the circle for IAC.

The ISC #10 ranked Bakersfield Silverhawks boast Argentina’s Sebastian Gervasutti as their top hurler, and young Canadian pitcher Andrew Putnam as his back-up. Former US National team pitcher Phil “Sonny” Perkins rounds out the pitching staff, and also carries a big stick, as the 2005 ISC World Tournament’s leader in batting average (.600).

ISC #30 ranked Maccabi USA has veteran pitching in two foreigners that have resided in the USA for many years. New Zealander Darren Rea, and Canadian Dewey Dyck team with Russ Snow to lead the Maccabi USA staff. Maccabi USA is captained by Steve Schucker, a 3-Time ISC All-World Centerfielder (99; 06; 07).

ISC #44 ranked Rude Pac of Sun Valley, CA was able to coax former ISC All-World infielder Joe Vigil out of retirement, adding some offensive punch, and veteran fastpitch leadership. Nova Scotian college student Cory Avery is spending the summer living in Southern California, and he teams with Gerald Pyle to deliver Rude Pac’s 1-2 pitching punch. Avery is an excellent young pitcher and hitter, and is part of the 40-man Canadian National Team Athlete development pool. The Utah connection for Rude Pac include hard hitting Catcher/1B Brandon Bingham, infielder Ronnie Branin, and outfielder Canyon Vance.

Dave Carlton’s California Builders ball club have experienced Canadian hurler Darren Strang, and young John Peterson of Lake Chrystal, Minnesota, as their leading pitchers. Veteran hurler Dave Jordan rounds out the Pitching staff. Peterson is considered among America’s most promising future pitching prospects.

Of the 4 teams not attempting to qualify, Mexicali Santa Cecelia and the Mexico National Team will bring great hitting, solid pitching, and a Latino flavor to this year’s Tournament. National Team hurler Panfilo Valdez will be on loan to his club team, which will allow him to pitch for Mexicali Santa Cecelia. Mexicali organizer and power hitter Arturo Solano leads the Santa Cecelia ball club both on and off the field.

Rounding out the field are the Caribbean Fastpitch, and Liberty Fastpitch ball clubs. Both clubs are mainstays in the NAFA affilated SCIFL Travel League. Pitcher Ron Rupp and catcher Fred Hanker will be on loan for the weekend to the Caribbeans, making them a stronger ball club. Gilbert Joiner also pitches for The Caribbeans.

Liberty Fastpitch has several up and coming fastpitch players, lead by Five Tool Player David Carillo, and hard hitting Joe Janicke. Ed Patterson and Darren McCall lead the Liberty pitching staff, which is completed by veteran hurler Doug Rooney.

Clyde Bennett is serving as the Umpire-in-Chief.

Legends Classic Announces 2010 Lineup

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

From Al’s Fastball:

Legends of Fastball Classic, Jume 25 – 27 – Schedule

The 7th annual Legends of Fastball Classic has set the field for what should be a tremendous weekend of high intensity softball, June 25 – 27, Peter Hallman Ball Yard , Kitchener , Ontario. Ten of North America’s top teams will compete in a two division, five team round – robin preliminary round with the top 3 teams in each division advancing to a single elimination playoff round. Games get underway with 4 games on Friday night and continue all day Saturday and Sunday with the final scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. A weekend pass is still the best bargain in the game at $20.

Legends will also introduce a 5 team junior division this year that will play on the 3rd diamond at Peter Hallman and will showcase some of the talented young stars emerging from the Ontario fastball stable.

The roster for the men’s side will be highlighted by 5 of the top 6 ranked teams in the ISC, as released this week. The host team Kitchener Rivershark Twins will kick off their 2010 campaign after successfully defending their ISC World Championship and winning their first Canadian National Championship in 2009. The Jarvis Travelers will bring a totally new squad to Peter Hallman and will be looking to show the world what kind of force to be reckoned with they will be this summer. The Kitchener – Jarvis rivalry has certainly been jacked up the past few weeks.

Making their first trip in to Legends will be the Gremlins from Clifton Park, New York and the Dominicans from Chicago/New York. Both of these squads bring power, pitching and speed and will be looking to send a message as to who to beat come August.

The Midland Explorers are no strangers to Legends but this year they are hosting the World Tournament and have rebuilt their roster to try to win the big one on home turf. Former R-Twins Frank Cox, Dan Loney and Craig Crawford will suit up in Midland blue and will certainly be looking to knock off their former teammates in Kitchener.

The Legends Classic is also very happy to add the reigning ISC 2 champion Pt.Elgin Blue Devils and the 2009 runner-up Kitchener Cubs to the field, the first time both ISC World Champs will compete locally.

The rest of the field brings some of the best young clubs in Ontario into the first major tournament of the season. The Owen Sound Selects are no strangers to big time fastball and they continue to rebuild their once dominant team through the young guns of the province. The Elmira Expos are the kids of the tournament but they are well disciplined and certainly bring a talented young squad to the fray. Finally, the Niagara Snappers make a return appearance to Legends and have bolstered their club this year to take a run at the games big price later this summer.

The Legends event previously ran the first week of June but organizers are hoping the move to late June will bring great weather, great crowds and great fastball back to the Ball Yard.

Watch Al’s Fastball for further details and the schedule later this month.

May 17, 2010 – Kitchener Rivershark Twins, the two-time defending ISC World Champions, open 2010 as the #1 ranked team, but only by the finest of margins as the new-look Jarvis Travelers split the vote for top spot in the pre-season poll.
